It's 1974, either a round of the national saloon championship or practice for the 6 hour ETCC race. It's a works car, 24-valve head and something like 420 BHP.

it is indeed Hans Stuck in a works BMW at a place called 'flugplatz' which translate as airport or the place where you start to fly. mind you this is a piece of the track where after a 2k straight there is a 30 m elevation and this is the result, it is totaly blind piece of the track. if you are ever in europe you should visit this track !!! it is almost every day op to the public (check their webiste first or call) and for 10 euro a lap have some fun.

If you guys take a look at www.csccgb.co.uk there's one there (obviously it's only parked)- that is also a 'Batmobile' from the early 70's and is a regular competitor in the Classic Thunder championship, so when you're over next you might see it in action if you plan carefully. Btw for you BMW fans we also have the ex Hans Stuck 'Diners Club' 635 BMW (which superceded the Batmobile) and a 2002 Turbo racing in the championship too......

Frank, I would normally defer to your expert knowledge of the ETCC, but in fact, the photo is taken during practice for the 750km race on May 19 1974, the 3rd round of the World Sportscars.

The car's number in the race (in which it retired with a seized transmission) was 71, and the photo with the number 71T visible denotes a training shot. And why - apart from the sheer spectacle - was this picture so widely distributed? Because Stuck took 14 whole seconds off the Group 2 lap record around the Nurburgring that day, with a time of 8mins 12.8secs. To put that in context, the standing Formula 1 record at the time was 7mins 11.4secs.

Now that's motoring.

Blast. Of course you're right Tim. I always forget the WSC races where the BMW-Ford battle raged on, but a little at the back of course. Crazy. BMW had a massive budget cut, yet they raced at the 1000 km but left out most ETTC races. At Zandvoort, I saw 2 works Capris - but no works BMW...

Wasn't the 'flugplatz' where Manfred Winkelhock had that amazing accident in his Formula 2 car in 1980? Thats what is mentioned in Havoc 4. I question this abit though because from the pic of Stuck's car it indicates he is going through a left-hander, yet the hump in which Winkelhock flips is a straight.

Learn something everyday, shame we don't see them fly like Stuck though, nowadays its Dingle Dell at Brands although they get nowhere near as airborne.

Last time an F1 car did that (with the exception of Ralf) must have been hakkinen kerb hopping in the Mclaren, though I forget which track.

One of the best races I remember watching was the TT at Silverstone in 1973. The works BMWs like the pictured example against the Cologne Capri's. Quite a spectacle. However I would have loved to have had the opportunity to see HJ Stuck in action at the 'Ring! That is a very impressive photo and I'll have to try and dig some out from my archives of other cars ( including F1) flying at the Flugplatz.

That '73 TT must be an all time cassic. I was not there but it was on TV and has been shown since. I seem to recall one BMW and One Capri were neck and neck for the whole of the 100 odd laps.

I saw the TT's at Silverstone for many years after that, the big Camero's with the dolly sprints chasing, the amazing Jag XJ's. Always a good race.

There is quite a few F1 photo's from the 60's showing the cars airbourne, and I think I have seen some of fairly recent Sportscars as well.

Thanks SL, great picture. I've seen lots of pictures of Jackie at the 'ring, this one is probably one of the most spectacular. I wonder how he landed it.

This is James Hunt in his first International F3 race at Cadwell Park on 28th September 1969, he finished 4th.

These threads have sent me scurrying to my albums of 60s/70s races when I used to do some snapping (very nearly got choked to death from the dust).

sorry to correct you all:
the big jump of the BMW is not at Flugplatz, but at a section between Planzgarten and Schwalbenschwanz. At this place cars are still jumping today. The formula 2 (j.Oliver) is jumping at a crest in section Kesselchen,
this one does not exist today, because it was flattened in 1970. The big crest at Flugplatz is still alive, here M. Winkelhock had his looping backwards, but here also Cris Irwin stopped his career by destroying the Alan Mann 3 Litre prototype completly, getting heavy head injuries himself.
At the old Ring were many jumping places, and if you see flying racing cars, they mostly pictured at good old Nordschleife.

I was wondering if anyone happened to watch this documentary during this past weekend?It was on SpeedTV in North America.

I have seen it before and I thought it was excellent.

Jackie Stewart was driving a car around the Old Nurburgring and was saying how difficult the circuit was to drive and pointing out how to drive the old monster,very interesting.

Stewart on the Old Nurburgring:

"Every lap I do at the Nurburgring I make a mistake,I never go through the Nurburgring feeling that I've achieved something in the way of the perfect lap."

I also enjoyed the Francois Cevert interview as well.

ps, back to the 3.0 Beemers. There is one that lives in Montreal somewhere, I see it once in a while, and I always remark how its' lines are as classy as when I first saw one as a teenager. Don't know about over in Europe, but they were always rather rare over here.

Just checked the results for the 67 German GP and Jochen Rindt retired after 4 laps with steering problems. Don't know where on the circuit but I think we three (!) can be pretty sure that it is indeed Jochen Rindt enjoying the rest of the race from a rather perilous spectating position!

While completely understanding improved safety of tracks, and restricting peoples access to dangerous positions, the "man with a camera" part of me (not to mention the motorsport fan part) sees photos like this and wishes I could pop back in time and have access to wonderful photo taking positions, not to mention doing my "fly on the wall" thing with racing legends out of car.

I agree, a photo like that just sends shivers down your spine. It captures the power, the danger, the glory that once was F1. A picture of a modern F1 car going round a corner like it's on rails just doesn't have the same (any?) impact.

Let me know when you are popping back in time, and save me a space!

Those 60's F1 cars were soooo g*ddam fragile too, thanks to Mr Chapman and his disregard for driver safety. The death rate among drivers ran at about 30% over a racing career. How the h*ll thay didn't just fold up on landing I con't know!

Going back to Stuck flying the BMW, it is one of the LAT/Motor Sport collection which is now available as a poster, along with other classic photos such as Siffert & Rodriguez doorbanging their 917s at Spa '70, GV on 3 tyres and a flat at Zandvoort '79, Fangio's 4-wheel drift at Rouen '57, etc.
