At the two Bathurst 24hr races, 'flagging' was done at night by use of table tennis style paddles, with reflective yellow, blue etc on them. Simply used the headlights of the oncoming cars, and was bright enough that you could see where you were reflecting to, and as such could make sure it was in the drivers eyes.
