My Tracks Challenge #4... Darnoc

I'm bored ;)!!!...

OK, here's the deal, and PLEASE follow this carefully...

The small town of Darnoc was the one of the first ports in Australia's (*cough* LIE *cough*), and has very steadily grown. However, due to the huge new ports being built on the Eastern Coast, Darnoc's port is not needed, and thus was up for sale. Now, Mr. Darnoc (a distant relative from one of the first white people in Australia (*cough* LIE *cough*)) has bought the land and wishes to create a short circuit...

All of the maroon land is the old port, and you can do what you wish with it, EXCEPT, you cannot build on the water, however, you can dig down and create more water...

All the yellow are the borders for the locals farms/residences in Darnoc. You can 'buy' these for the number of credits that they are worth. You have a maximum of 25 credits. However, of course, you don't have to do this. Those in an Aqua colour, you cannot buy for various reasons...

The are no restrictions on the circuit, you are the designer, and you can do what you wish, the only must is that the pits must be at least 500m long...

EDIT: ohh yea, umm, access to all houses much be maintained somehow, and you cannot get too close to the freeways...

As someone once said... "Go forth and procreate"... Good luck all ;)...

...also (see how bloody forgetful I am :(), you can use existing roads, as this circuit doesn't HAVE to be a premanent circuit, however, it is prefered...

yep yep... thats the 'basic' layout that I thought everyone would do ;)...

Good to see you've used some of the existing roads, both for the circuit and access to the circuit, and also you didn't use any homes, which is a good thing in a way...

My track (which I'll post much later) will be more destructive ;)...

Keep'em coming aye???...

Interesting challenge. I might have a go later this week. Busy, busy, busy. ;)

After an initial survey of the site my engineers could come up with no evidence of any underground tunnels... They were also of the opinion that any new tunnels created would be at serious risk of flooding. So as a designer I was pretty much lost!

Obviously this would not be a good thing... unless we could arrange F1 submarine races. Nuclear powered subs would be banned for obvious reasons! (one of which being a certain boycotting by a group thought to be led by ASCIIman :P)

Thus I set my engineers the task of taking to the SKY! Strict rules imposed by the government to save the breeding grounds of the underwater "Hare Slug" denied us any possibility of planting any pylons into the ocean. Floating buoys were also ruled out due to bad weather and strong sea currents.

Thus we liaised with some engineers at the Wembley stadium and were able to perfect a construction technique that allows you to build a great BIG arch and lay it almost on its side.... On top this arch we then laid a road and allowed us to make a nice oval racing circuit by doing the same at the opposite end as well. Because of this layout the pits for the oval is curved and cuts underneath the road circuit. The parts of the track which are in the air are denoted by the thinner white line.

The high-speed road circuit uses part of the oval and will "fly" out to sea and uses the pits which runs down the main straight. (yeah its boring I know) but the aussies just LOVE it :)

The arches are quite steeply banked and this allows quite superb viewing from the central pier in the infield.

Parking is provided and access to the main site is left as is. Being an ex-port the roads are suitably wide enough. The shorter pier is still in use and a ferry service will run on race weekend. Race teams can also charter a car ferry to get there equipment to the circuit.

Both tracks run clockwise.

Dudes, I got started on my version of the challenge last night. I must say it looks pretty good for my first track in at least ten weeks. I'll post something tonight.

Here is my go. I appear to be the first who had to buy property. I bought two a 2 credits each for a total of four. It is mostly a street circuit, with a couple of permanent pieces (including the piece of track where I bought property). I built a long track, which if deemed too long, can be replaced by the track that includes the red line. If the short circuit must be used, it has two variants. It can along the water, or it can wrap around the reflecting pool (or lake, whichever), much like the long track would.

The reflecting pool was made by building a creek from the water. It is stated that I am not allowed to build on the water, but the water is not touched at all. I built over the water, and since the creek is narrow enough that the bridge over it can support itself without any pillars in the water. Also, I placed three fountains in the reflecting pool, which shoot off water 24/7, even during a race. The reflecting pool is to give the locals and tourists something to visit all year round, and with the building of restaurants and shops, the port can be a year round tourist attraction and money maker for the twon of Darnoc.

OK, here's my go at the challenge. I'm very happy with it. I took some time to do the graphics, too. :)

i dont like the snail in that position ... and i would loosen-up T5 (if u count the kink as T3) ... the rest is genious thou !

Lustigson
4 May 2005, 12:39
I really like turn 1, I must say. However, I would have like to lengthen the main straight, but there's not enough room for that.

The good thing about T5 is that cars take it slower, now, and can go trough it closer towards the car in front of them without being bothered by dirty air. That way they can slipstream across the straight and out-break for T6.

Well, you always tend to have at least a couple of 90-degree'ish corners, you like to use the snail, and your esses are also very distinctly lustig'ish. Just the overall composion of the track, makes it clear, that it's a Lustig :D.

pirenzo
4 May 2005, 17:09
Yup, the hairpin-esses combo and the 'snail' are a dead give-away.
One thing I would do is make turn 6 much, much smoother, because at the moment you've not got a long enough straight to facilitate passing into that hairpin. Your s/f straight is only about 550-600m.

Hmm... that's a nice thought, CG. Why don't you make a new thread about that and try to include as many names as you can come up with. Then all of us post three names -- best designer, second-best, third-best -- and we can't vote ourselves. Afterwards someone adds up all the votes and voilą! :)

the_royksopp
4 May 2005, 19:52
Or make a poll? :).

NEway, it shouldnt be legal to vote for yourself :). Not that i would ;). Or :p.

And yea, CG, your designs have got a distict signature of CG to them too :).

I guess we're 'the old guard', the four of us. Jeez, i remember when we were the new guns :D.

Oh, thats way to many smilies in there :rotate:.

OK, here are my comments about each of the tracks so far...

P, (I already commented)... PLUS, looking at all the tracks so far, you actually are the only one who followed the rules quite well, you really did make a short circuit...

Cougar... LOL... you end your outrageous ideas ;)... well, honestly (barring the fact that you (again) did something no one else would you do), its a pretty good track. You used existing roads, a nice mix of corners and yea... Good idea, but that track (one such a site) would never be designed though aye ;)...

mandretti... Well. This is probably the best circuit which optimises existing roads, and not a lot of effort, time and money is really needed for it... Good idea for the water fountain thingy, really gives a usually dull old port and real spark (not that a racing circuit doesnt)... The only thing that I would try and change would proabably be the transitions from the short-ish circuit to the roads, its too typical and basic... you could easily spruse it up a bit there mate...

Lust... as TR said, typical Lust circuit. The circuit itself, I like, great, however, I don't like how you didn't really use up as much of the existing roads as you could, and it seems that you didn't really consider the surroundings when making the track... You gave the track a real permanent track feel, whereas you could've made it more street-circuit-ie like Montreal for example, it has a great feel to it... But honestly, best track so far probably... Dont take this bad, Im just a hard guy to please :)...

I don't want to post mine up yet btw... however, it will come sooner rather then later...

Thanks for the compliments, Freak. Thanks for the criticism, too... however, I hadn't realised that designing a semi-permanent track was part of the challenged. Thinking of that, though: I think about a third of my design still uses the existing roads.

But, I've taken all criticism to hart and made a few changes to my design. First of all, I've made the start-finish straight longer -- it's about 800 m now, which should be enough. I've also loosened up T6 to further improve overtaking in the hairpin. Final change is the last two kinks: T13 is almost 90 degrees, now, while T14 is hardly a kink.

I think its about time that I posted my track... A lot less people responded to this then I thought?!?!?!... Ohh well...

I bought I think (cant be bothered checking) 24 points of land... I dont know why, but I've never been one to say no to an offer ;)...

I used quite a bit (I think) of the existing roads... There are two variants, short and GP...

GP circuit uses some of the old road which was left over after buying the land, and ends of with twisty section to join back onto the short circuit...

The circuit then continues with the existing roads, and I added a chicane near the water on the right, and a tricky hairpin-ish section on the top right...

There is obviously parking, and I've also added a road on the northern part of the track to join the two roads up...

I'm happy with this, I honestly didn't have to buy so much land, but yea... Comments/Opinions welcome...

Nice, not sure about the bit round the back of the paddock (the fast 90 left and slow 90 right).
I like the funny appendix shaped couple of corners up in the top right, and the esses at turns 4, 5 and 6, quite Road Atlanta like (without the gradient though I suspect ;))
