Safety gear

inspired by Woody's "bruises" post I was wondering what sort of safety gear people use when karting.

I started off using none at all ..well except for my helmet..but soon found i was getting a sore neck due to a rugby accident years ago..so I purchased a neck brace that fits snuggly around my neck and seems to help in keeping my head upright due to my lack of strength in my neck..only problem i have encountered is that it impedes my vision slightly when having a look at where the guy behind me is..which is probably a good thing as you shouldnt look around to much.

but thats about it..i havent bothered with rib guards or anything just my helmet and my neck brace..but im sure that im going to pay for not using more safety gear in the future.

so what kind of gear do you wear ??

Like you I race with just the essentials of suit, boots, gloves which I bought from Revolution Race Gear as a package deal and a Shoei Helmet which cost more than the package combined!!

I also have a neck brace but I only used it once in practice and now it stays in the bag because of the inability to peek over the shoulder. I actualy found it impossible to turn my head at all.

When i start racing Speedway karts i will probably where the neck brace then.

I wear only the package from revolution race gear, plus of course ear plugs, and a cheap helmet. It meets the australain standard, but as we only race a J we are not going that fast. I used to go faster on the road on Suzuki 850.

My son chose an AGV mainly on fit, he must a a funny shaped head.

I had a lose at the fastest corner on our track, a downhill sweeper that you can take flat on warm tyres, with no problems. Generally karting seems pretty safe with lots of run off area and nice piles of woodchips to slow you down.

We have wonderd about a kneck brace though. I see some karters use them and Sprint car drivers use them a lot. ;)
