Do you like...Crash Test 23 May 2001, 08:02 Do you like driving at night and/or in the rain?? Just asking, because a lot of people I know don't... Ray Bell 23 May 2001, 08:20 This almost ranks as a dumb question to me... sorry, don't mean to offend, but isn't it true that greater skill are required in both? Though night driving is sometimes easier... except for dodging kangaroos. And radars. Put me down as one who prefers to drive at night. And in the rain... elephino 23 May 2001, 13:50 I like driving in the rain and and night. Though having driven back from Wakefield Park about half the way in the rain and at night, it was very tiring but I still enjoyed it. During the wet bits I was the fastest driver (I was at or under the speed limit the whole way) because it seems some people are afraid of the rain. But then most don't know what their cars can and can't do. Sharky 23 May 2001, 15:40 I love driving in the rain. Especially if it raining very hard. I also like driving at night a lot. The only problem with it is that over here there are quite a lot of idiots that love to drive with their headlights on "high". R 23 May 2001, 20:38 Yes on both accounts. Driving on the snow is no problem either (you're probably not familiar with this in Aussie), but what I don't like is to drive on sleet. The car sort of wants to go its own way, and you have to be very precautious... not to mention hope that everyone else is as well... KC 23 May 2001, 20:47 I don't mind either. The weather cannot be controlled as of yet, so why let it decide what you can and cannot do. smiffy43 23 May 2001, 23:30 i prefer to drive at night as you can drive faster safer, knowing that theres no car the other side of the hill, black shadows at the top of the hill, and i also prefer to drive in the wet as you can do burn outs and handbrakes without causing too much tyre wear. Ray Bell 24 May 2001, 00:04 Another one with the burnouts and handbrake turns... at least he's concerned with the tyre cost! Anyone tried the Bell's Line Of Road in the rain? There's a nice slippery one... Bluebottle 24 May 2001, 00:31 There's something strangely fun about driving an open car in rain, but I much prefere daylight when driving the Hurricane, or a bright moonlit night after a hot summer day, great way to cool down! The Dutton Sierra is a whole heap of no fun in rain- it leaks like a leaking thing and I still havn't got around to relocating the coil so that it dosn't get splashed. It's great fun on snow, I can chuck it around without too much worry. The Granada can be driven through almost any weather without worry at all. I'm not a great fan of night driving, I find my eye's get strained much quicker (Must change the Granada's headlamp bulbs before Le Mans...) Crash Test 24 May 2001, 06:58 I probably much prefer to drive at night than to the day. Especially on the roads I frequent, there are a lot of crests, and blind corners, and seeing the headlights of the other vehicles helps a lot. The only problem with headlights, is when they have those tragic bright blue ones that are aimed straight at other motorists eyes... As far as rain goes, I don't mind it, but it depends a bit on the car, and its tyres. I knwo that the little A-Class has these most extravagent looking Pirellis, and they do a fantastic job. It really must be full on flood conditions before the handling or braking are significantly impared. mtpanorama 24 May 2001, 09:34 Anyone tried the Bell's Line Of Road in the rain? There's a nice slippery one... Ray, I grew up in North Richmond and once i got my licence many a friday and saturday night were spent driving(racing really) up and down Bells line. A mate of mine lived Just near the mount vic turnoff. So we used to see how fast we could get from my house to his place. Lots of times it was wet and very slippery. I actually turned my car around in the wet on the first tight left hander going down Kurrajong heaights. Scarry but fun. Ray Bell 24 May 2001, 09:47 1965 Bathurst weekend I was headed that way in my old 403, and we broke an axle at Kurrajong Heights... Including hitching to Grose Vale wreckers, the repair took three hours, so it was getting late when we took off again... an old Vauxhall went by as we took off, and a while later, past Bilpin and in that tight downhill section (I'm sure you know the one) the Vauxhall was on its side... It had a Holden motor... it was wet... it was the Bell's Line of Road at its best. Wrex 24 May 2001, 14:35 WREX loves the rain :) but hates other drivers in it :( bella 24 May 2001, 15:26 i love the dark. it means you can see all the traffic coming round a corner, so you can decide whether to do an alonso (or insert favourite racing driver) round the corners or not. rain requires the driver to be awake. which i'm not always. but medium rain is good. snow cracks me up completely. i can't drive into snow that's falling in big snowflakes. i have to pull over because i'm laughing so much. however, when it's settled, it's loads of fun. i nearly broadsided a house the time before last, and last time i had my own private snowstorm - i was coming back from the pub at about half midnight, and the snow had settled to about 2 inches. by the time everyone woke up the next morning, it had mostly gone :) oh, and it's not a problem if you forget your sunglasses at night... Ray Bell 24 May 2001, 15:28 Of course, Wrex... Melbourne has enough wet days that you have to... And enough bad drivers that you can't help hating being among them. DAVID PATERSON 13 Jun 2001, 10:20 I quite like driving at night, but not too late or I'll get tired. Scientists have found that the best way to stop the ageing process is sleep, particularly when driving. I do not like driving in the rain, I have very limited quantities of both confidence and talent and wet weather driving taxes me more than I can manage. Joe Fan 13 Jul 2001, 01:07 I don't mind either one but I prefer driving during the day time and in dry conditions. Why? Well, statisically, a significantly larger percentage of traffic fatalaties occur at night. For this reason, whenever I travel on a vacation somewhere I haven't been before, I always pull into a motel whenever it gets dark. I figure that I can get early at dawn and resume travel in more ideal travelling conditions, unless it is heading East into the sun. tickfordchick 13 Jul 2001, 13:33 love driving in the rain, hate driving at night ... Bells Line is fun wet or dry :rotate: AMoffat 13 Jul 2001, 14:44 I've done my best work in the dark. Joke guys :) mtpanorama 13 Jul 2001, 15:26 Originally posted by AMoffat I've done my best work by myself in the dark. it a Joke guys (thats what most people who know me say) :) we dont need to know all the details Moff        Wrex 13 Jul 2001, 15:30 Show some respect Mount, he's won awards for it ;) Bononi 2 Aug 2001, 23:38 I hate both... simply because the streets and highways are not safe enough even when you have those conditions... :( Alan Jones 3 Aug 2001, 00:29 I don't mind night driving for the same reasons as mentioned above, and the rain doesn't bother me either.Only downside is you can't see as far ahead in the rain at night. What i really like is heading off on a long drive at around 4 am driving a few hours in the dark and then watching the sun slowly rise and the landscape revealed in the morning light.Beautiful time of day;) Ray Bell 3 Aug 2001, 03:12 Originally posted by Bononi I hate both... simply because the streets and highways are not safe enough even when you have those conditions... :( I really think you should reconsider that thought, Bononi... A road is as safe as you, the driver, make it! Alan Jones 3 Aug 2001, 08:23 Originally posted by AMoffat I've done my best work in the dark spanking my monkey Joke guys :) Couldn't resist Moff    AMoffat 3 Aug 2001, 14:13 But what a monkey - more like a gorilla Alan! Bononi 4 Aug 2001, 00:21 Originally posted by Ray Bell I really think you should reconsider that thought, Bononi... A road is as safe as you, the driver, make it! Not really Ray. In 20 years driving I have no crash or minor incidents... because I am veeeeryyyy careful. Believe me, you don't know the streets/highways here... ;) Ray Bell 6 Aug 2001, 03:04 I've done a lot of laps in a lot of places... I don't think there's too much I can't conclude about things after nearly forty years of high-mileage driving... The road, I repeat, is as safe as you make it. Bononi 6 Aug 2001, 03:32 I'm sure you didn't do it in Brazil... Ask Jack Stewart. ;) Ray Bell 6 Aug 2001, 08:28 No, nor in Bombay... but the essentials remain the same. Alan Jones 6 Aug 2001, 08:43 Never forget Ray....... You are never too old to learn:) that beingsaid.... It's hard to teach and old dog new tricks:laugh:   Ray Bell 6 Aug 2001, 10:08 No, you're right, never too old to learn... but too many today reckon they have learned it all once they have their licence... or maybe a little before that time. When it comes to poor driving conditions, confidence is an essential. You certainly have to know your limits, and the car's as well, but you have to have a degree of confidence so you don't bring yourself - and others - undone because of unfounded fears. Bononi 7 Aug 2001, 02:42 Yes, Ray, after all I can tell you are right... Sad, but Friday on the news, I saw and horrible crash... the poor woman died instantly, the bombers had problems to release her from the metal debris the car turned into... it was raining, and a hole in the tarmac made her lost control and crash the truck that was coming on the other way... (Yes... most of highways here are simple two ways). :( Ray Bell 7 Aug 2001, 03:04 There are all too many of these events taking place, all around the world, and in so many cases they are really quite avoidable. Learning to drive properly is something that it seems no government ever wants to encourage.... That's the saddest fact of all. Jersound 31 Aug 2001, 20:22 Originally posted by Wrex WREX loves the rain :) but hates other drivers in it :( And I know why you like it so much Wrex...Would it have anything to do with that four wheel drive Subaru of yours??;) Bononi 31 Aug 2001, 23:15 The one in the pool ? It's a home now for his stingray...  Jersound 1 Sep 2001, 03:42 Originally posted by Ray Bell There are all too many of these events taking place, all around the world, and in so many cases they are really quite avoidable. Learning to drive properly is something that it seems no government ever wants to encourage.... That's the saddest fact of all. Excuse be butting in to your conversation you guys..But what you said Ray is Soooooooo true...Here in Austin Texas people drive with Nascar mentality..They tailgate like crazy, and I mean tailgate heavely even in the wet...There is no way they can stop the vehicle in time, that close, at those speeds..So the result is rear enders up the ying yang, many times a day I see this..I shake my head in disbelief, but it makes no difference they will never learn, body repair shops love them! |
