IIRC, when there was refuelling, fuel tanks held only enough fuel to last for maybe a bit more than one third race distance. Of course, this wasn't actually written into the regulations, but the practicalities of the situation ensured that you had to stop at least twice during a race for fuel, and usually for tyres as well, even if they weren't actually worn.
Was the 'sprint-stop-sprint-stop-sprint' era, any worse or better than this proposal?
