Who's racing what next year??

Dan Friel

Just to get a general idea...

Who's racing next year, in what car and in what championship??

Just so I know what series to avoid next year....

I'm not racing, but sending off for 'sprint' licence next month.. Midget is getting some work done to it as we speak..

I've currently got my budget for next year. All I need now is a second hand go ped and a championship to race it in!!!;)

I'll be racing in the Sportscar Club of America (SCCA) Improved Touring S class next year.

I built the suspension/cage/safety equipment into my E36 chassis BMW 325 over this past fall and tested it out in some BMW Club Racing. At the last race, the head gasket blew on my bone stock engine (with over 100,000 miles), so I am currently building the engine up to spec for the series I plan to race in.

I'll race in the South Atlantic Road Race Championship (SARRC), and hopefully attend the national championship for my series, the American Road Racing Championship (ARRC).

Wish me luck as this will be my first full season of racing. If I can run this season successfully, I'd love to look into a sponsorship and some professional racing next year in the Speedvision World Challenge series (America's version of Touring Cars). http://www.speedvisionwc.com/

I wish you all a good season of racing.

I shall continue with my Datsun 1600 (Nissan 510) in Historic Touring Car racing. In 2001 I plan to do every round of the State Championship, every historic meeting held in Queensland and two Historic Touring Car events in NSW.

With a bit of luck and a bit of cash, I shall be racing in the Old Spice Legends championship in the UK...

Alright, alright - shut up!! I've heard enough already :p

All I need to do is get my racing licence (the ARDS test is this weekend :D ) and possibly get some sponsorship..

Failing the sponsorship, I may elect to do Mighty Minis. I'll let you all know soon enough :)

Hey You! Potential Sponsor!! Don't give this man your money!! You know you'd rather see him do a season in Minis first! :D

Sorry Chris, It had to be said! ;)

And good luck on that licence... http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

aren't you racing the Capri in the CSCC next year?

Peter Mallett
9 Nov 2000, 11:32
I'll register but I won't be doing much without finance, especially now that the Rovers are becoming so much more competitive.

Chris Y
9 Nov 2000, 18:56
Maybe more competitive, but certainly a little unreliable. There were a fair few Rovers at Snetterton, but they all appeared to be smoking away, and a few didn't make the finish. You could beat them on reliability no problem...

you thinking about another series then?

Well, I came, I drove, I passed :)

Thanks for the good luck wishes all - they worked a treat..

My licence is 'in the post', and I have my overalls, etc.

If I'm feeling energetic later, I may post a report, and submit it to Parc Ferme.

Cool - thanks again! :rotate: :rotate:

Well I'll be back in the trusty Sunbeam to do battle in Grp1 for the early part of the 2001 season. Hopefully from May onwards I'll be campaigning a Peugeot 405Mi16 in the new pre90 series also being run by the CSCC. Myself and Rick (Grp1 - yellow XR3) have both bought roadgoing Mi16's and are currently turning them into piles of nuts and bolts in my lock-up. :D

What are the regs?? What cars can compete? And will they get enough cars for a full grid, or will they be in with something else??

I hope to be out in the CSCC Group 1s in UK next year in the RX7.
At present desperately seeking a budget as I have a £15K ($21K) tax bill for Jan01!!!!
Last year let the race budget get seriously out of hand and spent more than 50% of my net income!...and yes I forgot about the IRS in my excitement!

Next year I'm going to show more restraint and try to focus on the endurance races.

Jon Owen has sold his Rover and I expect it to be reappear painted lime green! This car is well sorted and only need a engine freshen and a new ECU to go very well indeed.
Jon will be out in Grp1 in an RX3 he's bought from Dave Nixon.

Well,
I should be out in the ActiveShop Clio 172 in the TOCA support championship once again...

There has been all sorts of alternative talk though with discussions about taking a Clio V6 into the European Clio Trophy, not least because they have a two rounds supporting the Monaco Grand Prix, but Renault won't confirm this will happen again next year... prize money is good but the cost of trucking the car round Europe is high...

There was also talk of a team in the South African Touring Cars, thought we had the cars and the backers but then they cancelled the Championship.

There was also some talk of a 911 GT3R at Daytona for the 24 Hours, still waiting to hear on that one, might struggle to raise the funds though.

Similarly, discussions about a car for Group B of the UK Touring Cars are stumbling over funds. Can get a car and a team, seem to need £150k though...

So I guess it's a Clio 172 again... which is not exactly a hardship. Could do with more sponsorship (couldn't we all?) as at the moment I seem to be sacrificing a limb a year to race. But another fun season beckons!

It’s a funny world isn’t it… I’m scrapping around looking for cash / pennies for my sprint licence, £50 entry fees for events and some K&N’s for my MG Midget… whilst Rick’s looking for the budget to go to Daytona!!!

Same game, different league!!

Sorry Dan,
Wasn't meant to read like that, I am lucky that my performances last year have opened a few doors.
Believe me it is still as frustrating, I now have the cars and the races of my dreams offered to drive, but they are still as far out of reach.
I never forget how lucky I am to be able to race at the level I do though.
Cheers

I didn't mean to sound jealous!! You didn't put it across badly - just made me chuckle thinking about it... Everybody should take every chance.

Everyone in the same boat, but on different scales!!

You have to get to Daytona, it would just be simply awesome!

I think financing is a very tricky subject. I'm about to enter my 3rd season of racing and all of it has been personally financed. No sponsors, no rich uncles and no immediate sign of that changing :-( Problem is that it's addictive.

The MSA have recognised that there's a problem in this country - we actually have too much motorsport and not enough paying viewers. Contrast this with the States where even clubman races have free entry and prize funds. Motor racing in this country is prohibitively expensive because we(the competitors) actually fund the race day. Over a 1/3 of my race year budget was made up of race entry fees.
The problem is that if the circuits relied on gate-fees to fund a race day they would never make a profit. Hence the push towards PowerTour/Premier Series where the circuits hope that an action day of racing will pull in the punters.

RickP:Clio51
16 Nov 2000, 16:14
I think you are right about Daytona, the 911 GT3R does over 175mph around the banking though and I'm really not sure my Gonads are big enough. Really like the idea of getting into enduro racing, get so much more value in terms of time in the car for money spent.
The Ultimate Goal is to run the Le Mans 24 Hrs just once and then hang up the helmet and grow up!

Hey Yelwoci , just incase you didnt know it appears a certain Mr. N.Garratt has bought that Rover you were talking about so it will be re-appearing in the group 1 - and I should think right on the pace.......and my own not so trusty steed(also a Rover-back to the original question) is now back from the workshop , new rocker shaft and sorted propshaft seemingly all ready for , hopefully , more than the single Classic Thunder race I managed this year. :)

Well I will be running a Mazda RX7 in 2001 in the Improved Production Victorian State Series also heading to the Nationals wherever they are, and maybe even running at Hidden Valley with the V8s if the subsidies are there again. I am currently putting together my budget, and looks like there is a chance will be upgrading to a 2 car team with aspirations of a three car team. Although there is talk about trying to raise the funds to run in GTP. I will probably start the season running in Sports Sedans hopefully around the pointy end, we have had a second in sports sedans, but the car is set-up for Improved Production but my Dad has been putting it on the front row so he gets another season playing with the boys while we decide where the team moves. Look out for our major marketing push soon, as we aggressively seek sponsors. hehehe. Currently we have Forty Winks (Camberwell and Glen Waverley), Kinchrome Tools, Three Bond, and Racefix Repairs. But there is always room for more. :rotate:

Ok Rick, I'll bite. This is going to be a bit like 20 questions! Is it Japanese? (My first thought was a Mazda Xedos 6). Whatever I look forward to seeing you race it at Combe next year (Mr. Strawford would never be so daft as to get rid of the Pagids, but if they keep growing the way they have over tha past couple of years you might need 2 races :):):):):))

While not as extravagant as some of ther other posts on this topic, I will be starting my first season as a driver in 2001.

My brother and I will be entering the Mini Cooper Register Speed Championship which is part of the Midland Speed Championship ( http://www.midlandspeed.org.uk ) in the 1990 Rover Cooper we have both used as a road car over the last 5 years before we got sensible cars :)

Gentle modifications will be atempted over the winter months ready for the first event in April.

Sounds pretty similar to what I'll be doing with my Midget next year.. Sent off for the licence this week and also carrying out slight modifications to the car.. How standard will the mini be?? Presume it's a pre injection one??

Just sorting out the events I'll do - hope to include Goodwood, Silverstone, Lydden, Gurston and Combe..

Just an update on my plans:

I've confirmed my entry to the Mighty Minis championship next year. :D

I've also just bought myself a J-reg Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i, which has already been racing in the championship for a few years.

Should be fun :) :rotate:

Dan,

Re: Mods to our Mini...

Yes, the Mini is one of the pre-injection Coopers, in its role as a roadcar the catalyst was removed (unsurprisingly it didn't work too well with a carb fed engine...) and some Metro Turbo vented discs and 4-pot brake calipers were added. Both of those make the car 'illegal' for the standard class in the MCR championship, so we'll be running in the 'Road Modified' class. The first stage of competition mods have been on the suspension, with the fitting of the usual Mini upgrades (hi-los, Konis, adjustable this-that-and-the-other) :)

The next stage (in association with our financial partners VISA, Mastercard and the National Westminster Bank's generous overdraft facilities :) ) will be a shiny new 1380cc engine, and rollcage and proper seat and harnesses.

The first event will probably be the double header of the Harewood hillclimb and Croft sprint on the weekend of the 15/16th April 2001.

8 Dec 2000, 20:18
Guy,

It's strange that you exactly the same sponsors as me!! they're very trustworthy I've heard...

You list all the mods that I wanted when I owned my tatty minis, hi-los were but a dream!!

You're doing more mods than me... K&N's and lowering are about as dynamic as it gets - oh and a decent set of tyres..

First event should be Finlake at the end of March - but some good events through out the year - including goodwood, excellent..

Going back to Rick's (CAR42) post,

10 Dec 2000, 17:57
Guy, when you order that 'shiny new 1380', insist that the block is 'offset-bored'.
This equalises the cylinder wall material, rather than having loads of material where it isn't required, and virtually nothing where it's desperately needed!!

I'm talking about the amount of block remaining between the centre cylinders, two and three. If regular concentric boring methods are used, there will be a guaranteed in-built failure point, probably just after your first race! ;)

I've built a few of these, and not only do the blocks not crack after a mild overheating, but the head gaskets last too. AND you can run a reasonable amount of CR, too!

If you can stretch to it, a steel crank is worth it's weight in, er... steel. ;)

My Autograss blokie runs a 1380 with 11:1 CR, a 310 deg (non-scatter) cam, and about the best head a grand will get you, and he has a 112bhp at the wheels. AND it stays together!!

Good luck all.

One alternative to using a steel crank is to freeze a standard one......its much cheaper and 80% as good.

Just going to hauls this thread back on liine a bit
We're going to be back out in Classic FF again for 2001. (Having tried flying at Combe and deciding I preferred land based sport :rotate: )Only did 5 meetings this season so never realy got in the groove.
I've sold the Crossle 16F I had in the garage for the last 18 months for restoration, so next year I can concentrate on the Jamun.
Also got a test lined up for a FF2000 and I would like to aquire a Sports 2000 but they're a bit pricey.
Don't know what the calender will be like for 2001, I hope we will get to do most of the BARC Classic package again if they are running it, just love watching Mr Mallets brigade going three abreast through the hairpins.

Well, Im hoping to race both of the cars in the coming year.
The torana GTR XU1 in probbaly 4- 6 races and I am hoping to take the Prince Skyline out for a run at the Mallala (South Australia) round of the Australian Historic Touring Car Cup.
This car came out of retirement to run in the regularity events at the Sandown Historic races. It hasnt been raced for 5 yeras and despite a few minor problems went well.
I was only 3 seconds off the pace from 5 years ago using 1000 rpm less through the gears and on old battery cases for tyres (6 yo Yokohama A008) and soggy shocks.
All in all I was very happy, especially when my wife drove the car on the track for the first time also and improved her times by 20 seconds from Friday private prac to sunday regiularity event. If she keeps that up she'll be quicker than me in my own car.
hells bells can't have that happen.
ahve a happy Xmas to one and all

Torana, will you be running at the Phillip Island historic meeting in February? I received an entry form the other day in the post but unfortunately i won't be able to go. My Dad however, will be in Canberra in February, so I've convinced him to drive down to the island for the weekend and take heaps of photos for me. What can he expect in terms of a Group N entry and do you think the Ferrari F1 car will do any laps?

Im hoping to run if i get my liscence back from CAMS
they hevent even sent them out as yet.
We are hoping to get entries at about the same as last year
for the Australian Historic touring Car Cup last year we had 84 entries.
The racing was grouped into over and under 3 ltr no matter whether the cars were Na, Nb or Nc
It turned out really well and should be the same this time around.

I havent looked at car since Sandown Historic and will have to start next week. I need to freshen up the engine after 3 years 10 race meetings and 2 heavy crashes it might be the right thing to do.
