Running Slow

We're running a little slow at the moment and will be for the next 15 minutes and you may be unable to access the site - this is because we're running some backup processes.

I am finding the forum to be slow compared with last week. It seems to take ages to find pages but they load as normal once the searching has finished.
Last night at about 9-10pm it came to a stand still and nothing would load.
Not too bad at the moment but things may be quite due to people being in church.

Falce, there is a section in the FAQ for people who are finding the system slow. Can you please take a look and come back to us if you still have issues after reading it.

There was an outage last nite which would have probably started slowing the system down from about 21:30 so that may be what you experienced.

OK checked all that and it is OK. I am running 1mb broadband and have a good connection. It seems to be IE searching for the pages that is the problem. It seems to be blowing hot and cold at the moment (sometimes it finds them quickly, sometimes it doesn't) Once the page starts to load there is no problem. When I use Mozilla there doesn't seem to be a problem as it seems to load in a different way but I didn't want to go down the road of using two different browsers.
I will see how it goes over the next few days

I seem to remember you reporting this problem on the old site as well after the changeover? Did it resolve itself then? I wonder if there is something in your system that is flushing the cache for some reason?

I think a lot of us were reporting this problem back then and I seem to remember you adding a bit more RAM (I think)to your server.
Mozilla is fine but IE is soooooo sloooooooow. With IE when I click the link on my browser, my home page loads immediately, then everything else is slow looking for pages. I have my search settings set to automatic updates as in you FAQ instructions, is this correct?

Yes it is. This is very strange. What version of IE are you using?

I'm on dial up IE6 and whilst sometimes it hangs if I link through from an e-mail notification, I find it as quick, if not quicker than the old site.

IE 6.0.2800
Like I said, it was fine last week and other forums that I won't name still work fine, is it only me with this problem?
Edited to say..just set my refresh settings to every vist to the page and that makes it find the page immediately and just takes about half a second to load, so maybe that is the answer.

Might be worth removing all cached pages and also reducing the size of your browsers cache in the settings?

Ok...im using Dial up and IE 6 and the speed is just terrible... any tweaks in the settings i could use... ive already done the stuff suggested in the FAQ

Until now we've recommended automatic because that seems to work best for most people. I'm surprised that the refresh each time works, but if it does, then grand!

RF, can you try this too and see if it works for you? It may be that the different table structure in the new version responds better to the "every visit" refresh.

If it works for both of you, I'll put an update in the FAQ.

That's not actualy working now and I have gone back to automatic update.
It's still slow but i will try other things and let you know how it works

why, what does that do?

If the amount of disk space set aside for the browsers cache is too big it can really slow things down as you approach filling that space up completely. If things are loading quicker by loading the page fresh each time (ie not loading from the cache) then it's worth 5 minutes of your time to see if emptying the thing will help. Perhaps?
