Hi can anbody confirm if I will be allowed to race.
I've just bought a xr2i that still has its sun roof in place - the glass is taped and a metal plate has been welded on the inside of the car.
The car has raced a few times in the past but my understanding is the glass should have been removed and a plate welded.
I've no problem replacing the glass in the longer term but haven't got chance to do it before the next race.
Any thoughts whether I'll be prevented from racing?
Thanks
Mark
The Blue Book has the exact wording but I think its something like "glass sunrooves to be removed and a metal plate welded in place". So, no - unless you find a short scrutineer... Or get a hammer??

Besides that its weight just where you dont want it i.e. high up, get it out and plate it over and the car will even go better! I had even more of a problem than that when we built the IROC as it was a T-Roof model like the Tomcats. What I did was take the glass roofs to a metal rollers and they rolled the metal to the exact shape & turned in the edges and they did a very good job we then simply welded them in.
Thanks, confirmed my thoughts that it should have been removed - also agree with the weight being just in the wrong place

Nothing about welding, just says must be permanently fitted in place so pop rivets are fine

I think you can fit a Lexan (serious perspex) sunroof in place of the original if you read the Blue book. It states IT SHOULD BE OF A NON SHATTERING SOLID MATERIAL OTHER THAN GLASS. I to have also seen cars over the years with a sheet of aluminium pop riveted in place that have always passed scrutineering. Like most things if its done well they wont give it a second look. And lets face it welding in a plate is aggro as you normally distort the panels that you then have to pug up and paint adding even more weight !

Whilst on the subject of weight,If your budget allows, would you not be better off replacing the whole roof panel? The reason being that even replacing the glass would still leave quite a bit of unwanted steel in place,if you can look under the headlining,if fitted, you'll see what I mean.
I find it hard to belive that the car has been raced before,it would be totaly against what the scrutineers have been taught.
Hi yes the car certainly raced at Combe - the sticker is still in the car
I know what you mean about the unwanted Steel - we will see what time we have got to change it

Why not pull the glass out in one piece, and make a GRP mould of it exactly the right shape. I've got GRP replacements for the glass panels in a Rover 220 coupe (pseudo Tomcat) and in 2007, it passed the scrutes at Brands, the german scrutes at the Nurburgring, and an international scrutineer who did a race log book for me so that I could race the car in Germany. Doesnt have to be metal, as long as youv'e got a decent cage and some protection. Hopefully lighter than a steel plate - as long as you don't do too fat a lay up !
