Formula renault/Formula 3 wages

just out of interest, anyone know how much money a formula renault/formula 3 mechanic would be on a year?

It wouldn't be much less. Long hours, time away from home, skilled environment. I don't think people would like to be paid such a low salary for such a skilled job.

Formula renault is a lower ladder formula so the budgets are not as high as u think so you have to pay a engineer , mechanic , truck driver , tyres , fuel , hotels, fuel for transport , workshop . and many more things the budget has to stretch a long way so 20k is alot.

On this side of the pond the Formula renault engineer, mechanic, truck driver are all the same guy, The team Owner. While the race Drive is the owners son.

In a one car team £15-18k would be approaching a third of the teams budget!

50' Renegade Hualer - some of the FR teams have mechanics that work at the team owners other business too.

Not my team I run a GT car with a enclosed trailer on the pulled of my pick up.

For that amount of work, and that kind of money, I'd rather stack shelves in Tesco!

I can't see how that's 1/3 of a F3 teams budget (even in the National Class). If that's all they have got, then they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, running on fresh air!

A skilled engineer working in industry *should* be on £12-£15/hr (I'm not talking a 'technician' at a dealer), ie: circa £500/wk = £26K per year.

You would be surprised HOW many "single" men would do that, just to say they worked a year or three in motorsports.

On the other side of that coin good engineers will find a very good job, then on the time off, build a club racer for thier personal fun and racing fix.

1. For a challenging work environment
2. To be surrounded by talented and motivated people
3. To serve as an inspiration for others
4. Other goals in life other than materialistic ones
5. The travel

I could comment thus:

1 through 5 - Join the Army/Air Force/Navy

6. To be stabbed in the back by ambitious colleagues! It's dog eat dog!

I could go on!

IF you so choose to work in motorsport for your career, you need eyes in the back of your head, and ears like Jaimie Summers (!)

Small teams, however, often cannot meet the 1 through 5 criteria.

You can only treat people like s*** for so long before they leave!

And there's pay cuts and pay cuts! Going from 'regular wages' to 'you want fries with that' just isn't on.

I could understand doing it for £20K, maybe £18K if you're single, especially if there are bonuses/perks of the job.

Most of they guys I've met do their spannering for the enjoyment of it. They don't do it full time because they know that there isn't enough money in the job for a family guy.

I served my time, and got out on good behaviour. If you ever get to F1, watch your back, because no matter what you do, or how good you are at it, there's always some basket waiting to use you as a scapegoat for their own mistake. Luckily I managed to duck the bullets!
