Next year there won't be a 3rd car testing on Friday. It's a shame because I beleive that we can truely gauge the progress a team is making by looking at the 3rd car testing on Friday.

At the beginning of the year, Williams with Wurz were very strong. Then came along Kubica and of course Vettel. The results in the races followed soon.

So Friday testing is maybe not just a lot of flashy stuff, and Vettel and Kubica are probably even better than one might think...

It's obviously useful, otherwise they wouldn't use a third car!

And those thrid drivers, although they may have the benefit of a few more revs and unlimited resources and suchlike....they can still show what they are made of, the teambosses have data and F1 bosses know a talent when they see one (usually).

So they are useful. But not really needed I don't think!

Last year Toyota were doing much better when Zonta was testing for them on Friday. And McLaren had Pedro who was helping out as well. This year they seem to have lost some of the edge they had last year.

Yep. And the same could be said of BAR in 2005 compared to 2004, though they designed a rubbish car as well initially, which didn't help!

It does give an edge to a weekend performance as it just gives a lot more options to the team as regards setup and tyre choice.

It is what you make of it.

If you want to construe it that way, fine. The thread won't last long.

Not according to some. :rotate:

I like the idea of the 3rd car as it provides smaller teams with valuable data and a better opportunity to compete with the bigger teams.

It also provides an avenue for young/new drivers to show their stuff. I think it would be good to let all the test drivers have a 10-lap sprint race on the Friday afternoon after both practises are finished.

A ten lap sprint race in what? Sounds expensive to me.;)
