Barry Westmoreland

Tribute, by Duncan Rabagliati, to Barry Westmoreland who sadly died on Sunday:-

On Sunday at Cadwell Park, Formula Junior lost one of its dearest friends and supporters, when Barry Westmoreland suffered a heart attack as he breasted the Mountain in his Lotus 20/22. The Emergency services were in attendance at once, but very sadly, their attempts to save his life ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Barry joined Formula Junior only in 2003, but it seems so much longer that he’s been racing with us. He had an infectious northern humour, and we had many laughs together – and he was always so kind; even on Sunday morning, he was the man who was there helping me unload the Alexis in the mud when I arrived.

The excitement when Barry won his first Formula Junior race at Mallory Park in 2005, was there to see, followed by wins at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Croft, leading to a Class Trophy in the ‘Millers’ UK Formula Junior Championship that year. Another win followed at Croft in 2006, but he was really a quiet man and was racing for fun, and not trying to emulate young Edwin, but nonetheless was especially interested in the next young generation of FJ racers.

Barry was nearly 68, and had built up a successful plant hire business now run by his son Andrew. In his youth he had raced sidecars, so was no stranger to racing – or indeed to Cadwell Park where he won a treasured trophy back in 1963. He loved his historic road cars, the Ferrari Maranello and the 1929 4 ½ litre Bentley, and above all his fishing in Scotland. To Margaret, who joined Barry at all his races, to all their children, to Dave Rollinson, who had worked for Barry for decades looking after his cars, and to his many friends around Marr, near Doncaster, we have lost a really lovely man.

The funeral, which will be a celebration of Barry’s life, will be next Tuesday 22nd April at 12 noon, at Marr Parish Church. [DN5 7AU], and Barry will be buried in the Churchyard just across the wall from the Old Vicarage itself, the family home.

Extremely sad news as always but if you are going to go, breasting The Mountain in your racing car at Cadwell would certainly be a good choice.

RIP to a racer, and sympathies to his family and friends and of course to the officials who had to deal with this sad event.

As a tribute to a Great man Barry Westmoreland .
Do you all think that it would be a good idea to appoach Mr Palmer at MSVR to name the section of track from Mountain top to Hall Bends to " Barrys Straight" or Westmoreland Straight.

I have Known Barry a long time and he has always been kind and considerate to me and my father!
We have a garage only a few steets away from barrys business and he would always pop in and have a chat about how me and my dad were doing in our race cars and he would tell us a few stories of what he had been up to and and what he had planned!
He was atrue enthusiast when it came to his cars!
Im goingto miss his visits and knowladge , and his subaru estate full of his dogs and covered in mud!
my love and thoughts go to his family and friends who indeed will miss such a great and good man!

All of the Westmoreland family would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming kindness at this very difficult time, we have all been reading the wonderful messages and thankyou.
Barry first raced at Cadwell back in the 1960's when he was racing sidecars, he loved racing at Cadwell and it was no doubt his favourite track.
The family would be honoured to have a section of the track named after him.

Regard Westmoreland family

Margaret, thank you for posting here at such a sad time.

It occurs to me, that in due course, we should open a a file on Barry's racing exploits in our Drivers Files forum.
