The smaller engine will probably compensate for the extra weight of the hybrid system.

I wonder. If a hybrid system is used that powers the front wheels, it is possible to make a permanent 4WD by fitting a huge alternator. In that case the combustion engine can power the electric motor(s) of the front axle even is the KERS battery is empty...
