Well, it has to be asked. Why are the Silverstone marshals overals black with orange epilettes and waistbands?
Someone told me years ago that when the Silverstone guys sent their new design to Jay Brand they were to be orange with black epilettes and waistbands, but upon collecting the order Jay Brand had inadvertantly reversed the colour scheme.
Come on all you Bob's out there. Let's have the real story at last!

By the way, this is NOT intended to turn into a Orange versus Black slanging match!!!

Not sure of the reasoning for the colours, but historically, and please correct me if i'm wrong, the Silverstone ES team wore all black overalls. So the addition of the orange could be a "let's be visual" thing, but keeping with an overall black scheme.

I'm not sure on that point Jason. If it's true then my theory has just gone up in smoke!
The BRDC overalls are a negative version of the Silverstone ones, with the epaulettes etc being black and the overalls themselves being orange.
The only Silverstone marshals I have ever worked with had their names and grade stamped on the tops of their sleeves is this normal or just them?

Just them, the rest of us can't afford it!

Having marshalled at Silverstone since I started I have never really found out why the overalls are black. I do know that that they normally cost me a small fortune and do not tend to fit very well even though they are supposed to be made to measure. I can believe the theory about the mixup at Jaybrand.
The embroidery has always been included in the price of the overalls and you can get almost anything embroidered onto the overalls ie usual duty or nickname bloodgroup etc
I have always found wearing black overalls at other circuits is normally a good talking point to get the conversation started.
Whatever the colour of the overalls the people inside are still doing the same duties as everyone else.
All circuits have their own way of doing things where we can learn to improve our own methods and this is why it is good for marshals to try and get around many of the other circuits.

I totally agree with you Darrell and will be the first one to say I have never encountered anything but friendship at all the circuits I have visited, admittedly not that many, but Silverstone, Lydden, Brands, Goodwood and not forgetting Kyalami in South Africa.
