It would be interesting to here what your thoughts on the best sounding rallycross cars weve had the pleasure of veiwing over the years.
My particular favourite is Arnessons S1 at full chat, brutal. Also loved Alamakis S4, Welchy Mk2 (car colours), Rosnes Monza, the 911's in different guises were always a joy as well.
silver bullet 16 Feb 2008, 15:31 Tommy Kristofferson's, S2.
Paul Kumpen's, 3.8 6R4.
Steiner Joranli's, Calibra.
Also the two Renault 21's of Makarov & Yerofeyev. they had a sound all of their own :)
rx-guru 16 Feb 2008, 16:45 Those Porsche 911s with RSR engines of the late 1970s were sounding like circular saws. And Dutchman John Sieben’s RX De Tomaso Pantera with its normally aspirated 5800cc mill with a huge American Holley carb – that was really something…
Number One: The Holden Comodore used by Fransen, Coox... NA V8!
And the Vectra A 4x4Turbo from ?, very special noise.
And the 6r4...
:? Renault 21's of Makarov & Yerofeyev: I think it was one of these guys testing his car one the public road on a saterday evening/night at the ERC in Maasmechelen. Mid 90's?
bdwoody 16 Feb 2008, 18:26 jo van de ven had an awsome porsche with a real deep sound in valkenwaard and i guy whos name escapes me had a yellow mk2 escort with a chevy cosworth head at lydden sounded great .
would listen to the sweet sounds of george traceys metro all day long!!!
BertMk2 16 Feb 2008, 19:37 6R4
Any of 'em - a 6R4 at full chat up Hairy Hill is one of the greatest sounds known to mankind :)
BOY BLUNDER 16 Feb 2008, 20:19 Tommy's audi 92 european going up hairy hill on full chat " AWESOME ".
BB....
schanche 16 Feb 2008, 20:59 Only one car for me Barrie! Umm now i wonder what that could be er RS from some little known Fellow!
BertMk2 16 Feb 2008, 21:28 Thought of another one :) Turpins Nova.
silver bullet 16 Feb 2008, 21:31 Me too.
The sweetest sounding car around at the moment, Jamie Bird's Clio
BertMk2 16 Feb 2008, 21:39 Yep good one :)
Mine because it means it's still going  but seriously GT,s Metro sounds the business unless your sharing a garage with him and he's warming it up
burnsie 16 Feb 2008, 22:24 would listen to the sweet sounds of george traceys metro all day long!!!
Agreed, Tracey's 6R4 sounds fantastic. I'm doing the grid for tomorrow's rallycross, so I'll get an extra-close listen to it :)

Those RSR 911's really did sound great, lots of em as well, sadly never got to see the De Tomaso, Can also remember an awesome sounding Mustang at Snetterton with a similar sized engine.
Group B days (pre 1992):
Alamaki's 205T16 (a bit nervous, but sound of thunder!)
Schanche's RS200 (you can hear the high RPM this was massive tuned)
Gollops Bi-Turbo 6R4 (lesser noise than NA, almost road legal)
Post group B "spaceframe, no restrictor" days (since 1993):
Kristoffersson's S2 (Imsa sound, even better than Group B sound)
Joranli''s Vectra (like an electric motor, bit like Iversen vacuum cleaner RS200)
Schanche's Escort (massive RPM by judging the sound)
Current "WRC" days (since about 1997-2000)
Hansen's C4 (low dB tune and chirpin' and whistlin' al through the corner)
Larson's Fabia (about the same)
Isachsen's Focus (poppin' and bangin' this wil scare your granny!)
I like current sounds. They are far better than those noisy WRC machinery. In Rallycross you can notice there is more turbonoise, less exhaust noise. And you just feel there is more power under the hood!
rx-guru 17 Feb 2008, 09:51 Remember one ERC round at Fuglau (Austria) when I took pics of JL Pailler’s XXL Xantia. Stood just 3 or 4 metres from the spot where it accellerated away from a corner. Its noise blew my ears off my head. However, after all these rock concerts/festivals of my youth (including the famous 1970 Isle of Wight 600,000 hippies gathering) and all these attended pre-noiserules RX events I’m really surprised to still live without a tinnitus…
Thundersports 17 Feb 2008, 18:58 Arnesons S1, the 911's (liked the 3.2 flat six I bought one) and my favourite Lawrence Gibsons 6R4 wailing its way round Lydden, GTs is great too.
Peugeot 205 T16 of that French fellow Philippe Wambergue
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kEcNdQI3DPc
sound of a beast!
Only one car for me Barrie! Umm now i wonder what that could be er RS from some little known Fellow!
Alright Tony, guess you mean your old mate Martin, his RS's sounded like a hairdryer if you ask me.
Matti Alamaki 17 Feb 2008, 23:32 I will always fondly remember Alamakis Lancia Delta S4, remember the red one with North State sponsorship.
It sounded like the boot was full of beans, the unforgettable sound of the turbo wastegate dropping all in sunder. As a child, it almost brought tears to my eyes. Inspirational...:D
Alan Brown 18 Feb 2008, 10:29 6R4
Any of 'em - a 6R4 at full chat up Hairy Hill is one of the greatest sounds known to mankind :)
Definitely. But even better in the woods, when you can hear a 6R4 coming from afar.
BOY BLUNDER 18 Feb 2008, 15:08 As i will be on saturday on the sunseeker cant wait to hear those 6r4's coming through the stages.
BB...
sihorton 18 Feb 2008, 16:52 In the current field of cars, 2 stand out a mile.
Jamie birds clio, i could listen to that at full chat all day!
and second place, just, is Lawrance gibsons 6r4. Hearing that screaming round lydden is just awesome. Just hope we have him back out this year, was sorely missed from last season.
Going back to the group B days of rallying, the old quattro's had the best sound in my mine.
Si
dj choc ice 18 Feb 2008, 18:23 rallycross cars although rather quiet sound a million times better than the WRC cars which sound dull and limpwristed.
best sounding rallycross car.
audi quattro S1
peugeot 306 maxi RC, will gollops old car, that made a hell of a good noise
metro 6R4, glorious noise
subaru impreza WRC, at ty-croes a while ago, made a fabulous noise, slowing down it sounded better with all the backfiring than many race car.
Lawrence Gibson flat out rounf Chessingtons in his 6R4 is jsu about the best I,ve ever heard
Hmmmm.....most memorable sound has to the Easter meet at Lydden Hill in 1985 or was it 1986? when Dimi debuted his swb Quattro Sport....and the first time it chirpped and whistled it's way up Hairy Hill spitting flame at what seemed like an absurd rate of knots......mega
Others......well, has to be any BDA Escort, an 8-port Cooper S with straight cut gearbox, Tony Proctor's GAA powered Capri  , the mega Group A Cossie Sierra's, Matti's 205 T16E2, Arild Martinssen's IMSA M3 4x4 and of course Seppo's first 2wd bi-turbo 911 at Lydden in about 1982 ish, smoking the tyres for what seemed like all the way up Hairy Hill....
I'm afraid the modern stuff sounds lame......
Best noise I heard by far was at Internations in 87 at Croft when in warm up Sven Lestander and Olle Arnesson went nose to tale round croft - 2 quattros and double noise - awesome.
Close second has got to be the sweet sound of a 205 T16.
schanche 19 Feb 2008, 15:33 Alright Tony, guess you mean your old mate Martin, his RS's sounded like a hairdryer if you ask me.
Shame on you Barrie  Hair dryer indeed!
manimal27 21 Feb 2008, 00:07 Renny's RS200, no contest.
Of all the 6R4's - Rob Gibson's had a very distinctive howl. Watch the incar footage on Youtube with the volume up and you'll hear what I mean.
Wayne O'Connor's Rover SDi
The Chevy Monza used by the disabled chap in the Tork 909 team. The only car I've ever heard go along the Knife Edge at Brands which I could hear over the top of all the other Group B machinery!
Lahteenmaki's Delta S4 - the noise of that turbo'd and supercharged beast flying round Lydden was unique. The "choosh" noise under acceleration and the chirruping of the turbo on downshifting was awesome to hear.
Mind you - when you're stood 20 feet behind a grid of 8 cars they all sound pretty bloody awesome - as Boy Blunder will testify!

Pretty much go along with that. Didn't it have an auto box? (Oh, nice to hear from you Hog! - see you soon I trust?)
chunder 25 Feb 2008, 00:33 Eivind Rosnes, auto box and a hand throttle
Oh I forgot a car, I loved the M3's of Hunsbedt and Ekstrom, but Matti's 205 warming up on the rollers, or Welchs Astra popping fmake every gear change and burbling like mad such was the over fuellling and cam profile! lovely
PhergAthor 25 Feb 2008, 17:19 lots of music mentioned, but no one mentioned Per Eklunds Subaru bi-turbo
lots of music mentioned, but no one mentioned Per Eklunds Subaru bi-turbo
Ah yes that Impreza, sounded rough as guts, brute of a car, didn t that run at about 800 bhp?
chunder 26 Feb 2008, 00:12 I doubt it Barrie, Group A engines never seemed able to produce as much as power as the Group B based motors, mainly becasue I would imagine there is really no need for people like Citroen or Subaro to build them that powerful for WRC regs, theya re built with torque and guts in mind.
the B motors were built to be able to withstand high boost pressures etc so were much stronger internally.
But I reckon that the majoroty of rallyx motros are bespoke anyway arent they? So in those day you could buyld them unlimited!
Pretty much go along with that. Didn't it have an auto box? (Oh, nice to hear from you Hog! - see you soon I trust?)
Won't be out to play on the Monday I'm afraid as I have the little'uns that weekend. May be down in a spectating capacity. Will have to see how the rest of the year pans out.
Apologies to you, Boy Blunder and the team, but it's out of my hands.

We will miss you - but you know there's always a special place for you whenever you can make it.
from what i hear hog, BB has lined up a replacement already, one with twin crash structures up front!!
but Matti's 205 warming up on the rollers
Oh yeah I love the 4wd cars on rollers. You heared the gearbox, the engine, the gearchanges, see the flames and all those people grabbing the car to prevent it from driving off the rollers... Loved it!
but no one mentioned Per Eklunds Subaru bi-turbo
Yup! Special sound for sure! Too bad there was not so much info on it, despite braking all the engines...
the B motors were built to be able to withstand high boost pressures etc so were much stronger internally.
I keep wondering about that too, but otherwise all engines in Group A, Group B, Rallycross, Rally, etc are based around production engines and they all have like forged crank, conrods, pistons, etc. So there must be other things as well to keep things in one piece over a certain level (200 bhp per litre?). Maybe Nikasil liners? Block reinforcement? Extreme cooling?
I know for sure a very respected Norwegian tuner told me that the Audi 5 cilinders have a very good grade of blockcasting, better then the bespoke Cosworth engines. I also know that Julian Godfrey said in PF that with the use of Nikasil liner and special piston rings the major rebuild service intervals have been extended to up to a season. Also Hansen used a ZX Rallyraid engine for some reason. And Schanche took nummerous Ford and Opel engines to get it right... And Bardy did make the Joranli Opel fast and reliable! Why? :)
We will miss you - but you know there's always a special place for you whenever you can make it.
Thanks mate - hope to be out later in the year.
To be honest my enthusiasm has taken a knock since the last event I did. The startline crew took such an unfounded hammering on this forum from certain faceless keyboard heroes that it makes me wonder if it's all worth it. If I'd really wanted to I could have got childcare for my kids and come out to play on the Monday, but every time I marshal I either get sh*t from certain spectators for being a big guy in orange, or sh*t levelled at me on this site for technical problems that are beyond our control.
Search back through the forum back to last August Bank Holiday and you'll see what I mean..............
BOY BLUNDER 28 Feb 2008, 13:41    Hog it's a shame your not there mate, yes you will be missed, and yes your right,we will get a hammering again this year no doubt and i totally agree with what you have just said'sorry to hear that certin people have turned you away, hope to see you.
BB....
Kristoffersson's S2 without a doubt. It sounded like a jet.
I always liked how Schanche's cars sounded. Not necessarily pretty but very purposeful, like a caged animal.

See this pic of his 2006/2007 BMW Compact http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Eisrennen-Schweden-2007.jpg and note the so-called Långnabb tyres with 25mm spikes. Every true fakir would love to be run over by these wheels…
