Formula 2 Pictures

Hello,
I'm always pleased to see instructive posts on cars i like. And i am always looking in the posts for pictures (like many others might do). So i feel always frustrated to see such informative posts as the ones on March and Chevron with no pictures. So, to repair that and show the youngers what was the real F2 (a real non-single chassis non-single engine formula with real menn at the wheel), here are some pics, coming frome French Sport-Auto(s) of the days:

The 1980 European Champion Brian Henton and his Toleman-Hart TG280 :

At Misano, Siegfried Stohr started on pole with his private Toleman, but had brakes trouble and did not finish, but he won at Enna :

That year, Richard Dallest won Pau and Zandvoort :

In 1979, Eddie Cheever won 3 races but failed to win the championship with his Osella on Pirelli tyres (seen at Pau where he won)

Have you got more pictures of the march 792?? when i saw the picture I thought 'thats nice' then you said it was ugly. The B48 is much uglier.

Chofar
10 Feb 2004, 22:53
Well, in a fair amount of threads, i read the 792 was ugly, and also not that much competitive. What i discovered is that , had Derek Daly not missed 3 races that year to compete in F1 with Ensign, hes surely would have been champion. i have no other 792 to show now, but this is the chevron-Ferrari of Elio de Angelis in 1978. To be continued...

I always preferred Chevrons to Marches anyway
Great to see these cars and their pilots again though...brings a tear to the eye

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been requesting images of F2 for years and had almost given up ever finding any. And it's from my favourite era ('77-'82) - mostly because it was when I first got into motorsport. More please. Absolutely fantastic. Bringing back all those memories.....aaah.

Dan Rear
13 Feb 2004, 19:02
angst, hear hear, F2 was superb in that era. The Cheever Osella is a lovely looker and quick too, it won at the early 79 Silverstone Int Trophy in the wet, a real shock given previous F2 Osellas, and the domination of March thru' 78. Great race that, Daly, Henton both led until late on, many spun off in the wet. That year had some great drivers in F2, many graduted to F1 in the next few years. More than anything though there was great chassis variety.

The Daly car pictured is a B42-Hart in 78, I guess the same meeting as the start at the Ring in 78, and all those gorgeous 782s, Ribeiro leading from the Project 4 and works cars, the Chevrons well back at that stage of the year. Is that the Boxer I spy near the back on the right of the photo, Danny Sullivan maybe ?

Sorry. Need to do some homework on this. Grrrr..

The Easter monday F2 meeting was a favorite of mine for many years.
The Maurers & Ralts where my favorites, great looking and sounding, close racing by people who knew that it mattered to to do well as F2 was the stepping stone to F1 for both drivers and often teams.

Where did it all go wrong?

I do have some pictures from then and I need to find and post asap.

Chofar
16 Feb 2004, 22:08
I get back to this topic some days after. I'd be glad to see your own pics. These ones are just scanned while it's still possible. I never saw those car racing, but always liked to see them sometimes on magazines. Finding them in model cars is really tough too and I only have one Elf2 in poor condition. In France there was a little sum-up after every race when the f2 was full of our drivers. I know some of them are not very popular arounfd here so I might post pictures of every nationality. Nordic asked when did it all go wrong ? IMHO it when wrong when F2 wasn't seen as the basical step to F1 and when there were more 2nd hand DFV to sell than M12 BMW or V6 Hondas. And it went further wrong when 'they' decided to make F3000 a one-chassis one engine formula. And when everybody could rename any Jag in a Mazda then a Porsche and the same to the engines...
Now back to roots:
Maurizio Flammini on his winning March 762 in Rouen (1976):

Chofar
16 Feb 2004, 22:13
I must add that Cheever won every rainy race in 1979 due to his Pirelli tyres and that his car was in fact the 1975 chassis with some 'wing-car' additions à la Osella.
Real wing-car this time: Brin Henton's Ralt RT2 (1979):

Yes, the trio of Marches at The Nurb is Ribeiro center (jesus saves), Cheever on the right and Hoffmann on the left. Giacomelli is just behind Ribeiro. But Ribeiro won his only race that year.
I saw an F3 Matra running 2 or 3 times in France, The F2 is very similar, some may be at the firm's museum in Romorantin.

I forgot to add that Cheever and Hoffman were running (with not much success that year), Mr Ron Dennis cars.

There were several F2 / F3 Matras on display at the Romorantin museum when I went there last year - along with a number of F1s, sports prototypes, concept cars, design studies etc. Well worth a visit.

Chofar
17 Feb 2004, 22:56
Never went there, but i saw some cars on display At the defunct Automobile Center in Pantin (Paris). Very impressive and important cars (at least from a french point of view).
What is sad is they stop all automobile activity last year. I wonder if it will affect the museum
Anyway , front row of the Enna race in 1968: Pesca (Matra)left with Courage (Brabham) on the right. The second row is 75 meters back the first to avoid crashes. Rindt (Brabham) the king of F2, will win in front of Courage. Pesca will finish 8th

Nice to know that they are still around, it would be even nicer to see them in the Euro F2 or is now FORCE events.

To the general asking, an other 792 :
D.Warwick, Pau 1979 (rainy)
I'm becoming short of good shots of 792, it will be time to start on another year. Funny thing about the 792 is also the shape of the roll hoop : it seems bigger than many of the day. All in all it makes a mighty machine.

Andrew, you'll be sorry to learn that the brickworks have all been demolished and the sugar beet factory is now a housing estate. 12 miles from Peterborough is just about safe - I live about 15 miles away!

Can't believe we have some people on here who like the 792, a truly awful looking machine IMHO ! That Pau shot of Warwick reminds me of the May 79 Aurora at Mallory when he finished 2nd to Keegan, beating all other F1s, in the rain. He was brilliant that day, beating the elements, and more powerful cars, though I guess the other drivers were a class below him in talent.

Chofar
20 Feb 2004, 21:39
Ok, so no more 792.
Back to 1976, Hockenheim championship final. Hans Binder had the fastest B35-BMW that day. He finished 4th behind the Renault squad

Chofar
20 Feb 2004, 22:13
At the same race, there was this machine. Very 312-T2-like, IMHO.
Does anyone know what and Who is it ? (if it's too easy, i will be ridiculous...)

Is it a Warsteiner (TOJ)? With perhaps a Finnish driver? I can very vaguely remember it.

Not KK Rosberg!

Bryan Miller
21 Feb 2004, 10:13
But, the trick question is , what is the car lurking around at the rear of the strange device, Is it an ATS , or a Lola or Chevron with ATS sponsorship.
And please someone in the U.K. West Lancs division please deal appropriately with said gentleman who does not like March 792's.

Bryan.

Chofar
21 Feb 2004, 10:38
Indeed it's a Toj !
With a certain Keijo (?) Rosberg at the wheel. He finished 5th this time. The car behind is another Chevron, driven by Jochen Mass this time. In the same article (copyright AutoHebdo), there's a Lola T450, but the picture is on 2 pages, so not very much showable. Another tricky question : who drives The Europa Mobel (?) March behind Binder's Chevron on the first pic ?

No 23 March is Kauhsen car of Klaus Ludwig, before he became a tin-top legend.

Great F2 photos, but does anyone have a photograph of the Carlo Giorgio March 742(Jolly Club) which he raced from 1974-79?

Chofar
22 Feb 2004, 20:05
That's indeed Klaus Ludwig. I have a few 74 pics, but can't remember of Giorgio's. I'll check later.

By now this is Jochen Mass in Hock '76, with boots off.
That meeting was a huge meeting, with , at least, 2 heats of F2, Formula Vee, DRM, and 2 heats of world 750cc cup for motorbikes. That's what i call value for money.

Thruxton 82? (http://rupert8766.fotopic.net/c125907.html)

Heres a link to some photos of the Easter F2 meeting at thruxton, I think it was 82 but am not sure as the pictures where all loose in a box.

Chofar,

Please, more 792s! Don't listen to that Dan fella! ;)

Might not have been March's best effort, but it was just about my favourite

Chofar

I really like your pics, Nordic. There are far superior to mine in the fact that you took them yourself. I never attended F2 races, only F3000 from time to time. But I used a Zenit too in these days. I let the scanner cool for some days and then I'll be back to F2. In the meantime I hope to see some other personal pictures. And What is that Suze car ?

Chofar
2 Mar 2004, 11:09
Back to scan...
5 years before the 792... there was the 742 :
Patrick Depailler at Pau in another soaked race. He won that race and the championship. At the time, french were numerous in F2, and I scan french magazines, so be ready to see many of them (I'll try not to post too many Pironi pics to avoid some of these commentaries you don't expect to see in a forum of good taste)

Dan Rear
2 Mar 2004, 15:12
Chofar/Nordic, the Suze car is interesting. It seems to be in a tent with 2 other F2s, all 3 with different liveries. I wonder which team it was, as by 81/82, most teams were in similar liveries per car. Perhaps one of the smaller Italian teams, Sanremo or Merzario maybe, or possibly somke of the Germanic privateers sharing facilities, eg Schnarwiler/Hopfer etc.

Btw, one of the pics you've got in the 81 section, the Marlboro Spirit, should I think be in the 82 section. I know, I know, I am a complete anorak !! But I still hate the 792s...

Nordic
2 Mar 2004, 15:29
Thanks for that DR, what about the AGS? the picture is clearly form the same meeting?
I have moved the AGS to 82 as well, the picture shares the same background & foreground, now Ive seen a a shot of the same AGS in the paddock so I will move that later.

I have the program for the thruxton races, but they are not in an easily got to area so I will find out about the suza team

Nordic
2 Mar 2004, 15:31
Do you know where I can find a list of Aurora F1/2 entrants, they will be the next to be scanned and are even more randomly filed than the F2 ones!

Dan Rear
2 Mar 2004, 15:33
Nordic, don;t know about list of Auroras, but I'm sure if you post the pics there's plenty of knowledge on here to identify all cars/teams/drivers.

Jeremy Jackson
2 Mar 2004, 16:18
Nordic,

The no. 23 AGS is Strieff's JH19 from 1982. The no. 7 paddock photo would be 1983.

I have an Excel spreadsheet on all Aurora results exported from my database. If you want me to send it, let me know

Nordic
2 Mar 2004, 17:16
If theres one car form 83 there, I think there may be others, I doubt that I only took the one picture, or there may be some left in the boxes.
I'm happy now that 81 is correct and will need to start a new folder for 83 if there are enough pictures.

The Aurora scan should start at the weekend! theres not that many so it should be completed quickly, I will then start onto the touring cars and special saloons.

2 Mar 2004, 22:21
The suze car amazes me too. Did anybody of you ever drink Suze ?

Chofar
2 Mar 2004, 22:59
If it can help, it seems you have a mix in the Ralt Hondas onthe 82 page, with one team in race numbers 1-2 and on another pic there's a number 8 car(J.Palmer ?). Anyway, these are genuine documents. And i think we were not far from each other in 1986 at Le Mans ,too !!

Jeremy Jackson
2 Mar 2004, 23:23
The no. 8 is Palmer's '83 car. The Emco Spirits (F2Thruxton823) are from 1983 aswell.

Only Alexis' to have raced in F2 seem to be Mk4s. Paul Hawkins had one in early 1964,but not entered at Crystal Palace or Brands Hatch,so sorry no photos.John Ampt also seems to have run an F3 one in some F2 races!!! John Willmett team, for whom Hawkins ran, colours were usually red with 2 white stripes. I remember the Lola that replaced the Alexis later in 1964.

My Toleman TG280-01 in a BMW showroom in Enfield Middx in 1993 I bought the car in Milan from Alberto Columbo whose San Remo racing team ran himself and a host of Italian Rent-a-drivers in F2 & 3000. He owned a huge Moped chrome spoked wheel manufacturing business. The car did the European F2 championship 80,81,82,&83 ! It was Silver grey because it had been doing Italian TV adverts for Tissot watches , where overhead shots of the car changed shape in to a stainless steel watch.

He bought the car from Toleman in August 1980 it was the test car for Henton & Warwick during 1980 - the car on the front cover of Autosport with Stephen South testing at Goodwood in Feb/Mar 1980. For the sharp eyed you might notice in the picture its on 3000 tyres of a higher profile.

Hello

Really enjoyed reading this thread as I was a big fan of Formula Two throughout it's lifespan. F2 was a real mini Formula One with works teams, different chassis, different engines and some really great racing. I saw races at Thruxton, Spa, Old Nurburgring, Pau, Silverstone, Rouen, Zandvoort to name just a few. A really great time. In fact I was amazed to discover that the F2 replacement series, F3000, outlasted it by two years I think.

Nick
