Invincible 24 Feb 2002, 20:56 Below is the picture of an accident
I want to know who was involved, where was it, when did it happen, and what series is it?
Here are the points scoring system for crash#1
Who was involved (2 points) (as there are 2 drivers involved)
Where was it (2 points)
When did it happen (1 point)
What series is it (1 point)
So there are 6 points on offer for crash#1
BTW The picture below is actually a few second before the impact
And this quiz will NOT contain crashes in which driver, marshals or spectators were killed or badly injured
So here is the crash
SHerbert 24 Feb 2002, 22:44 The crash took place at the CART Indycar World Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on the 10th April 1994.
The driver up high approaching the crash is Jacques Villeneuve. He is about to hit, and split in half, the stationary car of Hiro Matsus-hita.
The other car behind Matsus-hita's is Paul Tracy's Penske.
The accident occured when Matsus-hita clipped the car of Teo Fabi, and Tracy was caught up in it as he tried to lap them.
Villeneuve failed to realise that the yellow had come out and he crashed into the side of Matsus-hita's car, just behind the driver cockpit. Dominic Dobson was also caught up in the accident.
Invincible 24 Feb 2002, 23:10 Here we go then, well done SHerbert 6 points
Here is crash #2
Who was involved? (3 points)
Where was it? (1 point)
What championship was it? (2 points)
When was it? (1 point)
So 6 points on offer
So here is crash #2
paulzinho 24 Feb 2002, 23:36 Looks like a Touring Car or NASCAR race.
Don't know the rest.
DTM 1994.
"John Winter" in the Opel Calibra V6 is in there somewhere - I think it's Avus, but I could be wrong there. Certainly one of the DTM street circuits.
Erm - just a thought - couldn't we have some "who/what/where/when" pictures which don't involve the destruction of automobiles?
Keith O'Dor, and possibly Frank Biela, Opel Calibra DTM, and 1994 its the German DTM championship.
I've forgotten the track.
Darren Galpin 25 Feb 2002, 09:27 Are you sure? That's a BMW M3 on the track in the distance, and I thought that the Opel Calibra DTM was only around when the Mercedes and Alfa Romeo's were racing, not the BMW.
Hints to the track: there is a bridge in the background. Keith Odor drove a Nissan Primera in the German Super Touring Championship, and was killed at Avus. I don't think it was Avus due to the bridge and the amount of grass. Biela? He only drove Audi's in the DTM, and it is not an Audi crashing. Mercedes perhaps.
All I've done is disproved things - sorry not to be more constructive!
Vitesse 25 Feb 2002, 13:25 From a vague memory (I used to watch DTM live on German satellite TV in those days) I think Tim's right about John Winter, but I think the car was actually a Ford (an Aussie Falcon maybe?). At the time he was running as a private entrant in the DTM.
No I remember it. Its definately John Winter, for sure Avus, DTM Opel Calibra and in the later half of 94

Georg Severich (WS Team) and Frank Schmickler (Team Linder) raced privateer BMW M3 E36's in the DTM in 1994 so it may be one of them in the background of the picture.
This one should be easy, but where and when?
Oo... I know... I know....
But I shan't ruin the fun 35 minutes into the game.
So I'll just say 1964.
And now I'll go off and hunt for my copy of the picture taken by the photographer on the right of the shot....!
Well either everyone knows or no one cares so here goes...
Tim of course was right about the year 1964.
If you looked at the helmet you knew it was Graham Hill.
At Snetterton traveling at about a 100mph he hit his brakes just as he hit a puddle, with this rather dramatic, but harmless result. He emerged smiling and un-hurt.
Well Tim, it is Identify the Crash..hehehe
Want one without a crash? Try this simple one.....
O gawd!
Er - pass. I'm going to have to think about this one for a bit.
A couple of nuggets about the Graham Hill picture that Strad posted. This was the Lombank International race at the start of the '64 season, and Graham was less than popular with the BRM team for twisting the only complete tub they had of the P261 car.
The car sent a bunch of photographers diving for cover as it reared up the bank, and one pressed the shutter as he fell backwards. The resulting exposure has the underside of the BRM, surrounded by gobbets of earth, silhouetted against the sky. I'm trying to find my copy of it at the moment!
Tim;
Excellent...hope you find it...:)
I look into these things for fun, (as I can never get the answers), but Tim's photographer story made me think of the Hitchcock film "Rear Window" where Jimmy Stewart plays an appartment trapped injured photographer with a broken leg. At one point early in the film, we see why he has a broken leg; he took a great shot of a crashing race car hurtling towards him-but apparently it hit him, broke his leg and left us with a bored fellow with a long focal lens and a neferious(sp?) neighbor and a truly classic film that can be viewed many many times with great enjoyment.
well, that's enough of that, I'll leave you lot to coming up with more answers!
cheers, djb
Okay...enough..this is a dead topic...
It is Ascari making a pass at the "Ring"..
What I found interesting was if you zoom in you can see he's wearing a huge smile.......
