D J Maltby

I recently purchased, on eBay, a box of motor racing memorabilia, apparently found in a shed. The contents of this box ranged from continental route maps, Castrol and BP racing achievements books, a few motor racing books, a dozen motor racing programmes from the period 1964-1968, a pair of fairly heavy duty gloves and a Marshal's armband with period Castrol logo. This all appears to have been the accumulated collection of a Mr D.J.Maltby, who during the mid sixties lived in Kenton, Harrow, Middlesex.

The programmes are all for big international meetings (1964 European GP at Brands, 1965 British GP and Guards International to name just three) and it is entirely possible, of course, that he attended these as a spectator. I haven't sifted through all the documents yet but, unless collected merely as momentos, the gloves, armband and other contents do indicate a more active participation in motor racing than just spectating.

Now, I know amongst you there are some mature (if I may use that term to say that, like me, you've been around a while!) marshals and racers who participated in the 1960's motor racing scene. Do any of you recall Mr Maltby as a marshal?

Bit of a long shot, but I knew a David Maltby during the period in question. He worked at Bristol Siddeley Engines, formerly De Havilland Engines in Stag Lane, Edgeware. He was, I believe, in the BRSCC and also Harrow Car Club. I recall that he rallied with the latter on club events, before such things became too difficult to organise. Maybe the club records survive.
Chris.

Chris, many thanks. This actually sounds potentially like a good call - right area, right time and with the right credentials. I'll try to follow this up with the appropriate clubs unless there is anyone out there who is a member of either with ready access to old club records?

I've now worked through all the documents. I'm pretty convinced that Chris has identified the right person. In the box there is a Summer 1966 copy of 'The Wheel', the magazine of the Engineering Faculty Society of Southampton which carries an article of the London to Brighton HCVC run, by Dave Maltby. I have also established that Mr Maltby enjoyed Continental touring and drove a Series 3, Sunbeam Alpine. Does any of this ring any bells with marshal's from that period?
