from AutoRacing1.com ...

Fans call for Sid Watkins Knighthood A group of fans have got together to campaign and lobby for a Knighthood for Professor Sid Watkins the former FIA medical delegate in recognition of his services to motorsport.

The first stage is an online petition which has already been signed by many hundred fans and F1 employees including 1996 world champion Damon Hill, multiple race winner Johnny Herbert, Prodrive boss David Richards, world championship winning engineer Pat Symonds, ex F1 driver Perry McCarthy and McLaren Managing Director Martin Whitmarsh. Stage 2 will involve political lobbying.

Campaign coordinator Chris Thompson is keen that people interested should visit www.sidwatkins.co.uk and the petition will be presented to the Culture Secretary Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP at a later date.

Professor Sir I think... :bleh:

The more observant amongst you all may have realised this isn't the first thread we've seen linking to this particular petition. We ended up closing and;/or pulling the others for a number of reasons which I don't intend to go into here.

Those who follow F1 closely will know a great deal about Sid Watkin's contribution to the sport, and will all agree that this would be a thoroughly deserved honour.

However I tend to think that internet petitions are little more than a useless scam and that this one will have absolutely no influence on any decision.

In fact a thread like this one on a forum like 10Tenths where members can post their tributes to Professor Watkins with the not unlikely hope that someone who does have some influence will read them is, I think, a far better way to go.

I'm sure someone can furnish us with the details, but I'm sure I've read that you can now nominate people for Honours...
