is the gp going back to adelaide - melbourne is a sh*t track which produces sh*t racing - or is that just f1 racing in general.....take the race to winton i say ;) ..... from a melbournian
OK, as far as we are aware, Melbourne has secured the rights to the Australian GP until 2005(I think) after which it would be free for any group to put in a bid to the FIA.
The circuits have to be apporoved by the FIA as F1 standard, and as much as Winton is a great circuit, in its present form it wouldn't get approval. Also the costs involved in updating the circuit would cost the Goverenments far more than it would cost to hold the event at Albert Park for 10 years!
I hold the personal opinion that the only reason the Albert Park was built (the 'oh gee, look at the scenery' circuit, if you will) was because of the Indy 300 circuit on the Gold Coast. But, the Indy 300 circuit has a much better layout overall.
I wouldn't mind seeing F1 go around that circuit to be honest, but I doubt that it would get approval for F1, either...

I sincerely doubt that this can be within a bull's roar of true... but it would only be a less than serious suggestion to take it to Winton, anyway (except from someone like AGGY, or Mick Ronke...).
Fact is that setting up the street circuits involves hundreds of wages for a couple of weeks, there is the cost of storage of the concrete blocks, and the trucking costs to haul them, all manner of small detail things that have to be assembled and then dismantled for the race.
For Winton, oh the thought cruels me... for Winton there would need to be a little wall building, some more gravel traps and maybe some road works. And, of course, the pit area... with buildings to go up etc... probably less than a year at Albert Park, however.
Phillip Island would be more appropriate, and the benefits could be reaped by generations of regular racegoers for years to come... and the Government would surely include a lot of access road upgrades if it were held there...
All valid points, but what you are forgetting is the construction of Grandstands, Hospitality areas, Disabled access, current Press areas increased, parking, First Aid points (of which some will have to be permanent), Toilets and as you mentioned, pit areas and garages, gravel traps, etc etc.
All in all, it is not a small undertaking and is not as simple as some people would think. Sepang cost the Malaysian Government approx. 75 million AUD, and whilst it is widely regarded as the best circuit for both fans and team crew, Albert Park is not that far behind, and any future developement for the purpose of hosting the Aus GP would have to live up to that name.
Adelaide was regarded highly for the circuit layout by drivers, but it wasn't that well regarded by the international media and the FIA. Albert Park has gained ground there, but by sacrificing the racing, which is, after all what the fans come to see.
One estimate that to build a ciruit from scratch and scrape through FIA aproval would cost a minimum of around 40 mill AUD. And redeveloping a circuit isn't that far behind.
But, it is refreshing to see that Australian fans are taking their F1 seriously, ie: other than us here and the handful of fans that we've met over the last months...
Cheers,
Phil
I`m happy with melbourne as it`s usually a dry race[you can gauge the true speed of the cars].
It sux for overtaking but has produced some memorable moments....as it`s the first race and teams are sorting themselves out,and often alot of crashes....i say keep it as the first race.
I wouldn`t be so keen on it as a mid season track.
Otherwise dig up Albert Park and put an Oval around the lake hey Ray.
Ray Bell 30 Aug 2001, 03:33 You mean something more like this?

Well that's what it was before they made the diversions to get in the extra corners... heaps fast, too!
I really don't like Albert Park.
As I have said before, I am more than happy to put my hand up to design Australia's new (permanent) formula one facility.
As I have spent countless hours doodling racetrack after racetrack. I feel I am certainly qualified.
Ray Bell 30 Aug 2001, 04:05 I think I qualify to be on the team too... I've seen plenty, both defunct and active, and I think I appreciate what a spectator needs...
Oh, that's right, that's not an issue with the F1 crowd, is it?
Anyway, mac, count me in...
Now that gives me a cool idea for our first major competition - design a circuit.....
Anyway, just a quick note to thank all those who have registered on the site of the last few days. The first email update is scheduled for next week, so hang in there.
To those who haven't, I would ask you to do so now, if of course you are interested. The reason is that we will be giving a few little bonuses to those that register early that those who wait won't get. We got some pretty big plans, a handful of outragous ones as well, but it will be worth it.

Ray Bell 31 Aug 2001, 02:21 Okay, Phil, let the games begin... do you want to supply a topo map section for us to work on, or do we just provide our own?
Give me a chance, I gotta sort out some sort of prize, maybe we'll make this a pre-launch registratee's only comp, so we can legitimatly offer a prize.... I'll put the suggestion to the rest of the team here and get back to you through the broadcasts...
But, it's a very cool idea, and it'll be a lot of fun judging them..

Another thing, what would people want as a prize, I got a few ideas, but I'd like a bit of extra input...
