Autosport.com say ESPN have bought the rights from the BBC.

I went to these races and so I've never seen them on TV.....NO VIDEO PLAYERS THEN!

Good stuff, i was wondering whether they would show some old GP's.

Can we have some old CART races too please ESPN? '93 season would be great! :D

luke

They do on the U.S. ESPN Classic. Each May they show many classic Indy 500s.

But hey atleast we get to see these classic grand prix as BBC, ITV don't show them...

I agree, a fabulous hour of F1. Didnt Brands Hatch look great!

Oh sensational mate.

And Silverstone was fast too.

The cars looked and sounded great. The races may have been just as dull as nowadays often, but you'd never tire of those cars. They are alive.

Nice opportunistic move by Reutemann on Lauda too!

21 Aug 2006, 23:49
Oh great news. They aren't gonna show new ones, just repeats.

Don't they know I've got them taped now! ;)

luke
21 Aug 2006, 23:53
LOL. well I'm sure they will in the future, maybe two weeks or definately a months time. They will have to show 1987, 1991 or most ones actually that were on the BBC. ;)

redshoes
22 Aug 2006, 09:33
Unlikely that they will show anything from the 80s, I was initally a little surprised they are showing any old GPs. Autosport reports that these are 'pre-Concorde Agreement' races, which would explain how the BBC still have the rights to them.

I remember a few years back when the BBC were did a special to celebrate 40 years of Grandstand. Formula 1 was the only sport not to be featured, because despite the BBC coverage being partly responsible for F1's rise in popularity the rights now belong to Bernie and he wanted a substansial sum to let them show any clips.

TimD
22 Aug 2006, 13:55
Yes, all of these are pre-Concorde. They'll be showing the 1973-1980 races according to their schedule, every weekend for the next six weeks, including repeats for those like me who missed this first lot!

luke
22 Aug 2006, 14:45
:(

Well do ITV have an archive? I know they bought the rights after 1996 but surely they may have bought their archives?

In America Speed used to show classic races from the '90s... :(

redshoes
22 Aug 2006, 14:49
ITV only have a licence to broadcast coverage, they do not have the subsequent rights to resell that footage.

Similar to showing a film - they have the rights to broadcast that film a certain number of times but they don't 'own' the film.

Knowlesy
23 Aug 2006, 17:05
Tim....do you have any idea when the next classic GP's are on and which one's they are?

I looked on my Sky Guide and see nothing for this weekend! :(

1975: Sat 30/9 22:00, Sun 1/10 16:00

Blast I failed to see '79 (too much to record on those days and ineptitude).

Then we have a racing through time programme, with the subject being Silverstone on 7/10/06 (2200) and 8/10 (1600). IIRC that has some good footage of XJS at Silverstone in '82. :)
15/16 and 21/22 has four programmes about Jackie Stewart (himself and his team). I think I have seen that before (on beeb?).

It looks like they are having a bit of a Motorsport break after that :(

Knowlesy
17 Sep 2006, 20:28
That must be the lot then, because they have shown all those races.

The Jackie Stewart programmes are "The Flying Scot" documentary, broken up into chunks as far as I can tell.

So I look forward to 'Racing Through Time'!

Well today they showed 1980 on their '70's F1 show :p Not that im complaining, a good race that one plenty of tyre drama's!

I will definetly have to catch the 1973 programme, I missed that one to when it was shown originally! Im praying that they can show some late 80s races, perhaps even some oversea's races, Monaco would be good!

I wish I could get my hands on the archive, I would have a whole channel dedicated to Motorsport and old races if I had my way! :rotate:

Knowlesy
17 Sep 2006, 20:36
There won't be any late 80's races I doubt.

I want to know why there has been no 1976!

No I understand that its highly unlikely, but no harm in dreaming!

I just had a quick search and found the channels website. Now we can all see whats on and when :)

I guess this is where Adam has been getting all his info.

AdamAshmore
17 Sep 2006, 23:12
Yes it is. Although it has been available since the channel was launched. It isn't the best and can take a bit of effort to gleen desired facts from it. Style over content really. However the info is there.

It's odd how few cameras there were in those days. Tom Pryce went off and you didn't see any other shots. You take todays TV for granted.

One thing - the incident that caused the red flag - pretty disturbed when the shot switched to a driver looking in a bad state - who was that.

As the title says, ESPN Classics are showing these old races (except 1976's which was not filmed.)

I thought they were going to be shown in full though. What I've seen so far are quite heavily edited, going from lap 1 to lap 10 in a few minutes for example.

AdamAshmore
29 Dec 2006, 10:06

It would be nice if they did it in full but it said earlier they do a "sports day" so guess maybe it's a time issue. Am grateful to be able to watch even half an hour having not seen it before.

Something to do with the BBC not being happy about Durex sponsorship on Alan Jones's car.

That's a pity. If they're going to do something like that, they should do it in full.

From what i have been told what has been shown is all the BBC kept, (ie... they edited down the original broadcasts to 'highlights', then got rid of it)

Was utterly brilliant actually, just finished qwatching from about 2 o clock this afternoon!!

What intereated me actually was the lack of actualt racing in reality, F1 is no huge way better now than it was then, yes there were more cars and a chaeaper way to get into the sport but the show wasnt that mjuch better!

One great bit was I think the 74 race at Silverstone, Graham Hill had retired his Embassy car and was in the commentary with Raymond Baxter (RIP), and he was talking about it being hard to overtake because of the aerodynamic effect of following someone!! Seems even in the early days of wings the same problems still apply!

But the Stewart programmes was great, Jackie came across just so well, and there were a few really touching bits with him and Ken.

29 Dec 2006, 22:50
I had seen the first two programmes in the Stewart series but it was the first I had seen the later two looking at the set up of Stewart Grand Prix etc, very interesting. Watched the IRL programme too.

Never realised how beautiful John Watson's 77 Brabham Alfa was though! :)

29 Dec 2006, 22:56

I can't tell you I'm afraid Adam as didn't watch it then, can tell you bits and pieces that are in it but none are major enough to jog your memory I don't think.

If it isn't the same series, it's well worth watching.

I recorded the 1975 Intenational trophy at Silverstone and also the 1975 British GP programs and I just got round to watching them this afternoon. I'm glad I bothered to trawl through the listings before going on holiday to find these two prgrams. Real gems! :)

For me, it was a great education in how F1 racing was back them. I love the proportions of the cars i.e. great big slicks on the rear and tiny ones on the front. They looked so purposeful. They way the rear suspension would move as they mounted the kerbs on the exit of Corpse was pretty spectacular. Some of cars were quite beautifully crafted too, the Hesketh caught my eye as did the Ferrari 312T with its little aero details but the car that really did it for me was the Martini Racing Brabham BT44s, there is something about the front end and the air box on those cars.:) Who designed them?

It was great to see drivers I've read about in action, I'm talking about the likes of Tony Brise, Tom Pryce and Mark Donohue and I actually heard what Ronnie Peterson sounded like. Great stuff ESPN.
