I have a Hewland gearbox that came with a formula B basket case. It is a MK type gearbox with "H5-216" stamped on the nameplate on the end of the box (end cover) and stamped on the bearing carrier. It has a VW maincase Does the "H5" indicate it is a MK 5 gearbox?
Thanks :)

Yes,
It does indicate a MK 5 Hewland .
You will need to check that over the years strange things have not happened inside .
The first give away is check the diameter of the layshaft , i.e. the bottom of the two shafts , if it is still MK 5 spec. this will be 1.125'' diameter , the second is to have a look at the hubs that take the clutch [ dog ] rings , if MK 5 these will intermesh via 3 long dog type extensions , this is straight MK5 , if not DO NOT PANIC , it may have been changed to Hewland later type over the years which are still available off the shelf , this would / may have been done if the CWP was upgraded to later Hewland spec rather than VW early spec.
Mk5 ratios etc. all still available .
