Goodwood Whitsun trophy 1964 /Pandora

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but the autosport one was very usefull in helping me research some of the history of my car - lets see if anyone here can help where others have drawn a blank on my current problem......

I own a '60s 1100cc sports racer called Pandora which had its first race at Goodwoods Whisun trophy on 18/5/64. The car raced as number 15, and was driven by a Ray Jackson. The car was owned by Roger Phillips, Michael Homer and Anthony Cowell. It looks very much like a Lotus 23 with a 'shark-nose' front (I'd attach a pic, but can't work it out!)

I have a few photos of the car from this period, but none showing the rear end of the body..... and here's where I need help-

I'm planning to recreate the original body (it was replaced with a quasi Can-Am style one in the early '70s) and have got enough photos to get on with the front, but none of the rear - can anyone here help? was anyone at the meeting with a camera........ I know, it's a long shot!

Does anyone have a contact for the author Robert Baxter in Chichester? I tried to contact him through C&SC following a feature they did a couple of months back, but to no avail.

Many thanks in advance

Alastair Brown

"author Robert Baxter in Chichester"
Do you mean Robert Barker who wrote the Record of Motor Racing at Goodwood?
If so, send me a PM with your e mail address and I'll pass it on

Real purdy looking car, see why you want to recreate it.

I remember seeing the car for sale on Autosport (or Classic&Sportscars), and probably one of them also published a small story about the car, but I'm not really able to track down easily the issue, the only way'd be go through them all, starting from the 90s....

Hi Fausto,

I have a copy of the article from Autosport - it was an article by Marcus Pye on behalf of Roger Phillips, one of the original owners when he was trying to track it down- it was through this article that I was able to establish the cars early history and get in touch with some of the early owners/drivers.

It was this article that I tracked down through the Autosport forum.

to illustrate what I'm trying to do, here are a couple of shots of work so far on reconstruction the original body.......

From the 1/10th scale model I scale up the co-ordinates as a guide to creating sections every 100mm through body. I'll then cut these from foam and work that into the finished surface to build my mould. (I know, there is a bit more shape to go in behind the front wheel arch!)

Problem is, as this process is quite labour intensive, i don't want to guess at the rear body shape unless I have to. (sods law of course says that the minute I take the plunge and start moulding, someone will come up with the pictures I need...)

thats dedication, and I can see why, very nice looking car.

and so the safety police don't get you I guess you can engineer some safety factors into the structure, like a roll hoop etc.

did it have an A series engine ?

Yup, it ran in the 1100cc class, so a straight forward A series mated to a VW box. At least the engine build shouldn't break the bank (dent it , certainly, but hopfully not break!!!) The original engine was an ex works 997 with a Downton head, but I'm building a fast road 1100 with cooper head etc

It has a roll hoop fitted, but I didn't fit it to the model. I have built a 1/10th scale chassis model as well though, nothing to do with the restoration, I just thought it'd make a nice desk ornament if I took a moulding from the body model....... time I could be better spending on the full size car!
