I think Bridgestone and Ferrari have this won, their tyres look to be the best this year, Michelin have gone too conservative.

Lets see what the race brings...

Michelin have gone too conservative.

After last year, can you blame them?

VilleneuveTracy
1 Jul 2006, 20:31
The gap from Ferrari to Renault seems to be due to more than tires. Rubens outqualified Alonso, JV was only three hundreths slower than Alonso, and Button was within a tenth of Alonso. This versus a driver who had come into the race having won five consecutive poles.

Knowlesy

Yes.

Well I also remember people saying Ferrari would be unstoppable after the European GP, so let's not get carried away.

Michael looks odds on favorite for the win, which is needed for the championship. Massa may have the 2nd best car tomorrow, but he can still find a way to chuck it all away, so it should still be competitve for the podium places. It would be great to see Jacques and BMW get a podium here, they look stong, but Im sure Alonso and Kimi will be up at the sharp end of the grid as well. Great grid though, BMW well up, Scot Speed in 13th. Bad luck for Juan to miss out on the last session.

Massa should be much nearer to Schumacher, not that he'd put up much of a fight. But Alonso should be P1 by the time they get to the end of the straight.:)

Ron Dennis doesn't believe Michelin is playing it conservative at Indy:

The Englishman downplayed suggestions that Michelin has brought ultra-conservative tyres to Indy in the wake of its safety concerns on the banking in 2005.

“Well one would assume that Michelin has come with a degree of caution but I don’t think that’s really the case," he said.

If Michelin decide to play it safe at Indy, it's fully understandable. Their reputation took a big hit last year, something which i doubt even winning the WDC last year managed to put right.

I wouldn't write it in that Ferrari/Bridgestone have the race won... yet. Sure, the car/tyre looks quick, but i also believe that MS's immediate rivals (Alonso and Kimi are both running heavy).

Alonso may be starting 5th, but surely it isn't a concern. I'm pretty sure Alonso would be up to 3rd at the end of the first lap, with Kimi slowly making his way back up.

Hopefully, Ferrari and MS can pull something out of the bag and win, while Alonso at least get his first bit of bad luck perhaps, just to keep the championship a tad closer.

I still believe Michelin has a strong tyre, considering that 7 out of the top 10 cars are running Michelins.

BootsOntheSide
2 Jul 2006, 11:02
Kimi is definitely running heavy, but Alonso and Renault's relative lack of pace is about what was expected, so they may be on similar fuel to Michael. This is a real chance for Michael to pull 4 or 5 points back on Fernando, which would help keep the championship alive.

Marbot
2 Jul 2006, 12:55
A safety car during the race could see things turned back in Renault and Mclaren's favour.

Watch for Fisi at the run down to the first corner after the lights. He could be the spoiler, fuelled light to get to the first corner before the Ferrari's and then hold them up in the twisty bits. How he will hold them up on the straights i have no idea, maybe he'll be quicker in the infield.

ASCII Man
2 Jul 2006, 12:59
Well, if you're faster at the twisty bits, then you're bound to be faster on corner exits and achieve higher straightline speeds, so it would be a good move if Fisi is light on fuel to jump ahead and hold up the others.

Marbot

The Ferrari's seem to be very quick on the straights (for whatever reason ;) ) and that seems to be where most of their time is made up (i could be wrong,i don't know the sector times).Maybe it's not so much down to the tyres afterall. *crosses fingers*

Dani Filth

Nico was sent to the back of the grid for missing a weigh bridge - would this had happened if he had been higher up the grid? ie is it a ten place penalty?

Is this the first time they have had to do this? Has anyone missed a weigh bridge before?

A double-DNF for Renault would be preferable, but, well, I could cope with 3rd and 5th (Alonso 5th).

Well shipmates - I haven't posted here for some time - I can now see why!

The most exciting bit for me and the lad is the chicken on the pit wall in the ITV ad breaks.

Please tell me F1 is worth sticking with - some of my mates are bailing out!

I think we should scrap Indy as one of the most boring venues on F1 calendar. It's a complete waste of time spending all that money shipping the show over (when it could be spent on charity) to a venue with so many empty seats. And please don't say (like JAllen) that its a big venue, the US don't have any problems filling huge stadiums to watch men in cropped trousers play rounders.

Anyone fancy throwing some chairs around?

They should restart the race IMO instead of trundling round under safety car conditions, running through debris.

Not everyone could have restarted (Montoya for example, would have had to sit out as Kimi would have got the T-car) but it would have added some interest.

There needs to be common sense applied.

Why is it being a sourpuss?

Ferrari would still have won easily. The results would have largely been no different, although Liuzzi wouldn't have got a point (big wow).

It was a ludicrous situation to have half the field decimated after about ten minutes. Just stupid.

However, I realise Coronation Street would have been delayed so they did the right thing I guess.

The other point is letting the cars run through debris, which is just plain daftness.

BootsOntheSide

The cars constantly running over debris was a disgrace, it could have so easily triggered punctures. So many cars made contact on the track that there was always likely to be debris, and Albers' car was dropping loads throughout its time out there.

The ironic thing about the race is that some McLaren team orders might have been useful.

well, as someone who was there and has not seen the tv footage....

there was a clear line for the drivers to take through Turns 1-3 almost immediately, like about 30 secs after the incidents...
All other debris was called but was off line or cleared.....

everyone on our post fully expected a re-start and were stunned when it didn't happen.

That said, it was a fantastic week-end, spent with some old and some new very good friends. The usual US welcome was offered to us both and gratefully received. It's not their fault if drivers can't avoid each other.

i didnt think the race was that bad, actually quite enjoyed it, although the first corner incident was farcical. it shook the order up, we didnt see alonso leading raikkonen leading schumacher leading a trail of cars. Even if there wasnt much overtaking, the racing was still pretty close, albeit between not many cars...

I thought it wasn't bad. Apart from the Ferrari benefit upfront, the rest of it was pretty interesting for most of the race.

You had the Renault/Toyota situation bubbling along nicely and the Coulthard/Liuzzi/Rosberg battle that culminated in an attractive move by the Italian.

It perhaps wasn't the greatest race of all time, but it certainly wasn't the worst - that will probably be in two weeks time at Magny Cours.

Oh, yeah, and the one keeping Michael behind Massa...

For one team it's a sport. For the other it's a business. One team cares about the fans. The other does not. Team orders this early in the season is a slap in the face to the fans who'd like to see a race. Of course I could be wrong.

Well at least ten cars finished better then last years six.
