Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 12:14 I found this :- http://www.riogp.com.br/projeto1.asp
its Rio's cut down of its track to make room for the Pan american games which the city is hosting ... now at first it looks like it has been cut in half, with the usual Tilke hairpin at Sul. Also with roads around the stadiums and such ...... but on closer inspection I think it seems after the games the track will run around the stadiums ..... although I'm not 100% on that, anyway what do you all think ??? Is it an attempt to take the Brazilian GP away from Sao Paulo AFTER the Pan American games have been and gone ???
Lustigson 18 Apr 2005, 13:16 That looks like a pretty OK track to me.
Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 13:26 well I was expecting worse, feels a little like bahrain, although that could be just me.
the_royksopp 18 Apr 2005, 15:11 Is it an attempt to take the Brazilian GP away from Sao Paulo AFTER the Pan American games have been and gone ???
I dont think so. The track would be way too short.
Lustigson 18 Apr 2005, 16:15 Looking at the track a second time: it appears to be counter-clockwise... which makes it even better. However, are the sections on the right no longer part of the track? Those two fast left-handers? That makes the story a bit different.
pirenzo 18 Apr 2005, 16:25 So the old track will not be restored after this Pan American thingy?
Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 16:58 I dont think so. The track would be way too short.
my understanding that the track will be about 3.1 miles which is plently long enough,
Lustigson, yer it will be Anti clockwise, The part on the left as we look at is more or less half of the circuit we have today(the darker grey circuit), I presume this will be used During the Pan-am games. The lighter grey track I presume would be for transport for the games during them (like Olympic Bolavuade (sp?)). But looking in the bottom right under the writing "masterplan" there is a circuit with both, so I would presume that AFTER the games that will be made thus creating the 3.1 Miles.
P, No the original track will not be in use after the games.
pirenzo 18 Apr 2005, 17:13 wait, the light grey isn't the old track is it? stupid me...
I was hoping that the track wouldn't be cut short permanently to the dark grey bit...
Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 17:27 well I think its only while the Panam Games are there or thats what I preusme but I could be wrong.
the_royksopp 18 Apr 2005, 17:49 Youre wrong there, Wooshy, the track is 3.1 miles now, and its gonna be about half the size.
Is top class racing over at Rio?
MARCH 1, 2005: Top class racing looks to be all-but dead at Rio's Jacarepaguá circuit, with news that half of it is to be torn up to make way for an athletics village.
Rio's Mayor, Cesar Maia, has approved plans to create a complec for the 2007 Pan-American Games, which the city is hosting. The circuit will be reduced from its current 3.08-mile layout to just 1.67 miles, with a watersports park and indoor sports arena built on the northern portion of the track.
Also disappearing will be the 'roval' course, which has remained dormant since the last Champ Car visit in 2000. The circuit is set to close for the whole of 2006 while the alterations take place.
Motorsports fans have been battling the plans for several years but appear to have lost their battle. Only national-level racing will be possible at the shortened circuit, which will not be long enough to qualify for an international licence.
No MotoGP race
MotoGP bosses have announced that they will not return to the track in 2005 as a result. Rio's slot on the calendar will instead be taken by the Istanbul Otodrom in Turkey.
The new facility will be known as the Rio Speedway Sports Complex, with a velodrome for cycling, indoor arena for gymnastics and basketball, together with the National Aquatics Centre.
The Rio Sports Plaza Association, which will provide full financing for the construction, won a public bid to reconstruct Jacarepaguá and has been granted to right to utilize the Sports Complex for 50 years. Construction on the $150 million project is expected to begin next April.
Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 17:51 no it will only be half while the pan-am games are on (see heavy grey track) then my understanding is it will use both Light grey and heavy grey.
Lustigson 18 Apr 2005, 17:52 If you look at it this way, it's actually pretty good, I think.
http://img108.echo.cx/img108/6876/rio1dr.th.gif (http://img108.echo.cx/my.php?image=rio1dr.gif)
Mike_Wooshy 18 Apr 2005, 17:55 that would be the track that I understand to be the track used after the pan am games.
Lustigson 18 Apr 2005, 18:08 Dudes, it's busy all of a sudden. :)
the_royksopp 18 Apr 2005, 19:28 Well, i seem to remember to have heard, that the old Jacarepaguá will be gone forever, but i might be wrong. Though, as it wont be long enough to be granted an international license, it's for sure not gonna be bidding for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Lustigson 19 Apr 2005, 09:38 Hey, TR! You might be right about the 'original' track disappearing. However, if you study the map closely, you see that the right-most part of the circuit has run-off. It could be that those roads will be used for the fair/exibition/whatever, but will be available for racing afterwards.
the_royksopp 19 Apr 2005, 15:26 According to Etracks, it'll look like this,
http://www.etracksonline.co.uk/News/RioChopped.jpg
:).
Lustigson 19 Apr 2005, 16:06 Hmm... that doesn't look too good, now, does it. They chopped off half the track. :\
Flaming_Wuzzle 19 Apr 2005, 16:30 I think the layout TR posted will be for before and during the Pan-Am games (if there's any racing then) then will switch to the layout L and Mike posted afterward.
Lustigson 19 Apr 2005, 16:40 Now that I look at TR's picture again, I don't think this is accurate. Check out the first corner!
Mike_Wooshy 19 Apr 2005, 17:07 TR your map is acctuley before the idea tilke was doing this, now that tilke has been involved we seem to a proposal to have the track kept at its lengh, its quiet ironic that tilke destroyed hockenhiem but saved Rio .... kinda :s
the_royksopp 19 Apr 2005, 17:31 I think the layout TR posted will be for before and during the Pan-Am games (if there's any racing then) then will switch to the layout L and Mike posted afterward.
Might be so, yes.
(Hope so :))
the_royksopp 19 Apr 2005, 17:32 But is Tilke actually involved?
Lustigson 19 Apr 2005, 17:33 Good question, TR. I didn't see any references to Rio on the Tilke site.
Mike_Wooshy 19 Apr 2005, 17:34 the tilke site is never updated ..... well i didnt think it was when i looked around it.
Fish_Flake 22 Apr 2005, 04:37 If that diagram is meant to show the long-term plans for Rio, I'd say that there's a lot of promise there. I hope everything pans out like that.
Schummy 28 Apr 2005, 23:01 As I understand the web site www.riogp.com.br there are two layouts: the Permanent circuit, with 3.1 kms (very short but ok for non-F1 events) and the Grand-Prix circuit, with 4.8 kms have a normal F1 length. So I assume the circuit integrity will be preserved (in size).
I think they will use the GP circuit for some major events (maybe it's wishful thinking). I'm not particularly fond of the current Interlagos (I liked the looong old one!) so I would not care if they change GP Brasil to Rio ;)
I think the larger layout is actually not bad at all (IMHO), I like the two long radius coners. I see it with a good flow, particularly if they choose using the curvone at the end of the nice long straight.
I would be tempted to say this new layout (essentially redoing the first half of the lap) is better than the older... and this is a statement that I rarely have done in any circuit before! :)
Rominger 16 Jun 2005, 17:58 Hello folks,
I found this thread about the Rio race track, and as local fan, let me update on this.
The drivers here are very, very upset with these changes. The reason behind this are this:
1 - If you look closely at the RioGP picture, Post 2007, there is a lot of buildings and a hotel at the top of the picture (a triangle). This area, right now, is under a serious
real state pressure, with lots of condos being build around the area. The race track is being abandoned by the city hall, who claims that area is "counter productive". Claiming 'budget restraints', the city hall cancelled its part of the sponsorship for RioGP this year at the last moment, and, as result, the event was canceled.
2 - The company behind the works of the race track, Rio Sport Plaza, simply doesn´t exist so far. The company is a fantasy name for a group of contractors who didn´t even legalize its situation. So, right now, 2 years before the begining of the PanAm Games, the contract is waiting to be signed.
3 - The spokesman for Rio Sport Plaza, said it was OK to use the bigger track, "If you pay for the rent of that area", since, of course, there is going to be buildings at it which won´t be in use during the auto racing events. Looking at Interlagos story (for those who don´t know, the city hall claimed to maintain the original 7,8km race track, and as it turned out, it never delivered the promise), this is history repeating itself, so we would never have a chance to see any international event here.
4 - They are planning to build a soccer stadium in a city which don´t take full advantage even from its main stadium (Maracana) and with an Olympic stadium being built for 2007, would have already 3 huge stadiums for only 4 big soccer clubs in Rio, which don´t play all the same day at the brazilian championship.
I could go on, and on, but I guess you guys got the picture. Today, June 16th, right now, there is a car rally at downtown Rio to protest against the murder of Jacarepagua. We do not want to have the same fate as Zeltweg. The Brazilian Automobile Federation is also against it and will go to legal court to stop this work.
Our blog is http://sosautodromorj.blog.aol.com.br, it is in portuguese, but I am sure to help with any questions.
If you know anyone from the media to spread this message, we would be very glad with all the help we could get.
Baritone2400 16 Jun 2005, 22:20 WOW! good luck brasil, ive loved thic circuit since the cart days up till now with motogp. such a good circiut what a bad way to "improve"!! what about the race fans???
