It is Dick Seaman in his GP Delage - a ten year old car beating the modern opposition after a "modernisation" by Ramponi. Little wonder that Seaman was snapped up by Mercedes Benz!

Mrs B's link appears to be unhappy, so here is an alternative view.

My vote goes for the 250F, but as a photo has already been posted of it, how about this one - a bit more obscure, the 4.7 litre Kincraft-Ford from 1968.

then there is the current Raynard Champcar, and the purposeful beauty of a supermodified...

Now thereby hangs a tale .... for many years that pretty little baby was thought to be the E-type Auto Union .... but actually, it isn't even an AU (despite the four ring badge), let alone the E-type.

I reckon the best looking open wheeler in its day was the Lola T400 F5000. It is a pity it didn’t quite preform as well as it looked!

I'd certainly agree with most of the suggestions so far- Eagle, 250F, Lotus 25 etc- One I'd be tempted to add to my own list is the Lotus 72- if only because as a kid (aged about 6 or 7..) it was the first F1 car I really remember, and it really caught my imiagination big-time

Surely the Lotus 79 in JPS colours is the best ever, so smooth, quick looking, and performance matched the looks. Also, tho' I accept not classical in the usual sense, the March 782 always looked great to me.

Wayne,
Probably in a skip at the bottom of the Cresta Run, or similar place. Hugo Spowers [the some might say eccentric driver] was into dangerous activities. I believe he once went down the Cresta Run in a Van Diemen, so when his Prowess didn't set the FF1600 world on fire, he may well have sledged it.
BTW Do you think he knows [or cares] that there is a Van Diemen right up his chuff? Is it me, or is the Prowess devoid of mirrors?

I like the 'lowline' Brabham from the early/mid eighties (can't remember the model number. but somebody else is sure to). Looked great, but wasn't fast enough (although, how much of that was due to Pirelli is a topic for debate)

OK BugEyed - both were racing cars, so do count in my book as all early racers had the travelling mechanic in them thar days...

Love the Bentley too, but I fell in love with the Hispano when I was a small boy. It has beautifull detailing and is actually very delicate - a bit like a Gazelle. Always wanted one, but still haven't made the millions I need in spite ov over 1/2 century of trying...

Some great suggestions guys!

Here are my choices:
1930s - Mercedes-Benz W125
1950s - Alfa Romeo 159, Vanwall, Scarab!
1960s - Eagle-Weslake, Clark's 65 Indy winning Lotus (forget the type number!)
1970s - Lotus 72, Brabham - BTanything with Martini livery!
1980s - Leyton House March
1990s - Ferrari 641, Jordan 191, Williams FW14B

There have been some good looking Indycars and F5000s too, but I can't recall the type numbers at mo!

At any given time there is usually one current car that catches the eye, until fashions change (not at the moment, all F1's look the same), so when I got interested in cars in 1962 it was the BRM P578 (before they gave it the wider engine cover for the German GP), then the 1966 Ferrari 312 with the 24-valve engine (Surtees at the Belgian GP), the Eagle of course (which I saw win the '67 RoC), the BRM P153 in its original green & orange livery, the 1974 Hesketh 308 and Lola T400 (I agree, lovely bodywork but a dog - not surprising, have you seen the front suspension?), 1978 Lotus 79 'Black Beauty', then a big gap to the 1987-88 Ferrari 187, and after that............nothing really.

But my all-time aesthetic winner is the 1963-64 Ferrari 156 Aero in which Bandini won the 1964 Austrian GP.

As you will appreciate I am very much against 15" wheels. If you look again the perspective will show that the Amilcar is running 18" wheels. She is very much a vintage girl!
