Exclusive – Porsche Push For Radically Different LMP1
We’re hearing from a very good source that Porsche intend to break the sportscar mould with their planned 2014 Le Mans contender, adhering to the ‘two seater’ rule but mounting them in line astern.
Known internally as the “kayak” concept the Stuttgart based auto maker is now actively lobbying for the concept to be given the green light by ACO rulemakers.
DSC’s source revealed too that the Deltawing concept had given the car’s designers food for thought but not in the way that Ben Bowlby intended – One early Porsche concept sees the general layout of the Deltawing reversed with a wider front section and a narrow rear, the front section would enable the car to have sufficient front aero to provide major useful downforce whilst the narrow rear, with engine, hybrid systems and gearbox mounted in line astern, benefits from radically reduced drag.
The current development concept is dubbed Fahrradgemachtfürzwei by Porsche’s motorsport Skunk Works though we can expect a more marketable moniker by the time the new car sees the light of day in late 2013.
