bestfit 15 Dec 2007, 04:14 I see Chris V finally gets to use #7.
He has always wanted #7 in honour of Barry Sheene who helped him greatly at the start of his career, but couldn't use it in WSBK because of Chilli and couldn't use it in MotoGP because of Checa.
I'm sure his livery will use the famous Sheene crossed 7. :)
Pro Racer 15 Dec 2007, 04:18 i'm sure it will and it is good to see him get to use it, Barry help Chris a great deal and Chris is repaying him, well done Chris , can't wait to see the #1 on the Duc though.
Gerben24 15 Dec 2007, 11:23 The number that raised my eyebrow was the number 4. I was told Dovizioso was allowed to race #34 cause nowadays it is motogp and not 500cc anymore. If that is true, than good on him to decide to drop the #34.
chunder 15 Dec 2007, 11:36 I think Andrea would propably respect Kevins achievements rather than go over him in this way.
Must be ehy he chose the number in the first place.
Where is Gabor by the way??
Gerben24 15 Dec 2007, 11:54 Gabor not there must be a mistake.
I only see one Aoyama in 250cc. Where is S. Aoyama? The second Repsol bike is not there. I assume he will eventually, meaning both Aoyama's on a KTM.
I also noticed a Yamaha back in 250cc. How old will that bike be...
5-6 years?
Terrible piece of kit, by todays standards.
gabor is defending his 125cc title but wearing # 14

Bit of triva: That number (34) was originally Bruce Hammers' then Wes Cooley had it, and Kevin kept up the tradition.

27 is better.
Nigel Mansell, Giles Villeneuve, Jack Villeneuve, Scott McDonald, Casey Stoner.
All bloody legends.
Infact, i'm not entirely sure that Doohan's first number wasn't 27. But don't hold me too that.
Gerben24 30 Dec 2007, 10:49 You forgot Ayrton Senna if we have to talk legends... (he raced with #27 in 1990).

Yes, Doohan's first number in 500's was 27 in 1989.
Didn't Alan Jones race with #27 when he won the F1 championship?
chunder 30 Dec 2007, 12:21 Oh God, the damn Aussies even manage to get something out of a stupid thing like this!!
bestfit 30 Dec 2007, 13:58 Not trying to get anything from anything. Just answering one question and asking another.
BootsOntheSide 3 Jan 2008, 15:10 [Off-topic]
Alan Jones effectively pioneeered the #27, by taking Williams from nowhere to the title with it. They swapped with Ferrari (who had #1 and #2 for 1980) and the rest is sentiment. Gilles' best results actually came with #11 in 1979, but history forgets that.
I'd maintain that the ledgend of Gillles were the two wins in that dog of a car in '81. Was that with 27?
Shots of him powersliding through Rasscasse stay with me till the day. :)
He did win those two with #27.....it's ironic though that Ferrari's most iconic number was made due to their uncompetitiveness though...
Any reason Stoner specifically chose the #27, with the Australian falg in it??
Have to say i preferred the years where the Top 10 riders generally took the number of their finishing position the previous season, but thats just me :)

#27 was given to Stoner by Alberto Puig back in the Spanish Cup 125cc days.
He gave -
Elias #24
Olive #25
Pedrosa #26
Stoner #27
I thought there were only three musketeers picked originally and they were all Spanish, Elias, Olive and Pedrobot.
the year (2001) he raced british 125cc he also did some spanish 125cc races - puig then gave him a wild card ride at phillip island on the movistar/telefonica honda...

Keeping the same number allows them to build a merchandise stream around it, otherwise a lot of merchandise would need to be changed each season.

I understand the 'building the brand' part.....
Then again of course, changing the merchandise each season means the diehards have to buy more stuff to keep 'current', which would please the makers you would think.....
But then again how many current riders sell merchandise around their racing number? (Apart from Rossi)
Gerben24 7 Jan 2008, 09:18 Everybody nowadays has their number on their cap, so really everybody sells sells merchandise around their race number.
As you say I would try to finish the season in a different position every year, to gain more from new merchandise every year...
In Rossi's case it is more superstition than trying to sell more merchandise I believe. He is so famous and popular that he could have given up building a brand around his number years ago.
To get back on topic, it has now emerged that Ducati most probably will help KR to the 2008 grid (with 2 bikes)!
Really?? 6 Ducati's on the grid? What could be better than that ? :rotate:
8 Ducatis on the grid...

bestfit 10 Jan 2008, 03:33 Q&A with Casey Stoner (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/64565)
Some interesting comments.
de Puniet and de Angelis are riders who have been changing their numbers pretty much from season to season. Then there's some riders who have had to change when moving to bigger class (happened to Dovizioso now).
Dani Filth 12 Jan 2008, 09:26 8 Ducatis on the grid...
:rotate:
no .. 2 Aprilias on the grid
I would prefer one MV Agusta instead.... :bleh:
bestfit 11 Feb 2008, 00:33 The final 2008 permanent entry list has been released.
Details Here (http://www.crash.net/motorsport/motogp/news/159480-0/final_motogp_entry_list,_no_team_kr.html)
It confirms that there will be no Team Roberts on the grid. :(
They have been unable to finalise sponsorship in time to make the grid. They may return later in the year or more likely in 2009. This more than likely spells the end of Kenny Jnr's MotoGP career. :(

*Alex De Angelis will now use #15 rather than #3 as previously stated.
** Dani Pedrosa will now use #2 rather than his usual #26. Apparently this represents the number of wins he had last season rather than his 2007 championship position. WTF????
Story Here (http://www.crash.net/motorsport/motogp/news/159437-0/pedrosa_becomes_number_two.html)
Pedrosa finished second in the 2007 world championship, with two race wins, and - according to a statement from the team - has made the number change as part of a tradition 'which dictates that a rider bears the number that reflects the victories obtained during the previous twelve months'.
FPV GTHO 11 Feb 2008, 04:47 Ive never really understood drivers/riders wanting to use #2. The first thing that comes to mind with the number is theres somebody better than them out there.
racer69 11 Feb 2008, 07:07 I like it, harks back to the days when most of the riders would take the number of where they finished the previous season.
