calcium 21 Aug 2002, 01:20 Because the "motorsport photography" thread has had a few pics posted I thought I'd start a thread for:
Your best picture/funny picture/bizarre picture etc.
Of course they have to be of cars/bikes/drivers/riders etc. Please post any info and captions.
Well, this is not my best one...but I like it. This pic is of Nelson Piquet at Watkins Glen in 1979. If I recall it right.....camera was an Olympus OM2, a 200f4 lens with a 2x converter. Film would have been either High Speed Ektachrome 200 (pushed to 400) or even Ektachrome 400....I'm old and I never kept a written record, 'sigh. Pic was taken as Nelson was going downhill into "the Boot".
Not sure if I remembered how to do this correctly..but here goes.
take care, all
Murph
Here is another one "from the past". Took this at Montreal in 1984. Pic is of some young hot shot who some believed had the makings of a pretty fair driver. Pic was taken with an Olympus OM2 with a cheap 400f.56 lens AND a cheap 2x converter. Reason for all this lens....shot through 2 fences. Pic was taken at what is now called the Senna esses. Film was (I believe) Ektachrome 400.
take care, all
Murph
I guess one would call this a "people shot". Took this at the 1986 Detroit GP. "Our Nige" is thinking seriously of wringing the neck of a Mr. A. Senna who has just won the GP. Race officials are attempting to get Senna on the poddium. I would guess that I used the OM2 with the 200f4lens with the 2x converter..film would have been either the 200 Ek. or the 400.
Murph
This is what is known as a n "at speed" shot. This was taken during the 1977 Canadian GP at Mosport Park. The subject is James Hunt (yes Peter, this one is for you !) who is flying down the Andretti Strait. The camera was an old Cannon with a 200mmf4 lens. Film was Ek. 200. Back in "the good old days" Fuji film was not used because of its major greenish tint. Today..I use Fuji Provia 100 & Provia 400...in the pits (when I'm able to sneak in) I try to use Fuji Velvia...but shoot that at ISO 40...not 50.
Murph
Though this isn't a great shot...it is one of my favorites because of the composition. Took this pic of St. Gilles in 1980 at Montreal. Pic was taken at the hairpin. OM2 with cheap 400f5.6 lens and a cheap 2x teleconverter. It was a bear to hand-hold....reason I started to lift heavy weights! Shot this through 2 fences at Montreal at ground level. Miss the "good old days"...when us common folk could have access to most of the track even if we were on the "wrong" side of the fence...now everything is "posted".... 'sigh
well that's it....for now

Ian Smith 5 Mar 2003, 01:53 Being a working pit-marshal I can only use my camera during dinner times and after racing finishes, but I am a Keen amatuer. the camera is a Kodak DC 3200 digital.
http://www.jlr.co.uk/2002images/LH4600.jpg
I took that one with bella's camera and Team JLR put it on their site.
woodyracing 8 Mar 2003, 17:45 I think this is my best track photo, although it does seem a little dark around the edges, could this be from my lens hood ?
it was a long distance shot using ISO 400 film.
Any comments ?
more likely it's your scanner? it's a good quality scanned pic that's for sure. you've got the technique :)
ok. i narrowed my favourites down to 5....
can't remember which track this is on because i've changed the file name. think it might be from castle combe.
this is brands at druids, slightly overexposed and i can't be arsed to change that.
the 13th picture i ever took with my camera and it's a pixel perfect panning shot. mark mcloughlin at paddock hill bend, june 03.
this had better be a team jva formula renault driven by charles hollings in the winter series 2002...
Hmmm, I've been thinking about this and I don't think it's possible to tie it down to a single photo.
Just the one F1 pic that I've chosen and I quite like this because it was taken panning looking through the fencing. So, not only did I have to get the car in the right position, I had to avoid getting the fencing in shot as well. I think panning shots are always a bit of a challenge.
Silverstone F1 testing (http://www.wkac.demon.co.uk/f1test2001/si_14601_02.jpg)
Now, one of my favourite places for photos has to be looking towards Lodge at Oulton Park, again, it can be quite a nice challenge because you don't see too much of the cars approaching before they're with you.
Yvan Muller at Lodge (http://www.motorsport-photo.accelerator.org/btcc2002/oulton3_4/ou21402_44.jpg)
I also quite like the photo I got of Muller after the little coming together with Plato at Silverstone, but haven't got round to finding the link for that photo yet.
Finally, a bit of two wheeled silliness at Knockhill:)
Phil Bennett at Knockhill (http://www.wkac.demon.co.uk/btcc2001/oulkn/kno_29701_16.jpg)
Forgot to add, all taken with Pentax MZ5N with Sigma 170-500mm lens. Film Kodak 400.

the edges of the photo and a some others are a little dark, the scanner just makes it look even worse. Im not sure whats causing it as some photos are fine. Its mostly a problem where the sky was getting darker.

thanks :)

I've had trouble working out which pictures to include, these are mainly from Combe last year, one of the few weekends I had off from marshalling:
The Morgan after it's return from Le Mans
Also can't post multiple images.
Martin Short gets a Champange shower
And one last one, a timed exposure at night in Grizedale on the Network Q Rally GB.
One of my favorites, taken with a manual everything Fujicia SLR
This is what I consider my best picture. This James Coco at the CMRA Superbike event at Hallet Motor Racing Circuit just outside of Tulsa, OK.
http://www.photo.net/photodb/image-display?photo_id=388586&size=md
This was shot using Fuji Provia 400F transparency film. It was shot with a Canon Rebel X and a Tamron 80-210mm lens. The settings would have been f5.6 (fast as that lens goes) and probably 1/250th second panning. I also used a UV filter.
here's a few of my Favorite shots First 1 is Ben and Joe Gatt's XB Ford Falcon BB/Gasser at Heathcote Park in Aus
2nd picture in keeping with the drag racing theme is Archie Robinson burning out in the "Warlord" Nitro Funny Car at Calder Park
number 3 is the late great Ayrton Senna in the Mclaren at the Australian GP in 1990
and last but in no means last its Nigel Mansell in the Ferrari at the 1990 Aus GP
Forgot to include the Camera info Fujica STX with a Tamron 60 - 300mm tele zoom which I've only just replaced with a EOS 30 not bad considering I got that camera (STX) in 1982

This is one of my favourite photos and I don't really know why :) maybe it's the reflection, I have had this printed at 20x30 and it hangs on the wall near my computer. It was taken with a D60 and Canon75-300 lens and was taken at Croft during the Jaguar owners club meeting last September.

The above photo is one of the best I have seen on this thread, nicely composed, sharp, there good contrast in the image. Well done!
redshoes 12 Mar 2003, 23:12 I'll second that. Difficult to pin down exactly why - the reflection, the composition, the sence of speed, the driver's body language, or maybe a comination of all of the above.
it's the reflection. that's so cool!
Crash Test 13 Mar 2003, 03:00 I really have a lot of trouble pinning it down to 1 or a few photos (I think I wound up taking about 2000 of the blighters last year). But a few that always stick in my mind:
First of all, probably not the best one, but I love the red and yellow on the blue. That first turn on the beach side of the Surfers Paradise CART track is probably one of my favourite places anywahere- with the Champ Cars often lifting wheels, and the V8s flying over the kerbs.
Crash Test 13 Mar 2003, 03:04 This one goes back to Bathurst 1998, and the Porsche Cup. You know when sometimes you've taken a shot of an accident or a car in the air or belching flame, that you've got it just right? I remember taking this one and thinking "Shoot, I hope that sucker turns out..". Bathurst is magical, I could spend all day every day there looking for new photo spots.
Crash Test 13 Mar 2003, 03:05 Oops
Crash Test 13 Mar 2003, 03:08 I always love the old historics. This one is Rod McMullin's V8 Ford Special at the Mt Cotton Hillclimb having a red hot go last year.
Crash Test 13 Mar 2003, 03:10 Bring back Lakeside! After growing up there, it was only in the last 12 months that it was open that I totally sussed the place out. For a 1.5mile long track, there were an awful lot of opportunities. One of the best was of course Hungry Corner, you could always get cars up on 2 wheels, doing things that they would never do at any other track...
Bodysnatcher 13 Mar 2003, 10:54 like somebody else said, when you're marshallling there's no chance to take pictures...but at le mans when you're not on shift..
A short cycle ride down to the inside of Mulsanne corner - a few words of franglais with the Chef de Poste and I got one of the best viewing spots on the circuit..
hope this attaching thingy works
Bodysnatcher 13 Mar 2003, 10:56 that was painless, lets have another - for the snappers like me mate baz, they're taken with an antique Pentax something using a 150 zoom lens
Bodysnatcher 13 Mar 2003, 10:59 and just to prove I was at the inside of Mulsanne and not some dreary bit of the woods (where I normally marshal)

corkholio 29 Mar 2003, 12:36 This was taken with my trusty $250 Olympus digital (which has since broken) during the final Indy Lights race at Fontana, CA in 2001, with Dan Wheldon following closely behind Townsend Bell and running away from the pack. I actually ended up on the same flight as Townsend from LAX to Toronto for the CART race and he told me Wheldon kept giving him lovetaps during that race!

corkholio 29 Mar 2003, 12:41 I wouldn't be posting this one either but for CART cancelling Road America for the forseeable future. I was lucky enough to be able to trek out to that beautiful track last year. Here is a pic of Patrick Carpentier going into Turn 6:

<edit> sorry about the low res picture. I didn;t realize how bad I made it.
out of all my le mans pictures i've always had a soft spot for this one. it was taken at about 3.50pm on the sunday on the run down to the esses. as you can guess by the time, there wasn't a soul around...everyone, fans and all the other photographers...had gathered on the main straight. i always feel pleased i got such a nice picture at such a late point in the race.
tanalised 22 Apr 2003, 10:17 This is my current favorite amongst the ones I've taken. Its taken a long time but I'm starting to get my panning right. This is Mark Skaife in a v8 Holden Commodore at Pukekohe NZ Nov '03 taken on a Pentax z1 with a sigma 400 mm
Ir was taken at 1/30th of a second at about f16 I think
calcium 22 Apr 2003, 11:50 tantalised, that's a very good pic.Blurred background to give sense of speed (also not distracting)The car is very nearly sharp (but can't quite read driver name or writing at bottom of car)and the position is spot on too (slightly more track to front)
This is just my humble opinion and the sort of pic I like. I'm no expert so feel free to disagree.;)
calcium 22 Apr 2003, 12:12 This is my best pic so far ( sorry it's not 4 wheels) Criticism: I've chopped the wheels off.
calcium 22 Apr 2003, 12:19 Oh yes, another point tanalised ( sorry for getting your name wrong:o ) I love the wheels, they're not motionless, brilliant.

This particular shot of the Top Alcohol Hydros at Waco last month has become one my best. They are approaching 200 mph at this point. Its not too hard to pan a moving object, but try to pan and follow an object accelerating from 0 to 217 mph in 5.5 seconds!
Damn, can't get the links to work.

Here's a link to a picture I took last year at the D.C. ALMS race. Damn two fences. I might do some photoshopping to it to add some neat effects. Maybe black and white everything except the flags?

touringlegend 26 May 2003, 20:02 It's quite a difficult choice for me as I've got two pics that I really quite like. Both were taken at Knockhill's F3?GT day in 2002.
First Pic (http://images3.fotki.com/v24/photos/6/62762/256506/02_05_12_ferrari3-vi.jpg)
Second Pic (http://images3.fotki.com/v25/photos/6/62762/256506/02_05_12_saleen1-vi.jpg)
Close call but I quite like the second one maybe just a tad more because there's more of the car in that one.

IMHO, you should have tried a slower shutter speed and panned the shot, although that would'nt work so well on the picture taken at the corner. Also maybe crop the pictures as here,
http://www.tkracing.co.uk/p0012a.jpg
or
http://www.tkracing.co.uk/p0012b.jpg
as the background distracts the eye from the car. This posses another problem as they look like they have been taken from quite a distance away so you would end up with very small pictures.
Just my opinion though

Excellent Crash...wouldn't want get too close to those though...
I just found this one from my local Ferrari Festival in Ottawa's Little Italy that I thought had a really nice composition. It wasn't actually moving that fast, but I used a pretty slow shutter speed to give it that effect. 1/15 or 1/30..I forget.
Any hints for future improvements would be apreciated.
Thanks

Welcome ChevronB16 :rotate:
Talking of Donington that weekend,
While all the pro photographers were busy taking pictures of cars at the track (I took a few too but not many worth noting), I spent some time in the Labatt Beer tent at the recent Canadian GP in Montreal. There I made the acquaintance of some "très belles Québecoises" and took some pictures. I sent them into f1-live.com and they published them here (my pics are in the 3rd and 4th rows on this page):

OK, so if you prefer car pictures to girls, here is one shot that came out pretty good. I shot this pic of the post-race Jordan garage at the 2003 Montreal GP, when fans are allowed to go down on the track. Obviously however, they are not allowed inside the paddocks area unless you are a real VIP.
I was standing behind a fence for this shot, poking my 70-300 mm lens through a hole at maximum zoom. Because it was very sunny outside and relatively dark inside the garages, I chose center-weighted metering on my Nikon
F-80. I only had a few seconds to compose the shot because there were lots of people getting in the way. I used the automatic program exposure mode, and I did not note the shutter speed and aperture.
rdjones 13 Jul 2003, 21:31 This is one from today at Croft - the Protons on there warming up lap and this is the best photo I have taken all year IMO
It has been a long time but this is my best image:

Steve.
I've taken quite a few pics that I'm very pleased with - this is one.
calcium 14 Jul 2003, 22:34 Hey Maisie that's a really good photo, well done.
My best picture is at home in Australia, but here is one from last years Lemans 24hr. Taken on a Canon EOS 30 at 150mm

Cheers, Calcium :)
Nice pic, Skippy :D
Wow, Skippy..
I dunno what's more beautiful - the photo or the car... swoon!!
Hi this is my first post on here, these are some pics I took at the Dukeries Rally:

Great shots Paul, particularly the Mk1 Escort. I wonder if you'd used a polarising filter if you might even have got the drivers face - but that would be prety tricky.
Great shots Paul, fancy bumping into you here, really wish I had gone to the Dukeries. Are you going to the Colin McRae stages tomorrow?
Cheers

Peter Mallett 18 Jul 2003, 16:54 Apro pro nothing at all. There's a great photo of two Morgan three wheelers posted by Kelvin in this http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=39965 thread.
LittleX 18 Jul 2003, 18:46 Welcome Bentos.Great Pics.
Rally pictures always seem to convey a greater sense of excitment than circuit pics. Must be the dust trails.
Hello all,
My first post too [only just discovered this forum ;)].
I don't have a very long memory for shots because I shoot so many but here's one I took up at Croft last week which I quite liked.

More stuff at the link at the bottom of the page if you're interested.

touringlegend 18 Jul 2003, 21:24 You're a bit handy with a camera by the looks of it Jason..;)
That's up at the chican after Hawthorns I think, I've got a great picture of one of the MG's in 2002 there on my wall. :)
hehe. :)
Right about the location, a bit of a severe crop due to a marshall on the inside of the track [if only they wore camouflage jackets!].
A great spot to shoot from but tricky because you're unsighted by the tyres for this angle. Much easier to shoot side-on but I don't like the shot as much.
J
Cheers Stefan - polarising filter is on my shopping list when I can afford it!!
Hi Ian, sadly won't be at the Mcrae stages, I was planning to go up for that and the British Offroad event at Kinross, but unfortunately, I'm a bit skint at the moment, and all events are on hold until sept probably.
Hi LittleX, I find rally cars always look like they're moving on gravel, much more difficult (for me anyway) to convey speed on tarmac events - although Jason's shot is v.cool!
LittleX 19 Jul 2003, 22:52 Hi Jason. Great shot.
Guess I spoke too soon.:bag:
thx.
I like Rally shots a lot too and I'd love to do some Rally shots. The only snag is I live miles away from any decent Rally events :(
Also, it may be just me, but it seems really hard to find out where/when rallies are being held in the UK whereas circuit racing is always really well publicised.
J
paul-collins 23 Jul 2003, 16:37 I've got loads I'm really happy with from my most recent shoot.
Here's a good one:
http://www.champweb.net/photos/Toronto/images/TMI-PC-51.jpg
I guess to a certain extent it's like asking a driver "what's the best car you've ever driven?" The answer is as often as not "the last one I drove."
Alfaholic 23 Jul 2003, 23:41 Jean Alesi, Donington 2002. Poor quality scan from a matt finish photograph, but I've had a 30x20 inch poster created from the original negative which looks so much better.
Wednesday 18 June 2003. Nick Heidfeld (Sauber). It's the result of my attempt to capture an F1 car "side-on". I nearly got all the car in the picture.
woodyracing 24 Jul 2003, 00:15 what do you think of this one ?

Aysedasi 24 Jul 2003, 14:47 Loads of great photos here people :)
I take very few motorsport pics these days, the one exception being at Le Mans where I take loads. The only problem is that as time goes on and getting into decent spots for pics without a media pass gets harder and harder, I seem to have a greater proportion of really naff shots.
I guess this is still one of my favourites (probably as it features one of my all time fave cars!):-

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to contribute more than one picture (if so, please delete this), but this is Renault at the British Grand Prix. It was taken at 8.33am on Friday 18 July.
Ayse, that first one's beautiful - as soon as you see it all the noise and speed comes right back to you. Was it taken through a fence? Whenever I try that I still get the thick horizontal cables like this...
http://www.pbase.com/image/18913518
Actually now that I look at it again I can see that your fence is further away than mine - so the cables don't interfere so much. Where was it taken?

Ok, here is a photo taken from 3 weeks ago at Queensland Raceway in Australia for a round of the V8 Supercar series. This photo was teken during qualifying on the saturday. I use a Canon G3 and had a telphoto lens ont he camera at the time.

I also managed to grab this one too.
http://www.turnermotorsport.net/cars/QR_03/IMG_8104.jpg
Nice shots TMS - it's tricky to get the flames with a digital. Only thing I would say is that you're getting quite blue images - maybe because the telephoto is looking through a lot of atmosphere. Adjusting the levels a tad will restore some of the colour...
less blue (http://public.fotki.com/smarjoram/misc/lessblue.html)
or I'd be tempted to maybe push the blue green a bit further to give a cross processed effect...
more green (http://public.fotki.com/smarjoram/misc/moregreen.html)
(hope you don't mind me fiddling with your images)

Thanks heaps for the info. I am only an amatuer and love taking motor racing photos. I think I have to adjust the white balance on the camera too.

Do you know Stefan, I can't really remember! It was certainly shot through the fencing, but, just for once, I got the timing and exposure just about right. I suspect it may have been down the Ford Chicane area, but I could be wrong.

Very nice Farouk. I guess the only other thing I would have gone for is a much slower exposure to blur the wheels at least. Can be tricky though.

Thanks. Yeah thats the next thing Im working on. I should have time at the Monterrey Historics this year.
If you are trying to get rid of the blue cast on a humid day, use an 81a UV filter. It warms up the reds and yellows and filters out some of the blue tint of the air.
Nice shot of the V8 Supercar.

pistonenvy 6 Aug 2003, 03:14 Good selection of photos here. It"s difficult to choose a favourite. Here is my current one from this years festival of speed. Canon D60, 28-105 lens, 1/250 aperture priority, exposure compensated by 1 stop to allow for strong sunlight.
quality shot pistonenvy! what were the costs in setting yourself up with a D60? I've currently got a Minolta Dimage 7i, but was thinking about upgrading to a digi slr of some kind......

Crash Test 6 Aug 2003, 23:20 TMS- love the Aussie Racers shot... that one had the makings of the world's biggest ever accident... ;)
This one was taken last Sunday at Rockingham during the 2nd Seat Coupra race, with my new Fuji S602zoom
possibly the most in focus picture i have ever taken. composition not great admittedly.
jamie green, tarzan hairpin, rockingham 3/8/03.
1/350, f11, 420mm lens, iso 200, under exposed by 2 or 3 stops and white balance adjusted to ensure strength of colours.
pistonenvy 7 Aug 2003, 00:30 Bentos,
It cost me 2,500 euros for the camera body + 300 euros for the 1 Gigabyte microdrive. That's about 1,850 pounds. It takes all my lenses from my EOS 300 However do not be alarmed by the price. The D60 is now discontinued in favour of the D10 which is an improvement and the body also costs about 1900 euros (1270 pounds). The drives have dropped in price & the capacity increased to 2GB +. I can get about 350 - 400 pictures on the drive at high res jpeg. Half that with the RAW files. It is a lot of money for initial outlay, but you save on film in the long run, don't have to worry about how much & what speed film to take with you and save large amounts of time scanning pictures into the PC. You also don't have to worry about dust/scratches on the negative. I used to be a bit sceptical about this "new fangled digital stuff" but am now converted.
A good site for the D10 review is here,

Here is another that I have. This one was taken at the Adelaide 500 on the Saturday afternoon in the Konica race with my Canon G3.

I travel all over the place seeing different types of motorsport. Check out my website for the whole gallery. I started with a Canon IXUS 300 (you can tell by the older photographs) and still am a complete amatuer. I have bought a Canon G3, however in Manual mode I am having heaps of trouble getting the colours rights. I think I need to adjust the white balance but I am not sure. Can anybody give me some advice?
Cheers, LT

In short - I want one!!
If you are thinking about the 10D (which is a great camera btw, i've got one and love it) I'd go for high speed CF rather than a microdrive for motorsports shots, as the write speed is very important.
My first somewhat successful panning shot, taken last weekend at the ALMS race in Trois Rivières, Québec.

Superb shots everyone, I really love your Le Mans Shots Ayse. I've not really done any photography at all but have just invested in a Samsung Digimax 240 Digital Camera so hopefully I'll be posting shots here soon.
Aysedasi 10 Aug 2003, 12:06 Trouble is Damon, I only post the occasional good one.
People don't get to see the loads of bad ones..... ;) :(
neil_davidson2 12 Aug 2003, 11:07 I found this thread a couple of days ago and it inspired me to go and dig out a few shots from my pre-marshalling days...
The first one isn't the sharpest pic I ever took, but it's from a time when the men drove the cars and the cars had skirts. Taken with my trusty old Practika MTL manual everything - and it needs cropping from the top!
neil_davidson2 12 Aug 2003, 11:08 The next two are slightly more up to date, taken with a Canon EOS10, most likely in Shutter Priority with a Shutter speed of 125, on Kodak 100 and at the sharp end of a 100-300 zoom.
neil_davidson2 12 Aug 2003, 11:09 Ditto - this has been cropped on all four sides
neil_davidson2 12 Aug 2003, 11:10 And finally - one with a roof...also taken with the EOS10

Skippy,
I don't agree. You have a buffer available for 8 frames! If you look at the reviews on the net you can see that the 10D is not the fastest writer (way slower then the Nikon 100D).
All pictures on my site were taken with the 10D.
/s.
vwpilot 13 Aug 2003, 20:46 It depends. Write speed can sometimes be very important and sometimes not.
I would go CF for the reasons of that I just dont trust Microdrives. I know of too many people haveing them fail on them. They are fragile and if you drop them you have a very good chance of losing everything on them since they are little mechanical drives.
Any type of shooting that has you hiking around and moving a lot I would avoid MDs. Something like studio work would be fine, but I dont know how many times I have dropped cf cards. I'm sure I would have lost at least one MD by now.
rdjones 20 Oct 2003, 23:02 Well the season has finally finished and I have just spent the last hour or so going through the best part of 3000 pics that I have taken this season and this is best I can come up with. Luke Hines during Qualifying at Oulton Park:-

heres one from pembrey this year (it was wet as usual)
gi_gav, very nice shot of the Alex Job Porsche at Le Mans! Those are my favorite types of shots - with trees or other green in the foreground, and the car in the background.
Great stuff by all though!
>from pembrey this year (it was wet as usual)
I think I've been to Pembrey on 4 occaisions in as many years, and its always been warm and sunny!! :-)
Cheers Jay - i'd actually been wanting to take that type of shot for years, and i was thrilled that the Alex Job one came out. I've actually got a few more (like one of the Corvette) when the car is only partly visible through the trees, which also looks pretty cool.
I'd love to see other people's 'greenery' shots if you have them
Kelvin WroteI think I've been to Pembrey on 4 occaisions in as many years, and its always been warm and sunny!! :-)
I'v been three years now this year they renamed the hairpin "the swimingpool complex" (25th practice 26/27 July race)allways got wet
hope I'm there when you are next
gi_gav, I have a few from Montreal this year...and I think this was one of the neatest...not really green, but still interesting...
nice shot - i think the contrast between nature and the cars in that type of shot really brings out the drama of it all

Indeed you can, my Dad has video evidence of me sleeping on a bench there at about 4am! :)
Aysedasi 5 Nov 2003, 19:29 Its a nice spot to take a breather in the middle of the night. The benches also have the advantage of giving you the chance to gain a few inches in height to get above the fencing with a bit of flash. For an amateur photographer, trying to get any halfway decent flash shots at Le Mans is a nightmare - I have so many pictures I've binned of beautifully illuminated debris fencing..... ;) :(

ayse you'd be lucky if your flash carried that far anyway, leave it at home the next time! you'd be better experimenting with some 800 neg pushed a couple of stops...or even better digital.

Emotive Images 13 Nov 2003, 18:21 Possibly not my best shot, but right up there!
This was taken at the Centenary Phoenix Park Races in Dublin this summer. I took several hundered photos at the two day event and got a number shots I'm very pleased with.
I was shooting with a Fuji Finepix S304 digital camera. It's a great little camera but not at all suited to shooting motorsports. It doesn't have shutter priority, the autofocus cannot track moving subjects and the viewfinder display freezes as soon as you press the shutter. I try to work around these limitations as best I can.
Settings: 1/105th sec at F8.2
-Mark.
After hunting around these I re-discoverd these forgotten images, which in ended up in the 2002 Clio Cup Galley .

Cheers Ayse.
I like the fact that lacking expensive lenses (or even an SLR, in the case of Emotive's shots earlier) forces you into improvising shots that you'd miss otherwise.
Every other photographer was getting the standard head-on and close shots with their 300mm f2.8 lenses, while i was crouched behind a bush armed with a flashgun, having a marvellous time! :)
Aysedasi 18 Nov 2003, 14:41 300mm f2.8? I should be so lucky..... ;)
But it mjust goes to show that the enthusiastic amateur can come up with darned good shots. And we have to be pretty creative at times!
G_Ilott 18 Nov 2003, 15:49 300 2.8s aren't *that* expensive!
After all, I've got one and I'm a total pauper. Or did I just dream about appearing in Oliver Twist....
Depends how much you're likely to use it.
For me, I can either aim at a 300 2.8 to use with my existing film cameras or i can go for a 10D -- overall, i reckon the 10D is a bigger advantage than the lens.
Aysedasi 18 Nov 2003, 19:04 I agree (but then I would, wouldn't I..... ;)).
So how much does a 300mm 2.8 go for, roughly?
Jessops prices, so will be found cheaper elsewhere (not to mention second hand)
Canon EF 300mm f2.8L USM IMAGE STABILISED £4249.90
TAMRON 300mm F2.8 SP LD(IF) CANON AF £2299.90
SIGMA 300mm f2.8 EX (CANON AF) £1799.90
G_Ilott 18 Nov 2003, 22:27 I have a Mk2 Tokina 300 2.8 which I researched for about 4 months before purchase, finding that it outperformed the Sigma and wasn't that far off the Canon if you forget about the IS. Focus speed is quick, almost on a par with the Sigma 70-200 HSM I have although it could really do with a focus limiter function as it sometimes goes right up the focus range before heading back again and locking on, but only with low contrast subjects where autofocus trips up anyway.
Of course, focus speed is determined by your camera also. I use an EOS 1N.
I would point you to a review but the site is down for some reason.
Mine cost £1100 from Mifsuds here in the UK. They don't have any more, only Mk3s nearer £2000. But you can find them used but you do have to hunt.
I see one shop in AP this week has a Sigma 500 4.5 for £1300. I'm severely tempted.
Hugewally 19 Nov 2003, 00:38 I kinda like this one from The '03 Monterey Historics

Jessops prices, so will be found cheaper elsewhere (not to mention second hand)
Canon EF 300mm f2.8L USM IMAGE STABILISED £4249.90
TAMRON 300mm F2.8 SP LD(IF) CANON AF £2299.90
SIGMA 300mm f2.8 EX (CANON AF) £1799.90
Not that expensive?
Obviously my definition of "expensive" is a little different to some others....... I have to say that there is noooooooooo way I'd be spending 4 grand on a lens......

Thanks...
Taken with the Canon EOS-1D and if I remember correctly, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and a polarizer...

Really lovely shot!
I think it really works because of the different angles that the foreground and background cars are at - is that the entry to the corkscrew at Laguna Seca?
Hugewally 23 Nov 2003, 16:25 Tanks Gi!! It's at the top of the corkscrew midway between the two turns where the road starts to drop away for the right hander...

calcium 26 Nov 2003, 18:59 Hey, there's far too many car pics :) Come on, where's the bike nuts? I can't be the only one on here. I'm going for a rummage through my photos............I'll be back :) :)

These photo's were taken by myself, so please do not use them anywhere else:

These were all taken with my Dad's (at least) 10yr old Canon camera and a 70-210mm lens. They were then scanned in using my 3-4yr old scanner. Not the best equiptment in the world but its all I can afford at the moment ;)
Hope you like em' :)
There's some good shots there but your scanner - or the prints have a slight pink cast. If you have photoshop or something similar - try the auto levels (or adjust them manually) it'll improve them no end.
Photo cleaner is also a great piece of software for tidying up and resenting images. Best of all it costs about £9.
here's one I adjusted a bit...

Stefan, do you have any taken with your new 300D?
I'm still getting used to it - and there aren't many races on at the moment unfortunately. I think it'll work very well though.
The only car shot I have is of a scumbags muddy footprint on the bonnet of my 911 after they broke into my garage and stood on the car to reach a shelf.
Cheers for the hint stefan! I think all my hardware lets me down to be honest! :( The camera is old and lens is dusty, also the scanner is turd too :(
I'll have a fiddle next time I get some photo's developed ;)
Don't blame the equipment - there are plenty of wonderful photos taken with £10 plastic cameras here (albeit medium format)...

It's all about timing and compostion and stuff. You already have a good talent for capturing the exciting moments - and a few minutes in photoshop is all that's needed to do the photos justice.
ye old Diana, when I was in school there were a couple of students doing projects with them. Like you say, it can be a liberating experience with a camera like that, although I think that aspect of it is not the same as back in pre-digital days.
Stef, you should put up that gorgeous shot of the GTO, taken on the ground, with magic hour sky above from the Historic Lemans of last year or the year before, great shot.
calcium 29 Nov 2003, 15:40 Ok, here's my first pic. The late Steve Hislop. One of the best Superbike riders ever.
calcium 29 Nov 2003, 15:46 This is Glen Richards taken at Lodge Corner at Oulton Park. I like this one because he purposely stared right at me ( instead of looking where he was going:eek:  )
wait 'til you see the whites of their eyes and all that!!
superb shot!
