I wonder if anyone can help with this picture. We think it is Clermont Ferrand but what car and when?

Steve Wilkinson 9 Oct 2008, 18:29 It's Rouen 1962; the car is a Lotus 24 Climax that was entered by the Brabham Racing Organisation for Jack Brabham.
He qualified 4th but retired on Lap 11 of 54 with broken rear suspension.
ensign14 9 Oct 2008, 18:33 I think it's Pau in 1962. Jack Lewis only drove a BRM thrice, at Monaco, Pau and a non-champ race in England (Aintree?), and Ecurie Galloise only entered races in 1962 as far as I recall. But that would make 26 an Ian Burgess Cooper...let me check Sheldon's corrections when I get home...
ensign14 9 Oct 2008, 18:37 OK, Rouen would make more sense, it is a Brabham colour. I guess Jack didn't repaint his van when he sent the BRM back to the works.
Barry Boor 10 Oct 2008, 00:23 Yes, definitely Rouen!
I often wonder what prompted Jack to paint his Lotus that colour. No Brabham-owned or run car either before or after the Lotus 24 was ever that colour.
(What a shame the Lewis Cooper isn't visible!)

Probably taken on Ilford transparency film.
Another puzzle. A BRM but is it Clermont Ferrand or Rouen?

Barry Boor 12 Oct 2008, 21:38 This CANNOT be Clermont Ferrand. That type of BRM never ran there.
Plus, Ireland's #36 Lotus, identified earler, is also in the picture.
Good point, well made ;-)
Navyflier 12 Oct 2008, 21:50 I took both pictures in question and I can confirm that they are both at Rouen in 1962, Brabham's Lotus and Ginther's BRM. Interestingly, Brabaham is shown in the printed Programme as driving a Brabahm.

Jack Brabham was due to have his all new F1 car ready but "borrowed" the Lotus as a stop-gap. Which is why the programme had the car as a Brabham.

Barry Boor 13 Oct 2008, 00:05 Borrowed? Who from, Steve?
Doug Nye (Theme Lotus) asserts that he bought the car (947). He used it to fill the gap until BT.3 was ready. After all, he ran that Lotus for several months and even won the Danish Grand Prix with it.

I put the "borrowed" bit in quotes because I couldn't remember off the top of my head if he bought the car or just hired it! It was certainly a stop-gap prior to the BT3 being ready.

Tim the Grey 16 Oct 2008, 10:58 You HAVE to put these in a book. Some of this stuff is pure gold.
Thank you, once more, for sharing.

Sorry, no! Taken on Ferarnia Colour.
Navyflier 16 Oct 2008, 17:02 Should read "Ferrania". Sorry, never could spell!

Steve Wilkinson 17 Oct 2008, 10:17 Ah, Surtees and Bandini in the new Ferrari, leading the Keystone Cops!
Keystone Cops? I thought it was the Belgian National Team that required equal numbers of French & Flemish speakers hence the large number of drivers!
falcemob 17 Oct 2008, 14:57 Sorry, no! Taken on Ferarnia Colour.I could tell it wasn't Kodachrome anyway and Ilford always tended to have a greenish tinge to it.
BTW, did they do Kodachrome for medium format back then?
