allenbrown 28 Dec 2005, 10:48 Welcome Mathew!
Chris Townsend 28 Dec 2005, 11:23 Mathew, Hi. Consigned to Ralt American late 1982 [no date in sales record
but probably early November.] Original tub 82/8 or 82/5. Gearbox FT1561
Fuel cell Marston JM39256.
Might T.Carmichael be Dan Carmichael? 7th with an RT4 in 1984 SCCA run-offs
Can't find any pro results for a Carmichael in 1983 or in 84 WCAR, which suggests
SCCA history
Afraid don't have Atlantic history from 1985 onwards anything like complete yet, but would guess used in ECAR and SCCA
Peter Gates uses a March 81A throughout 1986 so I guess he bought it at the end of the season.
Looks as though this might be a lightly raced car and its ECAR appearances would be the high point.

Ol'_Motorhead 28 Dec 2005, 17:16 It's a long shot but I think a fellow racer may have run that event in '86 with in a Player's Challenge Camero in a support race. He may have the entry, program, etc. I'll check with him and let you know. Here's a link that shows the results. HTH.

Season's greetings to all. :rotate:
Cheers.
Ol'_Motorhead 28 Dec 2005, 18:49 Followup to my last post, the chap I had in mind didn't run that event. :(
However I see your man did finish the race, albeit well down the field but if nothing else it confirms the car was there. :)
Formula Car magazine (USA) likely covered that event well. You might try searching out the July or August issue to see what they may have. I have a partial collection of that mag but none from that year.
Cheers.
Thanks all for feed back, can any help with driving history of Tom Skaff or help with sponsor colour scheme of vehicle from 86 GP.
Neptune 31 Dec 2005, 03:47 Mathew,
With almost complete certainty, your T. Carmichael is actually Dan Carmichael, of Bexley, part of the metropolitan Columbus, Ohio. Dan was quite a skilled racer, only retiring from active competition within the last 10 years. He is legendary in this area as a driver of Sunbeam Alpines and Tigers back in the 60's and later with formula cars, mostly SCCA FB and FAtl. He won his last SCCA national championship at around age 75 in the late 90s, in I believe a Ralt RT 40 or 41.
I think Dan was a fighter pilot in the Korean war and the skills of flying served him well in race cars.
I guess the reason I am fairly certain of this is that you included the SCCA logbook/ rollbar number, 29-152. For those not familiar with this numberiing system, the first part of the number is the SCCA region where the car was registered and the 2nd part is the consecutive number assigned by that region. And region #29 is Ohio Valley Region, of which I was a member for over 25 years and it is based here in Columbus.
I would not be surprised if Dan didn't have some photos of the car when he was running it.
Roger
Charles Warner 3 Jan 2006, 01:02 If Dan drove the car it should show some modifications relative driver size. I believe Dan is about 6'5" or so. I believe he usually stretched the tubs about 4 inches.
Thanks Roger & Charles, have searched for contact of Dan although not successful can any one advise?Dan Carmichael Jr, Naval aviator ace flew in WW2.
Mathew,
I'll contact him for you if you wish. I bought some tools and weber jets from him when he retired from racing and he should be in the local phone book. I've already checked to see if he was in the last OVR member directory, but he must have dropped out after he quit racing. Charlie is right, he is pretty tall, but not so sure he is so tall he would have to stretch the tub to fit.
Roger
Roger, can you also enquire to when Dan sold ralt to Tom Skaff. Spoke to R.P Gates who purchased vehicle from Skaff damaged in 1987. I think late 85 early86 as log book does not show pass of ownership to Skaff although there is entries in log book.
Matt
Dear Roger...
My name is andrew mccarthy and i have purchased Matt's Ralt..!!
Hence i am trying to complete the task of building up a thorough record of the car...particularly the color scheme / decals ( in particular ) of this car when it ran ( as owned by Dan C ..but driven by Tom Skaff ) in the 1986 Canadian Grand OPrix..
Could i restart after 1 year the discussion / info flow
kind regards

There are no photos of that car in On Track, the leading N.American magazine at the time. I guess Skaff was too far back down the field. I'd suggest that you try a photographer like Mark Windecker, who went to a lot of Atlantic and FSV meetings around that time. [He's readily traceable on the web, where he keeps an image archive - though that doesn't include Montreal 86 at present]
If he hasn't got any pics he at least might have contacts with other photographers who were there
Chris
Dear Chris,
thankyou for your reply..much appreciated..i shall try and contaxt him..
thankyou

mwphoto 15 Jan 2007, 17:19 Chris-Thanks for the mention.
Andrew-Thanks for the e-mail.
Wish I could help, but wasn't at Montreal so have no pictures or any info on the car in question.
Mark Windecker
Dear Mark..
thanks for your reply ...i guess i'll have to paint the thing dayglo puce...
cheers

One other thought is that Dan Carmichael regularly ran at the June Sprints at Elkhart Lake, and those are very well documented. [I'll remember the name of the photographer I'm thinking of just after sending this message...) You should be able to find something there. Personally, I think putting the car in the colours of a man who ran competitively for the best part of forty years, and won just about anything the SCCA had to offer, would be an appropriate tribute.

Shock Guy 16 Jan 2007, 14:41 Hello folks,
I am new to the forum and looking for some chassis validation. I am a young Race Engineer and looking to validatae a car we may take into our stable.
I need to confirm chassis #, gearbox #, Bahner Tub #. Would any one happen to have any records on chassis 86-605. It has a Bahner Tub 4-024-87
Before I purchase this I was looking for gear box # and history.
Please feel free to call or write back ASAP. Thank you for your time.
Angelo
Chris Townsend 16 Jan 2007, 18:43 Shock Guy
Does the car have either a gearbox on it with a readable number or can you get at the fuel cell. If it's a real RT4 it may have the wrong plate on it
605 was sold to Intersport as RT30 17 Jan 86 so an F3.
Such is not uncommon and it may not invalidate the history of this car, you just have to look a little deeper.
There is also the possibility that this was the Christopher Smith "RT4" from 1987, which was built on a European RT3.
Good luck
Chris
PS John this and the preceding post probably need moving to RT4 in chassis histories
Shock Guy 17 Jan 2007, 00:10 Chris,
Thanks for the info. Where do I find the RT4 section? - Such a rookie.....
The car is complete, so I cant get to the fuel cell #. There is a Bahner plate with # 4-024-87. The original tub is no where to be found. The scca log book shows 86-605. What should the gear box # be and where can I find it
Dear Chris..thankyou for this information....i will be most interested to get hol do of this contact ( when you remember who it was !?!!! ) ...yes it would be a tribute..
cheers
andrew
John Turner 17 Jan 2007, 10:46 Thanks for the info. Where do I find the RT4 section?
In the Chassis History Archive here:-

I'll move some of these recent posts here at some stage.
Chris Townsend 17 Jan 2007, 12:17 Shock guy
The original gearbox number is not going to be relevant here, because if it was 605 it was fitted with a VW F3 engine originally and would have had a Hewland FT fitted once a BD series engine was put inside it.
If you can find a number stamped on the end plate of the gearbox that might help [if it came from another RT4]
Let's look at the SCCA log book. How far back does it go and what are the first few names/events listed in it?
Chris
Shock Guy 19 Jan 2007, 00:16 Chris,
It will take me a couple of days to get the log books in hand. I will let you know how far back and who.
I understand about the gear box#. Being a converted car from the VW this may not have a number. No wonder why I could not find it.
Thanks for your help.
