Just bought an ex rallycross shell

Hi all.

I've just bought a Rallycross shell. It was used by Will Gollop in his 93 European title challenge and origionally used T-16 engine and running gear.

Now not having one of those engines, or the budget to purchase one I'm looking for other options for engine and drivetrain...
Must be light, reliable (not peugeot then :P ) , and be Rwd.

The Ford Duratec engine seems good at 85kgs?!? any others?

Then perhaps 2wd saphire cosworth drivetrain. Thats the only thing I can think of for driving the rear wheels

has anyone got any thoughts?

what capacity are you looking at? turbocharged or not?
Are you looking at road car engines or race engines?
is it to be only RWD??
does the car have any transmission with it?

what are you going to use it for?

what cc class will you run it in?

turbo?

if you want light, forget the cos running gear, the engine is heavy, being based on the lardy old pinto, and none of the gearboxes that bolt to it are light.

the peugoet m16 engine is actually quite good and nice and light

assuming your looking for 2000 non turbo, the vauxhall c20xe lump has a lot to offer (pre ecotec red top 16v) although its heavier than the mi16, you wont get much lighter than the duratec, but they aren't cheap neither are bell housings to adapt them to rwd gearboxes.

if you want about 200 bhp, why not the entire running gear from a honda S2000, you probably pick up the whole lot for the price of a duratec and bellhousing.

No idea on the drivetrain, but GTi6 / GTi180 engines are pretty strong and tunable. Not much heavier than the Mi16, either. Not too many knocking around second-hand, tho - at least not in a tuned state.

GTi6 is reliable apart from a weakness with the cambelt from factory. I've seen a few 205 GTi6s, and a 309 GTi6 on t/bs, and they certainly weren't slow.

Otherwise XE.

When I spoke to Twowheelterror a little while back the plan was to turbo a duratec engine as it's lighter than the old cosworth yb then use a cossie drivetrain and rear diff

Parts would be easily available - both race and standard partsAnything jap or german tends to get expensive on parts.

Peugeot engines are ok, but linking that to a RWD system could be a pain, turbo modifications seem to be a bit thin on the ground but are also expensive and suffer from lack of development.

There have been M16 rwd conversions done in the past. Both them & the 8 Valve XU engine were popular with the Hot Rod guys and both have the same bellhousing pattern & sump. Mass did a lot of those so they may still be able to supply the bits. They used the usual Ford gearboxes.

The car is effectively a spaceframe now. At least that is how the scrutineers will see it. Putting it in the 'anything goes it just depends on your budget class' :D

As it wasn't going to be used on the loose stuff RWD is currently the only consideration.

Mi16 engine is a good engine, but the duratec is similar and better designed so if I was sticking with the 2 litre none turbo thats the direction I'd head. 203 bhp just by fitting TBs to the duratec. The limitations on both are that once you get past 220brake roughtly you start having to spend a lot of money on them to get any more power.

I know the shell weights about 250kgs, Could I get a Cossie engine and RWD drive train in there and keep the weight around 700kgs? Other than the weight it seems a good option to me, being relatively simply to tune, easy to find parts, tough, and turbo'd straight out the box. Plenty of gearbox options too.

Ha this is the problem with starting with a blank sheet. So many options it makes my head hurt.

If budget is tight, how about a Rover O series unit from a Montego Turbo, with Sherpa bellhousing/box to get RWD. 150 hp standard, 250 relatively cheap and simple. Or variation on a theme, use the T16, 300 not too difficult.
