Yes, you'd want to make sure that the block was FIRMLY attached, otherwise you could be wearing it. I think there is a bit of bar work (cross bracing et al) between the cockpit and the engine compartment.
Side impacts hurt no matter what you're in (unless its the navigator's side HEHEHE).
