North American Track Days?

What circuits do you know of that have lapping days?

May 2, June 6, July 11, Sept 19, Oct 18. They're called Howard Dexter Lapping Days, after the organizer, Dr. Dexter. He has a website:

Price is $Cdn 335 per day (until February - prices rise after that), newbies have to take instruction @ $Cdn 250.

He lists Ste Jovite as well, but the track owner has doubled his price and capriciously cancelled dates, so Howard's not going to go to that track any more.

An organization called trackmasters (www.trackmasters.com) does most of their track days, with a few others (tracquest, performance driving association, group 52, and more) taking a few other days.

This leads me to think that I should start asking about organizations and their differences. Obviously they all have some driving schools attached, at the very minimum for novices.

Does anyone have experience with these organizations? Are they the dominant method of getting track day time in North America? How about elsewhere?

Here in Michigan we have two. One is 20 miles away, Waterford Hills Raceway :p . The other is four hours away, Gingerman Raceway.

I work at Ford and there is FME [Ford Motorsports Enthusiasts] as well as SCCA [Sports Car Club of America], which is probably the best way of determining where/when for both HPDE [high-perf driving events] and autocrosses/SOLO/time trial events. Being a Type R owner there are several clubs that are CONSTANTLY touring circuits all over the place - just hop online to http://www.itrca.com or http://www.honda-tech.com. So there are many ways to get involved. SCCA [http://www.scca.org] being THE "grassroots" motorsport organization would be the best place to start. There is a magazine Grassroots Motorsports http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com that is really cool for that sort of thing.

Also one cannot overlook the various auto clubs like Ferrari, Porsche Corvette and Honda clubs. They are always putting on local events at Gingerman and Waterford Hills. Then there are the Lotus Clubs, Mustang clubs...

There are a number of groups that host track days in the Western U.S. Phoenix has three, two of which also run at tracks in other states. First-timers must take a school which includes classroom and lead-and-follow for the first day. Prices are approx. $200 U.S. This gets you approx. 60 minutes on track in three or four sessions.

There are also some private companies that will rent you a car to do these days.

Each of these groups runs street car groups and race car groups on the infield road course at Phoenix International Raceway, the road course at Firebird Raceway and the brand new Arizona Motorsports Park.

Each of these groups has minor licensing requirements which probably will be waived if you have been doing this already.

scca.org is a true racing organization which has stricter licensing and safety requirements and runs amateur events throughout the U.S.

Calgary's RaceCity has some lapping days.
During the summer Solo 2 events are held in the 1/2 mile oval and at the southern end of the road course.
