new digital camera

Am going to the Mondello BTCC race next Monday with my new Olympus C-700 digital camera. Can anyone give me some recommendations on focal length, shutter speed and so forth, or would I (as a beginner) be better off leaving it on AUTO and hoping for the best?

I have a c-720 and I have found I need to use the sports mode, prefocus and pray ;)
