Is someone able to give me the official, or correct reason for F5000 being dropped in Britain? I'm writing a story on the class here in New Zealand. Each of the countries that ran the class dropped it eventually, in NZ it just became too expensive, and local numbers dwindled. In the US they turned the class into a sort of second generation Can-Am.
What was the reason for it being dropped in Britain? And, for that matter, South Africa?
Thanks

Probably we went the same way as yourselves too
few cars willing to race, maybe cost related?.
If i am correct our F5000, Was superceded by Group 8, i e any single seater basically, ie Mainly
F1,F2,F/ATLANTIC etc. I am sure somebody else will have more knowledge and will post here.
Cost related as i stated does not stand up, if we then went to old F1 cars, i would have thought even more expensive?

F5000 was replaced with the Shellsport G8 series which was a mix of F5000; old F1s; F2s and F Atlantics, then went to a series for F1s and F2 in 1978, which for a couple of years was pretty good.
I think there were a number of reasons for the collapse of F5000
The most obvious is money: the economy in Britain in the mid 70s was a mess and there were too many formulae competing with each other for good teams and drivers.
The other immediate problem was engines [and therefore cost]. The search for extra horsepower in the Chevy block led to spiralling costs for the motors, and a disturbing propensity for the things to lunch themselves. If you wanted to be at the front you needed an engine that wasn't much cheaper than a DFV and which was likely to need replacing rather sooner... Look at the results for 1975 and you'll see what I mean. Retirements from engine failure were rife. If you ran a slow old motor you could consistently finish in the money as the quick boys blew up.
