On the verge of greatness?

Judging by todays performance, (watched the race in the afternoon) from the McLaren Mercedes team, and a brilliant debut from Lewis Hamilton keeping the World Champ behind him, untill the last round of stops, I think if McLaren can sort there reliability out there are some very good times ahead.

I think in Lewis Hamilton, Ron Dennis has found a new Ayrton Senna, and a new favorite driver for the McLaren team.

(BTW is it me or is LH Helmet a little like Ayrton Senna's??)

I know there are going to be a few mistakes from Lewis, and i know he wont win the title this year or next year but 2009 has got to be a realistic target for LH.

Imo the McLaren was pretty fast today and i hope for a good season from my favorite team. I think we could be looking at the new versions of the old McLaren red/white steam-rollers, in years to come they will (if they tie him up on a long term contract) have another "yellow helmet" that strikes fear in other drivers mirrors.

Now I can see why, on todays performance why RD decided to nurture LH's talent. I just hope Lewis learns from any mistake he makes this season.

In years to come I think the British press will be saying this, "Lewis Hamilton, Britains Ayrton Senna"

I think that McLaren messed up Lewis' "in lap" to allow Alonso to pass him legitamatly. I am sure they worked out that he would catch Sato and the Toyota at the stage where Lewis would be coming in. This looked like McLaren using team tactics to disguise team orders! It was interesting what Damon Hill said about Lewis "being allowed to" win a race.

Lewis was cheated by his own team to allow the World Champion to come 2nd, thats my thought anyway!

As for Lewis having a Senna-esque helmet, definately! I was thinking that this morning at 4am-ish, With the white Boss sponsorship stickers on the yellow helmet. I hope Lewis is better than Senna, its been a long time since we had a Brit worthy to be a Champion. DC was very strong in McLaren and Williams but has never been championship winning material.

It's only been one race. Wait and see what the rest of the season holds :)

the guys at speed channel said that when he was asked about his helmet being like senna's, he said that he chose a bright color so his father could find him.

Lewis Hamilton is definately the real deal, he has handled everything thrown at him relating to media and sponsor commitments, and more importantly he has handled his car set up and 1st race with amazing maturity. I dont think he or anyone else for that matter will every be quite as special as Ayrton, but this young guy is definately a future multi world champion. And I am sure he has already ben sighed by Ron Dennis for a number of years. In my opinion he made the Australian GP on of the best to watch for quite some time.

Just a thought, but how will we tell LH and Bruno Senna apart when they both are in F1. (helmet wise) I know you can see the cars they will be driving, but at speed how could you tell the which yellow helmet is whos!!

I still think Bruno will have a drive at STR in 2008, by that time LH wil have one pole and one race victory!!

Like I said about Hekki - give the guy a break. It's only one race.

He doesn't need the adoring public heaping more pressure onto him to perform than he probably is putting himself under...

Nicko, I would actually prefeered LH to have had a poor race, because the pressure on his shoulders now will be HUGE!

On the verge of not keeping his feet on the ground. All effort at McLaren will now be to shield him from this (understandable) excitement and get him back down to ordinary business.

Also on the verge of, but not yet experienced:
- One of those race weekends where nothing goes right and he has to battle for every inch or progress (maybe from an engine penalty - bound to get one of those, probably soon).
- A genuine super-hard tussle with a hard racer - LH vs Kimi is going to happen very soon.
- The full array of mind-games and team politics which will inevitably ensue, and probably already has.
- Also on the verge of first outings at defining circuits - First Monaco, first Spa…

Monaco will be great for Lewis Glen. He mastered it quite consummately in lower formulas. He dominated the GP2 event and also F3 there.
