Tomas Scheckter was signed on by the McLaren Mercedes team to compete in the F3000 championship for the remaining four races of the 2000 season.
He'll be replacing Stephane Sarrazin.

He commented on his new appointment and said: 'I am very excited about the prospect of driving for one of the best teams in the world.
I enjoyed the test and look forward to the race in Austria. It will be a real challenge for me and I am ready to respond positively to all the new experiences F3000 will bring.
I will be continuing in my bid to win the British F3 Championship and I believe that this opportunity can only enhance those efforts.'

If he makes a success of the remaining four races, he might find himself with a signed F3000 drive for the 2001 season, just one step away from entering the Formula one arena.

Apparantly Sarazin and co-driver Thomas Enge didn't do so well this year according to the sponsors.
It seemed they demanded a replacement driver for the rest of the season.
Why they wanted Sarazin to leave and not Enge I don't know.

It was a shame to see Stephane replaced - and Mr. Scheckter hardly did a great job in Austria. Sarrazin is an excellent driver who deserves a chance. Still, it means he is now free to go elsewhere - and I would suggest swiftly replacing Mazzacane at Minardi, not that it's likely to happen...
