Dial Up Users

We know that with the introduction of avatars and a couple of other things in the upgrade, dial up users may find this slows down their access.

There is a section in the FAQ (http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/faq.php?faq=upgrade_issues_faq#faq_upgrade_issues_slow) specifically for dial up users with instructions on how to speed up your access by filtering out certain options.

Hope this is of help!

I'm still a DUNce and, to be fair, it doesn't seem to be much different than before, although I suppose it may slow down when all those avatars start flying around.

Won't this only slow them down for the first log on, after that will the avatars and everything else be in the users cache?

You're probably right, I wouldn't know. Thinking about it, maybe it seems quite fast because a lot of people haven't realised that the site is back on line yet. It does seem quite quiet in here! :) I'm amusing myself exploring the new layout and various options.

With the Avatar sizes being limited it's unlikely that they'll add a huge overhead to DUN users. Most of the Avatars will be under 3K and with a default thread layout of 15 posts that's 45K of extra information (assuming all 15 posts have different Avatars)

If 15 posts per page is too slow then users have the ability to set the number of posts to as low as 5 per page. (Or as many as 40 if they're feeling brave!)

I'm on dial up and see no difference iother than a bit of "hanging" earlier in the day. That's gone now.

Well it's more precautionary than anything else. Hopefully no-one will have a problem, but we'd prefer to be prepared with instructions on how to combat it than say nothing and someone does have a problem :)

I'm having no problems at the moment - in fact, I'd say it's faster than the old software, possibly because traffic levels are low; round about dinnertime on Monday things may be different....

I'm rather disappointed that,in the FAQ, under 'If you are using Internet Explorer' it doesn't say 'use a faster browser'! ;)

Sorry MagnetON, I didn't understand how do do it.

Anyway I managed to change it to under 100 pixels but the file wasn't correct.
