Testa Rossa 17 Mar 2000, 21:54 Hi
Is there anyone interested by the European Moutain Championship ? In the 30s and then the 50s and 60s hill climbing was the theatre of great battles through terrifying landscapes between factory teams from such respected racing marques as Auto-Union, Daimler-Benz, Ferrari, Porsche, Abarth or BMW, in the hands of Stuck, Caracciola, Barth, Scarfiotti, Herrmann, Mitter or Stommelen. I think it is a shame that nobody seems to remember it today. So if anyone as infos such as results or photos, particulary for the era from 1957 (new birth of the championship) to 1969 (last year for a Ferrari factory team), please let me know. I would also be please to know if some books or web sites exist on the subject.

Hi Testa Rossa.
Why look somewhere else, when all the info you need is right here on 10 Tenths.

Hi, Testa Rossa:
Maybe I can help you with some info. In the last three years of the era 1957-1969, the Montseny hillclimb was elligible for the EC, so I can give you some data.

Hans Etzrodt 29 May 2001, 18:14 International Mountain Championships for drivers, held for the first time in 1930, were introduced by the A.I.A.C.R. (Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus). The first European Mountain Championship consisted of 10 races. Hans Stuck on Austro-Daimler, the Bergkönig 'Mountain-King' of 1928 and 1929, became European Mountain Champion for racing cars. In 1931, the championship comprised eight races with Juan Zanelli on Nacional Pescara the winner. The following year the racing car devision was won by Rudolf Caracciola on Alfa Romeo. The championship had now come down to five races, with only the four best results counting. By 1933, interest in mountain racing had declined to such an extent, that only four races were nominated for the last European Mountain Championship, won by Carlo Felice Trossi on Alfa Romeo. Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Switzerland held their own national championships since the twenties but not on a regular basis. After WW II a Mountain Championship was started again by the FIA.
At the moment I am reading Porsche in Motorsport by Peter Morgan. In the book is also a little bit about Gerhard Mitter and the European Hillclimb Championship. What sort of races were this? Were they like the tarmac rallies of the current World Championship Rally?
Bob Riebe 2 Oct 2004, 20:53 Are there any hillclimbs in Europe that like Pikes Peak, are mainly dirt?
Bob
FIRE,
Basically a hillclimb is a competition to climb from the bottom to the top of a mountain pass or road up a moumtain (Pikes Peak, USA). Cars run one at a time against the clock.
The length of the climb can vary from about 800m for some British hillclimbs to the 20+ km of the Mont Ventoux climb in France and even the 60 km or so from Cuneo to the Col of the Madalena in Italy.
Rob Reibe,
Some of the Alpine passes used to be gravel, but I think they have been surfaced now. But I should think there are a few dirt or gravel hillclimbs left somewhere.
The term 'hill climb' is mainly a British one,and sometimes causes confusion.Usually involves a sprint up some Lords 800m drive! I once went to one on an airfield in Essex.
On thr continent the term is 'Mountain race'and means one at a time up a mountain pass,in the same way skiers race downhill.
