Andreas Zuber, how good is he?

One thing that's been puzzling me is Zuber's mix of pace and complete lack of results, and I was wondering if those who'd been following his career so far could shed more light on it than purely results show. He's clearly extremely fast, as his qualifying and testing pace in GP2 shows, but his results throughout his entire career have been poor to say the least.

Indeed, looking back at his professional single-seater career, you can go as far as to say he has only once beaten his team mate, and is often far, far off their final score.

So considering that, how come he is a) in GP2 and b) so apparently fast, at least over a single lap? I'm aware those two questions partly answer each other, but it does seem a mystery why his results so far have been so poor.

A quick teammate comparison:

2001 - F. Renault Germany - Zuber 81 vs Bruck 112
2002 - F. Renault Germany - Zuber 120 vs Bernt 31
2003 - F3 Euro Series - Zuber 2 vs Rosberg 45
2004 - F3 Euro Series - Zuber 0 vs Rosberg 70
2005 - World Series - Zuber 73 (16 races) vs Power 64 (13 races)
2006 - GP2 Series - Zuber 12 vs Bruni 31
2007 - GP2 Series - Zuber 30 vs Glock 88

All in all, those results are very puzzling. I know that he was unlucky last year with mechanical failures, but has he been that cursed throughout his career?

I think He has more money and sponsors than talent

And he wasn't that unlucky with reliability last year, he was quite capable of throwing it away by himself.

His F3 record is really pathetic: 24th in 2003 standings and the following season he was one of the few full-time drivers who didn't score any points, while Rosberg was a multiple race winner.

But because of his UAE passport he has nearly unlimited funding. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the F1 grid next season...

I think he's also a bit of a late developer - he's shown decent speed so far in GP2 but he's not topliner potential by any means. He's faced some pretty handy teammates over the laqst few years and not disgraced himself so he's alright. Current teammate Maldonado's a crazy man but although Pastor's not really got going yet, Monaco's coming up, where he seems to excel so if Zuber can beat him there that'll be good.

Overall he'll really need to win a race or two or be consistently near the front in order to move up to F1 though regrdless of money i would've thought?

He has qualified well, and shown a lot of pace, in GP2... however, he doesn't strike as a real racer. He seems to do stupid things (for example, the incident in Turkey last year when he crashed trying to overtake a car that had not made it's pit stop yet, handing the victory to team-mate Glock's closest title rival, Lucas di Grassi).
