The term "definitive source" and detailed race information (chassis numbers, customers, engine preparers, race records, and so forth) on sports-racing cars from the USRRC & Can-Am days simply seem to exist in separate universes. There is a bit on the M6A and M6B cars in the Nye McLaren book plus bits here and there, but unless I missed it I am unaware of something remotely close to what you are searching for, or at least available to "the public".

Whenever I attended a race in Those Days, I made it a point to poke my head into the cockpit and record chassis numbers and anything else of that nature I could find, particularly as to who did the engine prep or whatever. I have not seen the material for the USRRC and Can-Am cars for years upon years. It was in several notebooks which are something akin to the Bermuda Triangle for boxes that go missing during moves.
I do not recall many others doing what I did. Not many really cared at the time. Only later when the uptick in the market for such cars began to make its climb skyward did such numerology become an item of serious interest to a few with their eye$ on the benefit$ of having such information. There were a few others like me and we kept in touch back (by snail mail) in those days, but most are in the same boat I am -- those notebooks don't seem to exist anymore.
Every once in awhile something surfaces such as the customer list from Elva for whoever ordered a series-produced McLaren. One could probably piece together an idea of what was what and who was whom with some patience, but other than that you to keep turning over the rocks and continue to keep asking since someday....
