Race to Win

I expect that those with street circuit experience to have an advantage
Therefore Asmer if he appears, Jelley, Engel, Kennard, Valerio look favorites.
However it depends how they all adapt to a new track, there has been limited time for testing and as in Pau last year there are too many cars to have a safe qualifying. I expect there to be many accidents as too many have not been to a street track before.
Why dont the organisers realise the dangers before they happen?

from what i can gather, the streets are considerably wider than pau, so i'd say there's not going to be as much of a problem as there was at pau. they can manage macau, i'm sure they can cope with bucharest!

May as well post this again as there are two threads running...For anyone who wants to follow the action, timing should be here: http://www.mstworld.com/

It's another version of MST. That's the opening page, so you'll have to follow the FIA GT route to Bucharest and take it from there.bella's right. The circuit doesn't look remotely as tight as Pau and it has to be wide enough to allow the FIA GTs to have a 2 hour race.

well there's not really any overtaking in those races except in the pitlane, so it's probably not so important ;)

I agree the streets are wider, but there is usually only one line!
Hopefully the marshalling will be up to scratch as in Macau, and that the drivers take notice.
It will be great there in good weather if it all comes together.

Have to say that Bucharest may well be a bit of a lottery, but I think we'll probably see more of a level playing field as a result of the fact that no-one's raced here before. I reckon this'll probably play into the hands of the more 'cerebral' drivers over the ones with pure natural speed.

So I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that Stephen Jelley could get his maiden victory this weekend.

hopefully, we won't have the carnage here like at the f3 meeting at pau last year but if there is, we better ship some marshals out. No offence Romania

I think because of the unknown track this is a great leveling ground for some of the alsorans out there this weekend, but also the guys that have experience of street curcuits like Pau may have a slight advantage. Lets wait and see what the times are like once on the track before making any predictions of whos going to win.

Asmer was top dog all day
Sebastian Hohenthal hit the wall in t1 i think
Guerrieri had trouble with the 2nd chicane . spinning and causing a red but also hitting the wall with his front wing

it rained very lightly during the running.. but it's raining heavily now in Bucharest .. and it was very very cold .. especially in the morning

Jelley on pole for second race - Asmer in 10th. Drying track made the last 5 minutes a bit of a lottery as the times tumbled.

Max Chilton 13th, pretty damn good even if it was a lottery. I just hope Jelley gets his first overall race win this weekend! Perez is going well and getting into the top 10 overall, one to watch I think.

Men & Motors GT coverage (on now) reports that the race was carnage. Any news on what happened and the state of drivers??

Dani Filth
19 May 2007, 17:07
drivers were ok .. and not that much of a carnage .. the SC stayed too much on track . only about 6-7 green laps out of 16 ..
chinese driver .. forgot his name .. lost it in the 3rd chicane .. and collected another 2 ..

Presume Cheng from Nat class? Shame SC was out for so long. Believe he's now second in Nat class championship. See Asmer won, and there were three SC periods all in all.

Carnage isn't the adjective I would use but there weren't many racing laps (listen to Marko Asmer in the post race press conference on the British F3 website here (http://www.britishf3international.com/news.php?action=showArticle&params%5Bid%5D=260)).
Cheng speared across the track and collected Leo Mansell and then Francessco Castellacci ran into the back of Leo. Both Mansell's are out of the race today, Greg's tub was damaged in the shunt with Seb Hohenthal and Leo OK but shaken after the accident and will sit it out on medical advice - not a good day for Fortec. There will be 28 starters for Round 6.
Next race at 10:45 (8:45 UK time).

yeah .. Marko was pushing Gonzalez .. was trying a pass on the outside coming down .. but Gonzalez "pushed" Marko wide .. and Martin passed both on the inside .. great move ..

No, the F3 rules don't allow this to happen. They had to repair Greg's chassis to enable him to race but the tub was damaged. It was frustrating for the team and the drivers but rules are rules!

Three winners so far this season
Round 1 - Engel
Rounds 2, 3, 4, 5 - Asmer
Round 6 - Bird

The F3 race was dryish (some puddles on the circuit), though there were a few spots of rain towards the end of the race. As Suze says, it poured it down for the GT3 race later so we were pretty lucky.

A few random thoughts and facts about the weekend:

As street circuits go, Bucharest was great. There are a few tweaks that need to be done if a return visit is planned, but this could easily become one of the best street circuit events on the calendar.

Sam Bird (http://www.britishf3international.com/gallery.php?action=showImage&params%5Bid%5D=777) was on top form all weekend and thoroughly deserved his win in race 2. You would never have known it was his first street race, because he went about it in exactly the right way. After a slight blip at Donington, Carlin were also right back on their game.

Marko Asmer could have dominated the weekend but for a slow Q2. His recovery drive was an example of how to keep a cool head under pressure. Rodolfo Gonzalez drove like an idiot and fully deserved to be penalized.

It was a shame about the weather. Thursday was blisteringly hot, but after that we might as well have been back home in England. It felt as though F3 was unlucky with the weather, because several times the cars took to the track just after a slight shower, but compared to the consistent rain on Sunday afternoon, we were actually quite lucky.

For the record, Asmer's time of 1m 11.681s in Q1 was the quickest of the weekend and his fastest lap of 1m 13.645s in race 1 is the new outright circuit lap record.

The Safety Car situations were very badly handled in my opinion. Both races were started behind the Safety Car for different reasons, so ignore those, but the first intervention in race 1 and the only intervention in race 2 were crazy because the Safety Car came out in the middle of the pack and it took ages before the driver started waving slower cars by and then he had to pick up the leader and wait while everyone else caught back up behind him. That's why the interventions were so long. The only time they got it right was the second time in race 1.

The Romanian people were very friendly, polite and helpful, and didn't seem to resent the fact the fact that their city had been severely disrupted by this big new motorsport event. The grid girls (http://www.britishf3international.com/gallery.php?action=showImage&params%5Bid%5D=763) were definitely a cut above what we are used to!

The traffic in Bucharest is horrific, but there are some wonderful buildings to look at whilst stuck in it! The very pleasant F3 paddock was just off what looks like a roundabout on the circuit map, but is in fact entirely a man-made affair.

The Romanians did a phenomenal amount of work in the 36 hours between when we arrived and the official start of track action. Most of the Marshals came in from Germany, with a few from Austria and Belgium. They were pretty good, but didn't seem to know how to write reports. The situation was saved by the excellent TV coverage.

The National Class is shaping up into a nice three way battle between (in current order order) Frankie Cheng, Mike Meadows and Sergio Garcia.

I agree with a lot of your comments, however it was a shame about the weather, as that stopped a lot of locals coming to watch. The cost of entry was an obvious barrier for the locals who judging from those trying to watch either over or through the sheeting around or precariously perched on surrounding buildings.
The circuit was very good for the first time, and the marshalling ok.
Better notice of flags by drivers would have saved some cars, and the recovery after accidents was poor. The flat bed trucks caused some extra repair bills. Cranes like Macau would have been the best answer.
The first race was spoilt by the safety car. The crowd were never given the excitement of a race start which was a shame, but there are many good points to suggest it is worth going again.
Race two will make good TV as will the GT3 and FIAGT races.
Lets just hope that the damage bills and injure drivers are all ok.

if the second race would've been completely dry .. we would've probably seen him drive to the front . .he had a big advantage in those conditions from what I could see

The traffic sucks anyway, we didn't even notice the difference ;).
