Willment Cobras

As a young apprentice mechanic, I worked at Willments of Kingston. Stored in a corner of the indoor new car compound were the John Willment Racing Team cars, sadly no longer in use. To a car mad 15 year old this was quite a sight. One of the cars was, I thought at the time, a Cobra Daytona Coupe. I have since read that this was not a Shelby car but one built for Willment.

On the day it was sold, nobody could find out how to open the doors as there were no obvious door handles. Being the smallest person there, i was volunteered to climb in throught the opening back window, around the massive roll cage and into the driving seat, where I stayed until the car was on the trailer.

Does anybody know anything about this car and what has happened to it since?.

I think there is a mention of these is 'Shelby's Wildlife' a book about the Cobra.

Were these not basic Daytona's and then worked on by Willments so they were suitable for the UK series. Most of this was based on Willments experience with other Yank Tanks like the Galaxie's & Falcons.

Do you recall the Lotus Cortina's that they also entered ?

Thanks for that info Simon, must do some more checking up.

I'm not sure about the Lotus cortina, but there was 2 Cortina Gts, a Lotus 30, 2 BRP single seaters,(were these the F1 Brabhams that Willment ran?). There was also at least 1 ordinary Cobra and I can't remember what else !.

I may be wrong, but I have a mental picture of a Brabham in 1.5 F1 guise...
