While Wolff mentions that it works in NASCAR, where several of the large teams provide chassis and engines for smaller teams, the huge difference is that in NASCAR the customer teams are able to beat the teams providing the hardware. I can't see that ever happening in Formula 1, should it introduce customer cars, as the major teams simply would not provide fully competitive cars - they'd always be a tad inferior.

I'd be happy to be wrong, of course, but I just can't see it happening seeing how egoistic and protective the big teams are even today.
