ROTARY ENGINES

can anyone clarify what the position is with rotary engines in stage rallies?? thought i had read somewhere that rotary engines are 1.3 or 1.5 times the capacity for class purposes but cant find anything in the blue book. Bottom line is , is a mazda RX 8 in the upto 1400cc or 1401 to 2100cc class??

It would be in the bigger classes definately

I know a few guys i Ireland use rotary engines in Escorts and they run with the bigger engined cars

As there is someone in Germany building a Mazda RX-8 for the new European RX Cup category I’ve checked the FIA rules some time ago. The FIA says 1:1. 2 x 654cc = 1308cc = up to 1400cc. The RX-8 is eligible for D1 and the RX Cup since June 23 2008 without being homologated yet.

thanks for your help, if anyone knows the definitive answer with regards to RAC regs would still be appreciated but looks like 654x2 may be right after looking at all the teccy sites on RX8 s .

Yep, 654x2 = 1308cc is for sure the right engine capacity of the RX-8 but the big question mark is the equivalence factor/formula for the series you are going to contest. Can be 1.0 (= 1308cc) as with FIA, or 1.5 (= 1962cc), or even 2.0 (= 2616cc)…

Yep, it seems that 280 to 300bhp out of its 1300cc engine are realistic for the use in the RX Cup category (or Division 2 from 2009 on)…

BTW, the bloke is selling the pictured car at RXO coz he is building a new one.
