James Toseland is shortlisted as one of the 10 possible contenders to win this award. A public vote by phone will decide the winner during the show on BBC One, which is being broadcast from 1900 GMT on Sunday 9 December from the NEC in Birmingham. The number will probably be given out at the beginning of the show so if you want our man James to win, call (or text, whatever they decide) and tell your mates about it and show the world that James is the man for this prestigous award. He's twice won the World Superbike championship against great opposition and deserves to be recognised for this feat, especially after a Brands Hatch double in front of his home crowd.

British personality? Personally my vote perhaps would go to Hamilton. I am not totally sure if Toseland even is among the ten best racing riders in the world.

World personality? I hope not, Toseland would be a joke here.

Sorry.

Isn't it a bit of a foregone conclusion - I think there will be a shiny little sliver BBC camera heading to switzerland

This is good for the sport though, at least he may get to have a bit of a chat with people, I remember when Fogarty won his thrid title the patronising Beeb just had a 2 minute chat to him and said "well if can win it next year again maybe you will be on the shortlist"

How many other people could pop 120000 into a venue! Mindless idiots!

Its a con and always has been, for Gods sake even Wayne Rooney and Paul Gaascoigne have won it, two of the most illiterate sportsmen the world has even produced!! Says it all

Oh and Princess Anna won it as well once, it is the BBC after all!

For a British sport personality of the year, I'd nominate in the shortlist Max Foxley, I mean Mosley, and Dennis. Even better as a pair. You cannot negate they were the main characters in motorsport this year.

Sorry but comparatively bike racing is so low key in terms of impact ;)

On a side note, Casey Stoner was this week named as a finalist for the Young Australian Of The Year award.

I'll be voting for Joe Calzaghe. He, Hatton and Khan have put boxing well and truly back on the sporting map in Britain.

IMHO Surely the title of the award is wrong. I don't think it's about being a "personalitiy" anymore. It should be re-named BBC Sports Acheivement of the Year because that's what people vote for not the personality.

Yes, that's right. The title "personality" would exclude horses, greyhounds and some racing drivers.

Sadly or not sadly, WSK is not the first tier in bike racing. Why winning it is going to propel you to the top British personality? Is British sports status so damaged?

Is Toseland better or worse than, say, Edwards? Is Edwards in the top ten riders class? I'm not sure at all and I think Toseland is not better than Edwards was.

Experience says that good or even great WSK riders usually have a hard time in MotoGP. Rossi, Stoner, Pedrosa, Hayden, Capirossi, Melandri, Hopkins,... Toseland has to show he is at least in the fight with them to aspire to win a British sport personality.

It's not about being a "good racer", is about being the *best* British sportsman, across all the sports.

Nothing against Toseland, just I think the title is a bit big for him currently.
