Formula 5000s at Silverstone on June 2turn7 4 Jun 2001, 18:28 Did anyone see the FORCE Historic F5000 event and took some nice photos ? Ray Bell 5 Jun 2001, 01:24 Hope so, these were the best racing cars evert to watch... Can some pics be posted, please? Craig 5 Jun 2001, 07:00 Think you must be thinking of another formulae, Ray, these things were dire :( Noisy, yes, but slow and dull... Peter Mallett 5 Jun 2001, 08:38 I used to like watching them at places like Thuxton. The tendency to try and swap ends whilst going through Allard definitley got the driver's attention. Maybe the current drivers are being a bit cautious because these cars were as quick as F1 cars in their day.;) Ray Bell 5 Jun 2001, 09:47 With all their vices, I'd agree... Matich ultimately bettered Rindt's Lotus 49 times at Warwick Farm, definitely a handling circuit, and that time set by Rindt being with the high wings... At Phillip Island they were fantastic... Mind you, we never saw F1 cars, but some of our local F5000s were ahead of the stuff that raced world wide because we ran the class later than others. Peter Mallett 5 Jun 2001, 11:08 Essentially they were F1 chassis with stock blocks in the back. That put the weight bias firmly at the rear end. You can imagine the suspension movement on anything other than a flat circuit. I think the Lola 330(?) was the ugliest of the bunch with its high sides and those enormous radiator cowls each side. Ray Bell 5 Jun 2001, 15:20 That would be the T300, I think... saw a picture of a scratch-built model of one today, strangely enough... You might recognise the name of the kid who made the model.
