Andrew Kitson 24 Jun 2002, 19:18 Moderators note from TimD:
Forum member Fred Scatley died on December 27, 2002. He was a remarkable photographer, and a respected and liked member of our forum community.
Several people have asked that a thread of his photographic work be set aside as a tribute to him, and so we have gathered as many examples as we could find among the posts on the forum.
If you know of any more, and would like to share them in this thread, please feel free to do so.

Roger Clark 18 Jul 2002, 00:51 I suggest that Fred Scatley's Graham Hill picture is from the 1969 Race of Champions and the Rindt picture is from the 1970 version of the same race.

That's the boy:laugh: Think the photo is the entry to Druids with Post 5 in the background. Cannot recognise any of the marshals (including myself).:bag:
Looking at programmes, I would say that's possibly March 6th 1966, for the BRSCC Edward Lewis Trophy. I think Anglia 171 is P de Banks, and Mini 186 is BT Cox. If I'm right, Brian Muir, Gerry Marshall, Ken Costello, Pat Mannion and John Rhodes will have been in that race somewhere.
Fred Scatley 20 Jul 2002, 23:31 Another rather wet race BOAC500 I think 1968-69
Fred Scatley 25 Jul 2002, 23:49 As Yimkin has been mentioned I thought I would post a picture of my Austin Seven that was modified by Yimkin in 1961 Polished head and valves Sprite cam and Distributer no damper in SU and lighter carb spring, The firm was called Gordon and Glynn, in Codagan Plce London. Fred Scatley 27 Aug 2002, 22:47 With ref to my post about Yimkin a month ago, I have just found the receipt for the work they did; it may not show up very well on screen but the firm was called Yimkin Engineering Ltd in association with Gordon & Glynn, technical Director Jackfairman. The prices charged, £20 for a polished head valves and stronger springs, then the labour £27 to strip the engine and gearbox and replace. wish it was like it now

Moderators note:
I think I've found all the photographs Fred contributed to this site. If you have others which you feel you would like us to see, please post them here, as our celebration of a man who has chronicled a golden age of motor racing.
Andrew Kitson 10 Jan 2003, 19:12 TimD -well done. A fitting tribute to a superb photographer.
Bravo TimD and dear Fred. Brings tears to my eyes. Thank you.
Well done, a fitting tribute.
Good job Tim, that was an extremely enjoyable scroll-through, and although I didn't know him, I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends.
What a fantastic range of beautiful shapes and forms, oversteer and blur. There were really some wonderful shots there, I especially loved the composition of this one.
Peter Mallett 11 Jan 2003, 08:29 Thanks for that Tim.
I hope some of Fred's family get along to see this. It clearly demonstrates Fred's enthusiasm for his subject and his immense skills.
John Reeves 11 Jan 2003, 18:34 TimD
Thank you for sharing once again Fred's wonderful pictures. I am sure along with many others on this forum when I say I truly looked forward to any memories that Fred captured and let us share. I will personally miss his regular visits. RIP Fred and God bless. Missed but not forgotten.
AllonFS 13 Jan 2003, 09:58 Thanks Fred (and thanks for the thread Tim). Wonderful pictures that will stay in my memory for a long time, which seems like the most fitting tribute for such a skilled photographer.
A really enjoyable tribute, thanks.
I think the full collection would keep someone occupied for weeks..
Stacy.
Andrew Kitson 13 Jan 2003, 14:28 Hi All
Further to discussions with our Historic Racing Forum moderator TimD over the weekend, I have this morning sent a 'With deepest sympathy' card to Fred's home - the address I found in the Autrosport directory, addressed to his family together with a letter saying who and what we are. I have also enclosed a link to this thread. As suggested by Peter above, I'm sure you will also agree that it would be nice for his family to see it.
Stephen Green 13 Jan 2003, 14:49 Brilliant idea. Thanks for all the posts, some bring back happy memories.
Excellent gesture Andrew and TimD.
Aysedasi 14 Jan 2003, 14:49 Simply a superb thread. Many many thanks for all of these wonderful photos.
Just logged on and what a shock to hear the news about Fred. Lovely tribute Andrew and TimD. Hope he is up there taking more stunning pictures, ready to show us when we all finally make it Home. RIP.
I wonderful tribute, guys. I'm very sorry that I never got to know Fred. They are lovely photos and capture an era I wish I had known more intimately.
I had skipped the second page of the thread the first time through, and I came across the image below. I remember it well from a paperback annual I had from 1971. It was a great photo and I showed one of my early F1 heroes, Reggazoni feading at Silverstone, note the fairings on the front wing endplates, used only for the British GP.
Who knew I'd ever see that photo again, Thanks, Fred.
Peter Mallett 18 Jan 2003, 12:01 Just had another scroll through and thought I'd put it back to the top.
Andrew Kitson 21 Jan 2003, 13:25 And rightly so!
David McKinney 25 Jan 2003, 20:49 Members might like to know that Fred passed his b&w archive on to Ted Walker at Ferret Fotographics some time ago. I think Ted is a forum member but is probably too commercially shy to tell us himself!
Ted Walker 27 Jan 2003, 14:51 David McInney is quite right, Freds archive has lived in Gloucestershire for a couple of years over 300,000 Images both B&W and Colour. Fred used some of the proceeds to buy his computor and scanner. They have joined the other 1.7 Million images my self and lots of other photographers have taken since 1936.
Hi Ted, good to hear you are preserving our motorsport heritage - more than could be said for poor Brooklands. And you don't look old enough to have been taken pics since 1936!!
Ted Walker 28 Jan 2003, 08:57 Hi Jenny,Its all due to the developing fluids, and the nice lady racing drivers.
Send me some quick - er, just the developing fluids! Wot a charmer!
Just before this lovely file drops off the board, I've asked one of the moderators whether it can be saved in an open sort of archive. I've not heard back so let's put it back at the top until they tell us what could be done. Surely, these shots and associated notes shouldn't disappear.
Hi John, you'll get a PM from me tonight...
...but rest assured, these threads don't ever get deleted - not now that we have thorougly ample server space. They're archived way back to the pre-history of the forum (well, early 2000 anyway).
To access the older threads, go to the blue task-bar on the Historic Forum menu (just above the "post new topic" icon, and click to see all threads from "the beginning". You'll be amazed what goodies are lurking in the older pages.
In the meantime, an excellent idea to bring this collection of Fred's pictures to the head of the page again. He really was something special.
JohnSSC 12 Feb 2003, 21:36 I don't often post in historic, but these pictures brought back memories of the "old days" as I waited anxiously for the new issue of "Road & Track" or some such - hoping for pictures like these. Sigh.
What a treasure trove Mr. Scatley has! Those truly were "the days!"
Sorry TimD sir. I don't have anything blue to press on the Historic Forum 'post new topic' icon. Again ... thank you ...
You need to look at the bottom of the historic forum index page, and choose "from the beginning", where the drop-down menu is:
Thank you Maisie - mine is in orange not blue!
Ahhhhhh, that'd do it! :)
