Is it illegal to hold a raffle

Is it illegal to hold a raffle to raise funds for motorsport e.g rallying etc. can you hold a raffle without saying what the cause is for ,after all whose going to want to support a cause which is benefiting the raffle organiser for personal use of the money raised

I think it would be highly un-ethical to promote a raffle where the cause is unknown or fraudulently represented.

I'm sure if it's a public raffle then there are laws regarding who can promote and who the beneficiary can be.

If it's a private raffle at a private party then I don't see what can be done to stop you though.
